Purdue, after a fingernail-biting 64-63 win over Michigan State as 3.5-point favorites in its last contest, will have an easier time Thursday against the last- place Golden Gophers.

Zach Edey and the Boilermakers beat Minnesota 89-70 on Dec. 4 and pushed as 19-point favorites with the Over 131.5 total cashing.

While Purdue is known for its defense, ranking 21stin the nation allowing only 61.2 points, the Minnesota offense is ranked 342nd in the country at only 64.4 PPG.

Moneyline

Purdue -950 would be the only wager to make. But with the odds so high, I am not willing to risk almost 10 times my money for a straight bet on this game.

Against the spread

PURDUE -13.5 (-105) is the wager to make in this game.

Purdue’s elite defense will hold down a Minnesota team that is 255th in FG percentage at 43.1 and 245th in 3-point percentage at 32.9.

Edey (21.9 PPG) and the Purdue offense will move up and down the floor at The Barn. This game will be double-digits at the half and Purdue will not look back from there.

Over/Under

UNDER 133.5 (-110) is the way I am playing here.

While Purdue can score, the Boilermakers defense will not allow the overmatched Golden Gophers to keep pace.

Minnesota will be lucky to get out of the 50s against Purdue and the Boilermakers will coast to the end by milking the clock and extending the length of its trips down the floor.

Minnesota comes into this game after dismantling Michigan State 34-7. That was a good sign as the Gophers schedule up to that point had been a mish mash of cupcakes which were dispatched with ease. Seeing Minnesota do this against a Big Ten team satisfied the naysayers for another week.

Purdue comes in after a struggle with Florida Atlantic, just barely prevailing 28-26. QB Aidan O’Connell and WR Charlie Jones, a transfer from Iowa, have hooked up 41 times for 533 yards and 7 TDs.

Minnesota has outscored its opponents 183-24 so far this season. They are the favorites right now to win the Big Ten West. This game will go a long way to determine if either of these 2 teams are on the right path.

We did not know what to expect from Minnesota after playing 3 easy home games to start the season. After holding New Mexico State, Western Illinois, and Colorado to a combined 17 points, we still needed to see more. We saw it as Minnesota held Michigan State to 7 points on the road last Saturday.

The Gophers’ offense is good. The defense is great. Much of this is due to their ability to not only pass with Tanner Morgan, but also run with Mohamed Ibrahim. They can control the clock and keep opposing teams off the field. Against the Spartans, Minnesota had the ball for 42 minutes to Michigan State’s18.

Doing this against Purdue, while also knowing that Purdue is completely one-dimensional on offense, means the Golden Gophers are set to dominate another game early in the season. Minnesota -12.5 (-110) is my favorite play of this game.

Over/Under

I like the UNDER 52.5 (-115) in this game.

As mentioned, Minnesota has a ball control offense and a dominant defense because of it. They have only allowed 24 points all season.

While Purdue can score, they are coming off a mediocre performance against Florida Atlantic. With Minnesota knowing Purdue cannot run, they will focus and shut down the pass game of Aidan O’Connell. This will lead to Purdue struggling and Minnesota pulling away. I expect the Under 52.5 (-113) to be the winner here.

Purdue at Minnesota: Three things to know

Purdue is 3-2 straight up and ATS in its last five games, alternating wins and losses with its last game being a 75-70 victory as an 8-point home favorite over Northwestern Saturday.
All of Minnesota’s losses this season have come in conference play and six of them were road games. The Golden Gophers snapped a three-game losing skid Monday by waxing Nebraska 79-61 at home. Prior to the losing streak, Minnesota lit up Michigan 75-57 at home Jan. 16.
The Golden Gophers led at halftime of their first meeting with the Boilermakers this season before getting drubbed 51-27 in the second half of an 81-62 Purdue home win. The Boilermakers have won two in a row over the Golden Gophers but they’re just 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.

TAKE PURDUE (+145) to “upset” Minnesota on the road. Granted, the Golden Gophers play much better at home than on the road but I like how the Boilermakers match up with them. First, Purdue has the 33rd best rebounding percentage in the nation and Minnesota is 274th.

Second, the Golden Gophers don’t attack in the way needed to exploit the Boilermakers’ weakness of rim protection. Minnesota attempts the 325th-highest rate of shots at the rim while Purdue is 321st in opponent’s field-goal percentage at the rim, according to Hoop-Math.com.

Against the spread (ATS)

PURDUE +3.5 (-110) is the stronger play and should be either bet heavier than or instead of the money line.

Some might excuse Minnesota’s first loss to Purdue as a game that got away from the Golden Gophers in the second half, but the Boilermakers didn’t have their second-leading scorer and best 3-point shooter in SG Sasha Stefanovic in that game.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS with a lean on Over 138.5 (-110) because Minnesota shoots better at home and Purdue is going to allow the Gophers to shoot threes. Purdue’s opponents shoot the eighth-highest rate of 3-pointers and while Minnesota is 307th in effective field-goal shooting, it’ll be more comfortable on its home floor.

Purdue at Minnesota: Three things to know

Minnesota won last year’s meeting 38-31 in a late September game at West Lafayette, Ind. Trailing 28-17 entering the final quarter, Purdue managed to score two touchdowns in the final 6 minutes to make it close. The Boilermakers were a minus-2 in turnover margin in what was a relatively even-yardage game.
The Gophers have won five straight series games at home vs. the Boilermakers. Minnesota is 3-2 ATS over those five contests, but the two non-covers were in games that had the Gophers tabbed as double-digit favorites (2014, ’16).
Junior RB Mohamed Ibrahim has helped the Golden Gophers pile up over 35 minutes of possession time per game. Ibrahim is a workhorse back who has averaged 32.5 carries per game and 5.5 yards per attempt. His 715 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs have been a key part of a Minnesota offense which ranks fourth in the nation in time of possession (35:36).

The Gophers are a slight lean, but not enough to warrant a play on implied odds of 51.46%. It’d require a tag of +140-or-better to make for some value here. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven games in this series. The Golden Gophers lost to Iowa last week; they are 6-1 ATS over their last seven games following a straight-up loss.

The Minnesota offense has been really bad (7.9 yards per play — 126th FBS) in its four games, but that YPP figure is tinged with a horrendous start over the team’s first two games and a better effort over the last two. The UM defensive struggles also overshadow Purdue’s offensive woes: The Boilermakers’ 369 yards per game rank 86th in the nation.

Minnesota was undone by horrible field position in last week’s contest. Figure on UM having enough pass defense and enough of a ground game to cover here. Back the GOPHERS +1 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Gophers will want to clock a lead or anything close. A 20-something-20-something score is more likely than either side getting 35. Back the UNDER 60.5 (-106).
