Packers activating LT David Bakhtiari off of PUP list

The Packers are returning LT David Bakhtiari from the PUP list on Sunday. He’ll do individual drills.

The training camp of All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari will officially begin on Sunday. Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Bakhtiari is coming off the physically unable to participate (PUP) list and will do individual drills on Sunday.

“Dave’s coming off PUP today. He’ll be out there at practice today,” LaFlrue said. “He is only going to do individual…it’s just the next step. But we are excited to get him out there on the grass, and we’ll take it one day at a time.”

Bakhtiari, who originally injured his knee before Week 17 of the 2020 season, has been on the PUP list since the start of training camp. He played in just one game during the 2021 season and has needed three total surgeries since suffering the original injury, including one right before the start of the offseason workout program this spring.

LaFleur said the Packers want to see how Bakhtiari’s knee responds and wouldn’t put a timeline on his full return to the field. It’s still unclear if he has a chance to play Week 1, but now the Packers are committing to having Bakhtiari on the first 53-man roster.

“There’s no thought as of Week 1 is concerned right now,” LaFleur said. “When he’s ready, he’s ready.”

LaFleur also said it’s reasonable to expect Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins, who is also coming off a major injury, to have some rust that will need to get knocked off once they return.

Bakhtiari played in the season finale last year in Detroit but was unavailable for the postseason. Prior to the injury, Bakhtiari was a five-time All-Pro at offensive tackle.

TE Darren Waller joins slew of Raiders starters to return to practice

Raiders had a bunch of starters return to practice including all players on PUP list.

It’s quite a day for the Raiders at training camp. The biggest name to return to practice is tight end Darren Waller, who had been out for nearly three weeks. But he was joined by a whole host of projected starters according to media on hand at practice.

For a full month of camp. there have been at least four players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list — Trayvon Mullen, Bilal Nichols, Johnathan Hankins, and Dillon Stoner.

All four of them took the field today.

Just two days ago, head coach Josh McDaniels said he wasn’t ready to give a timeline on when the likes of Nichols and Hankins would be back, saying they would return when he was confident they could do so without risk of a setback. So…surprise!

Also returning after missing some time was starting cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. Along with Mullen’s return, he gives the Raiders both their projected outside starters.

Lastly, Divine Deablo is back at practice after missing some time. Deablo started five games last season and is competing with newcomer Jayon Brown at outside linebacker, with situations where both could be on the field together.

For Waller’s part, the issue was said to be a hamstring. It has been a long camp and it’s worth noting that Waller spent a good portion of last year’s camp nursing an injury. It’s camp which is the time to be cautious about such things.

Raiders CB Trayvon Mullen returns to practice, coming off PUP list

Trayvon Mullen comes off PUP list to take training camp field.

For the first time this training camp Trayvon Mullen took the field, according to multiple media accounts. The projected starting cornerback started camp on the Physically Unable to perform list, where he remained for the past month.

The former second round pick cornerback has been the full time starter at cornerback for the better part of three seasons.

Injuries have been an issue of late for him, causing him to miss all but five games last season, and twice being placed on injured reserve.

Once he’s back full, he’s expected to push for a starting outside cornerback spot across from newly acquired Rock Ya-Sin.

In Mullen’s absence, the Raiders have tried nickel cornerback Nate Hobbs on the outside to test his versatility. Hobbs has stepped up to the challenge and has at times played very well on the outside, including picking off two passes this camp.

It might be too soon to expect Mullen to play against the Dolphins in Miami on Saturday, but having him on the field for the scrimmages against the Patriots and possibly the final preseason game should prepare him for the start of the season.

Raiders offer no timeline for return of Johnathan Hankins, Bilal Nichols from PUP

Johnathan Hankins and Bilal Nichols have been on PUP all camp and still no word on when they might return.

There was a near complete overhaul of the interior defensive line by the Raiders this offseason. Only Johnathan Hankins returned among the main DT rotation. All others either were not re-signed or signed elsewhere in free agency.

Coming over from Chicago was Bilal Nichols who was expected to join Hankins as a starter.

Neither of them has seen the field in training camp.

On the first day of camp, both Hankins and Nichols were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. And that’s where they’ve been for nearly a month.

In Josh McDaniels’s Monday morning press conference following the Raiders’ second preseason game, he was asked about the potential return of Hankins and Nichols and had no answers.

“We’ll kind of gauge that as we go here in the next so many days. I don’t want to put a timeframe on that. As soon as they’re ready, we’ll be ready to go. Sometimes you feel good one day and not as good the next. So, once we feel confident we’re headed in the right direction and we’re not going to take a misstep then we’ll make the right decision at that time.”

Obviously, there’s a lot of non-answering happening here. But he does suggest they have yet to feel like either Hankins or Nichols is “headed in the right direction” in terms of feeling confident they won’t suffer a setback.

For the preseason game on Sunday, it was Kyle Peko and Andrew Billings who got the start, so you figure they lead the way either to replace Hankins or Nichols in the regular season or for spots in the rotation.

Others vying for playing time include Vernon Butler, Kendal Vickers, Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, and drafted rookies Matthew Butler and Neil Farrell Jr.

Broncos injuries: Randy Gregory, Billy Turner activated off PUP list

Mostly good news on the injury front for the Broncos this week.

Reinforcements are on the way.

The Denver Broncos activated outside linebacker Randy Gregory (shoulder) and offensive lineman Billy Turner (knee) off the physically unable to perform list on Monday, the team announced.

That means the two players are now eligible to practice again, but it doesn’t necessarily mean both players will jump into starting spots right away.

The Broncos are hopeful that both players will be ready to face the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football in Week 1, but the team won’t rush them in their respective recoveries. It remains to be seen if either player will get any snaps in the team’s final two preseason games.

Elsewhere on the injury front, coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed Monday that inside linebacker Jonas Griffith (elbow) will miss 4-6 weeks. Denver signed veteran Joe Schobert to help replace Griffith in the meantime.

Hackett also announced that guard Netane Muti had a knee procedure. The offensive lineman will be week-to-week going forward.

Additionally, Hackett said running back Melvin Gordon (foot) and running back Ronald Darby (chest) will be day-to-day this week.

The Broncos will face the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 2 of preseason on Saturday.

Predicting the 1st roster cutdown for the Lions

All NFL teams have to cut to 85 players by Tuesday afternoon, but the Lions might not have to make any moves at all

All NFL teams have to cut down from 90 players to a maximum of 85 before Tuesday, August 16th at 4 p.m. ET. For the Detroit Lions, the impending cutdown could be anticlimactic.

The Lions currently have five players who are on either the physically unable to perform (PUP) or non-football injury (NFI) lists. Those players count against the 90-man roster even though they’re not actively cleared to practice or play.

The quintet:

  • WR Jameson Williams (NFI)
  • FB Jason Cabinda (PUP)
  • CB Jerry Jacobs (PUP)
  • DE Romeo Okwara (PUP)
  • DL Josh Paschal (PUP)

The Lions don’t have to make any decision on those five players until August 23rd. That’s the day when rosters must be trimmed down to 80 from 85, and it’s also the point where something needs to happen to players on the PUP or NFI.

From the league’s handbook for 2022:

Simultaneously with the roster reduction to 80 players, clubs that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness may select one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; terminate or request waivers with the designation of Failed Physical or Non- Football Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; request waivers; terminate contract; trade contract; or continue to count the player on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness List.

In short, the Lions won’t have to cut anyone by Tuesday afternoon if they don’t want to. Not releasing anyone would be a good sign that none of the five listed players are going to play in the second preseason game in Indianapolis.

However, the Lions do have some walking wounded players who are not on the lists. If players like DT Levi Onwuzurike, WR Quintez Cephus, S Ifeatu Melifonwu and WR Josh Johnson — all missed every practice last week as well as the Falcons game — aren’t apt to be ready for the week in Indianapolis, the Lions could choose to make a move for depth purposes. Johnson, an undrafted rookie from Tulsa, is the only player here who is in any immediate roster jeopardy.

Should the Lions opt to trim someone off the active roster, my top five candidates in order: TE Nolan Givan, OL Logan Stenberg, OT Obinna Eze, TE Derrick Deese Jr. and Johnson. I don’t see head coach Dan Campbell ending the kicking competition just yet.

Marcus Davenport returns to practice at Saints training camp

Marcus Davenport returns to practice at Saints training camp after starting out on the PUP list:

Good news: the New Orleans Saints activated Marcus Davenport from their physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Tuesday, clearing the way for the big defensive end to participate in training camp practices. And it comes at a great time with their preseason exhibition series about to kick off on Saturday with the Houston Texans.

That’s not to say Davenport will get on the field in Houston. He’s got more hurdles to overcome as his conditioning improves, and it’s unclear if the team will give him the greenlight so soon. They’ve been cautious with other injuries and may choose to do the same here, instead giving Davenport another week of practice before putting him up against live opponents. Next week’s join practice sessions with the Green Bay Packers should be a great opportunity to gauge his progress.

Davenport has struggled with injuries throughout his pro career, totaling appearances of 13, 13, 11, and 11 games in each of his first four seasons. He suffered a season-ending foot injury in his rookie year and missed time with elbow and shoulder issues. It’s been a frustrating summer for him, too. Davenport underwent a couple of shoulder surgeries and had to amputate most of his left pinky finger during the offseason, stemming from an old college injury, and learned to live without it. That’s changed his workout routine and how he uses his hand in day-to-day life.

But those challenges are behind him now, and he’s focusing on catching up to his teammates on the practice field. A lot’s on the line for him. Davenport is playing out the final year of his rookie contract. If he meets expectations and reaches the heights we’ve seen before, he’ll be positioned well to cash in with a big contract next March. The question is whether the Saints will pay it or someone else. But that doesn’t happen if Davenport continues to miss time with injuries. We know how productive he can be when he’s on the field. It’s up to him to stay out there.

Bucs activate CB Don Gardner from Physically Unable to Perform list

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have activated rookie cornerback Don Gardner from the Physically Unable to Perform list

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers activated rookie cornerback Don Gardner from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, the team announced Sunday.

Gardner, an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State, can now rejoin the Bucs in practice as they continue through training camp.

The last of Tampa Bay’s players to come off the PUP list, Gardner was already counted against the team’s 90-man roster, so the Bucs won’t need to make a corresponding move to activate him.

Texans place 3 players on PUP list to start training camp

The Houston Texans placed three players on the physically unable to perform list a day before the first training camp practice.

The Houston Texans have added players to the physically unable to perform list to start training camp.

The Texans have their first practice July 28 at Houston Methodist Training Center.

The three players on the PUP list are defensive end Jordan Jenkins, defensive back Tristin McCollum, and fifth-round tight end Teagan Quitoriano.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans placed Jenkins on the PUP list due to an ankle injury. The former New York Jets 2016 third-round pick is not expected to stay on the PUP list very long.
