Notre Dame Week 3 highlight: Fighting Irish continue to pour it on to start second half

Will one easy touchdown toss from the backup start a QB controversy?

Notre Dame took starting quarterback Riley Leonard out to rest and avoid potential injury as the second half started against the Purdue Boilermakers with the Fighting Irish leading comfortably, 42-0.

Two plays later, backup Steve Angeli may have inadvertently started a quarterback controversy when he hid a wide-open Cooper Flanagan for a 28-yard touchdown. The tight end was so open because Purdue was too aggressive on defense.

This means Angeli has one passing touchdown on the season, while Leonard, who struggled against Texas A&M and Northern Illinois, has none. Leonard did run for three touchdowns in the first half, and while his passing numbers were pedestrian, he did look more comfortable throwing the football.

One easy touchdown is unlikely to cause a quarterback change, but some frustrated fans will likely advocate for it anyway. At least until Leonard looks as consistently comfortable passing as he does running.

Notre Dame Week 3 highlight: Jadarian Price caps off huge first half

Jadarian Price wanted in on the fun.

With a 35-0 lead against the Purdue Boilermakers after a Boubacar Traore pick-six, and with just 37 seconds remaining in the first half, it looked like Notre Dame would simply be conservative with the football.

The Fighting Irish were, choosing to give the ball to running back Jadarian Price for a carry. But Price wasn’t willing to settle. He evaded a tackler in the backfield, turned the corner, made a cut and was gone. Price took it 70 yards to the house to give the Irish a 42-0 lead over Purdue, following the Mitch Jeter extra point.

The huge halftime lead has been built entirely on running touchdowns, plus the pick-six.

Notre Dame Week 3 highlight: Pick-six builds first-half lead

The defense is getting in on the act against Purdue.

Notre Dame defensive lineman Boubacar Traore was the beneficiary of a baffling decision by Purdue Boilermakers quarterback Hudson Card.

Card tried a desperation flip and Traore easily picked it off and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown with 1:32 left in the first half.

Mitch Jeter hit the extra point as the Fighting Irish are pouring it on against their in-state rivals in the first half. Notre Dame’s offense, especially the ground game, has been effective, and the defense has stifled the Boilermakers all day long.

Card has been struggling with pressure from the Irish, and even potentially serious injuries to three starters haven’t dampened Irish spirits so far.

Notre Dame Week 3 highlight: Riley Leonard runs it in yet again

And another one for Notre Dame’s running threat at quarterback.

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard came to the Fighting Irish as a dual-threat transfer from Duke. He struggled to pass the ball in the first two weeks and while he’s passed it better in week 3 against the Purdue Boilermakers, he’s doing all the scoring damage with his legs.

He has run for three of the Irish’s four touchdowns in the first half. This one was a 13-yard run that ended a 10-play, 77-yard drive that took 4:54 off the clock. There was 2:10 left in the first half, and Mitch Jeter nailed another extra point to make it 28-0.

Notre Dame looks different, at least through one half, than the team that faceplanted against Northern Illinois just a week ago.

Notre Dame Week 3 highlight: Riley Leonard does it again

Riley Leonard is using his legs effectively against Purdue.

We’re approaching halftime in the third game of the season, and Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard still doesn’t have a touchdown pass through the air.

He may not need one if he keeps running the ball into the end zone.

He ran for his second touchdown of the game on a 34-yard keeper on second and 10 with 8:24 to play in the second quarter. That capped off a 7-play, 68-yard drive that took 3:16 off the clock.

It appeared, briefly, that Leonard may have stepped out of bounds after getting the first down, but replay review upheld the call on the field. Watching on the broadcast, it appears the review made the correct call.

Notre Dame Week 3 Highlight: Riley Leonard run adds to strong start

Notre Dame has another touchdown as the offense appears to be getting untracked.

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard still doesn’t have a touchdown pass, but he has another rushing touchdown. This one has given the Fighting Irish a 14-0 lead over Purdue with 1:53 remaining in the first quarter.

The 3-yard run was the capper for an 11-play, 82-yard drive that took 5:43 off the clock. Notre Dame mixed plays well and moved the ball effectively.

Another Mitch Jeter extra-point attempt made the score 14-0.

Notre Dame has a lot to answer for on offense after struggling in a gritty win over Texas A&M and during the failure against Northern Illinois. So far, the offense has looked much better, though fans still await the first Notre Dame touchdown pass from Leonard.

Notre Dame Week 3 highlight: Jeremiyah Love gets it going

There were some sighs of relief after this run.

If there were fears about a post-NIU hangover, Notre Dame’s first drive against Purdue may help put them to bed.

Yes, it’s true that the Fighting Irish were also good on their first drive against the Huskies, but context matters — the Irish weren’t going into that game after one of the worst losses in program history. With expectations of a bounce-back game and the pressure of staying alive in the playoff hunt at play, the Irish used two easy short passes from quarterback Riley Leonard to Jayden Harrison and Beaux Collins to get things rolling.

Leonard then ran for 13 yards and the first down. Jeremiyah Love followed an unremarkable 3-yard run with a 48-yard scamper to the end zone to cap off the 5-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. A Mitch Jeter extra-point kick has given the Irish a 7-0 lead in a key game against their in-state rival.

Here’s what the experts are saying about Notre Dame at Purdue

Here’s what the experts say as Notre Dame looks to win a bounce-back game.

Last week, the experts (and your author) all expected Notre Dame to cruise over Northern Illinois. Well, we all have some egg on our faces after the 16-14 upset by the Huskies.

So what are the experts saying about the Fighting Irish as they prepare to play Purdue in a game that could determine their College Football Playoff fate?

CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah has the Irish winning a close game in which Purdue will cover the spread. Why? In part because Boilermakers quarterback Hudson Card could play well if the Irish can’t get pressure, and in part because the Irish might be rattled by the loss to NIU.

“Many successful coaching tenures at Purdue were highlighted with historic wins over Notre Dame, and this certainly appears to be a fallible version. If the Boilermakers can protect quarterback Hudson Card, he represents one of the best quarterbacks the Fighting Irish will defend this season. Notre Dame will pull away for a victory, but Purdue will give the Irish their best shot,” he writes.

How to buy Purdue vs. Notre Dame Week 3 college football tickets

Want to watch the Purdue Boilermakers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish in person on Saturday, Sept. 14? Tickets still remain for as little as $125.

The Purdue Boilermakers get set to host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday for Week 3 of this fall’s college football action, and if you are looking to catch the action in person, we have the ticket information you are seeking.

The Boilermakers opened up the season with a shutout of the Indiana State Sycamores before taking a bye last weekend. Currently unranked and voteless in the US LBM Coaches Poll, Purdue certainly wants to make a statement on its home turf.

The Fighting Irish are 1-1 early on in the 2024 campaign thanks to a win to open things up against the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station. However, Notre Dame was shocked last weekend at home by the upstart Northern Illinois Huskies on a last-minute field goal.

Purdue will host Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
