Huskers DL Princewill Umamielen improving certain aspect of game

Princewill Umamielen is determined to get better in every aspect of his game.

Nebraska football defensive lineman Princewill Umamielen made an impact in his freshman season last year. He played in 11 games and started one, tallying 22 tackles and a sack. Now, he is looking to take on a bigger role, and the program is challenging him to get even better.

Umamielen is also making strides in the weight room as well. He was 230 pounds last year and is now 245 pounds, per a report from Husker247’s Michael Bruntz. This will allow him to add another element to his game. He had already established himself as a reliable pass-rusher. Now, he is more prepared to stop the run in a conference that features run-happy teams like Oregon and  Ohio State.

Umamielen spoke to Bruntz about what the added work in the weight room would do to his game.

“I would just say in the run, I’m able to play the run much better. Last year, me being how small I was it was very difficult.”

Umamielen was a dynamic playmaker last season for the Nebraska football defense. The former four-star recruit had short flashes of what he could do throughout the course of the year. Now, it’s going to be about him putting it all together. It sounds like he is taking steps in the right direction to do so.

Pair of Huskers named Freshman All-Americans

A pair of Cornhuskers have earned Freshman All-American honors.

Nebraska saw a pair of freshmen named Freshman All-Americans for their performances this season.

Linebacker Princewill Umanmielen and defensive end Cameron Lendhardt both received honors. Umanmielen was named a second-team freshman All-American by the Athletic, while Lendhart was an honorable mention according to the College Football Network.

Umanmielen was a four-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, ranked by all four major recruiting services as a top-300 prospect nationally. The defensive lineman turned linebacker recorded 22 tackles including 4.5 tackles for a loss and one sack.

Lenhardt was ranked as a four-star prospect by both ESPN and Rivals, the former ranking him as the No. 143 player in the nation. After a recruitment that saw him commit, decommit, and commit again to the Huskers, Lenhardt ultimately signed with the program last January. This season, he recorded 16 tackles, including five tackles for a loss and three sacks.

Top five true freshman edge rushers in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman edge rushers in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year because recruiting is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle. We already dived into the quarterbacksrunning backswide receiverstight ends, offensive tackles and interior offensive linemen. Now, we dive into the top edge rushers.
