LSU softball puts 5 on First-Year Academic Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Five student-athletes from the LSU Softball team has been named to the 2022-23 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll announced Friday by the Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey.

Representing LSU softball on the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll is Maci Bergeron, Sydney Berzon, Alea Johnson, Abigail Savoy and Emma Strood.

A total of 1,309 student-athletes were named to the 2022-23 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll. which is based on grades from the 2022-23 academic calendar.

Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria will be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

LSU softball puts 11 on SEC Academic Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU softball is represented by 11 student-athletes on the 2023 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll announced Thursday by the Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey.

Selections from LSU softball include Ciara Briggs, Emilee Casanova, Raelin Chaffin, Georgia Clark, Madilyn Giglio, Raeleen Gutierrez, Ali Kilponen, Ali Newland, Sydney Peterson, Taylor Pleasants and Savannah Stewart.

A total of 1,454 student-athletes across the league were honored, representing the sports of baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track & field. The award is based on grades from the 2022 Summer, 2022 Fall and 2023 Spring terms.

LSU’s Michaela Rose named LSWA Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year

Michaela Rose was named to the Freshman All-SEC Team this season, as well.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Three representatives from the LSU cross country program were awarded with end-of-season honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Thursday afternoon.

Michaela Rose was the lone Tiger to earn a superlative, taking home the LSWA Women’s Cross-Country Freshman of the Year honor for her first season with the distance crew.

The Virginia native was a Freshman All-SEC Team member after finishing in 22nd at the SEC Championships, helping lead the team to a seventh-place finish in conference. Rose also helped the Tigers to their highest finish in school history at the NCAA South-Central Regional.

During the season, Rose recorded a personal-best time of 17:16.6 in the 5k at the Florida State Invitational. She also recorded a PR of 20:32.3 in the 6k at the SEC Championships in Oxford.

In addition to Rose’s award, Rose, Lorena Rangel-Batres, and Jackson Martingayle were named to the All-LSWA teams; these selections were based off the quickest 6k and 8k times of the year in competition. A full list of all the award winners can be viewed below.

LSU track adds Baylor transfer Dillon Bedell

Dillon Bedell helped lead the Bears to a Big 12 title in the 4×400-meter.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Baylor transfer, Dillon Bedell, signed a national-letter-of-intent with the LSU men’s track and field program, Head Coach Dennis Shaver announced.

The junior sprinter reigns from Dallas, Texas, and had attended Baylor University the last two seasons before entering the portal. The men’s 4×400-meter relay team graduated two athletes (Dorian Camel and Ashton Hicks), making Bedell a much-needed addition to the team.

“I want to be one of the best and to be around the best,” said Bedell. “LSU has all of that whether it be coaches or athletes.”

He holds a personal-best time of 45.46 seconds in the 400 meter, clocking the time at the 2023 Big 12 Outdoor Championships. His 400m time has allowed him to be apart of some special 4×400 teams, most recently helping the team finish first in conference and sixth at the NCAA Championships during the outdoor season.

Bedell has also had some great performances in college in the 200 meter, holding a personal best time of 20.89 seconds.

Prior to college, Bedell was a four-year letter winner at Lancaster High School. He was a UIL 5A State Champion in Texas in the 400m, Region 2-5A 400m Champion, and First Team All-DFW.

LSU baseball championship celebration set for Wednesday night at The Box

The celebration begins at 7:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.

BATON ROUGE — The LSU Baseball team will commemorate its 2023 National Championship on Wednesday, June 28, with a celebration at Alex Box Stadium – Skip Bertman Field.

The celebration will start at 7:30 p.m. CT with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. The event is expected to last for approximately one hour.

Admission is free and will be general admission for all non-premium areas. Food and beverages will be available for purchase inside the stadium. Alex Box Suites, Terraces and Champions Club will be reserved and ticketed.

In addition, LSU’s National Championship gear and merchandise will be available for purchase at Alex Box.

Fans may enter Alex Box through gates 0-3. Field level seating will be reserved for guests of LSU Baseball and the University. LSU Athletics’ Geaux Safe clear bag policy will be in place for the event. No outside food or drinks will be permitted.

Free parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Hall of Fame, Old Front Nine, Gourrier South, Levee South and Hayfield Lots.

The celebration will include the presentation of the national championship trophy, along with remarks from several dignitaries. Head Coach Jay Johnson will address the crowd along with members of the baseball team. The celebration will conclude with a fireworks show.

For fans who cannot attend, the ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook WatchYouTube and on SEC Network+. A replay will also be available on LSU GOLD when the celebration concludes.

Champions Club & Suite Season Ticket Holder Information:
All Champions Club, Suite, and Terrace Season Ticket holders will be sent complimentary tickets for the celebration. You will not need the ticket to enter the stadium, but will be scanned upon entry to the Champions Club or Suite level. All tickets will be sent via mobile delivery. LSU soccer’s Taylor Dobles to represent Puerto Rico at 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games

The games will be played from June 29 to July 7.

SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR – LSU Soccer forward Taylor Dobles has been named to the Puerto Rican Women’s National Team for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador.

Dobles will take the international stage and represent Puerto Rico for the second time this year after making her debut with the national team in April for a friendly match between Puerto Rico and Xolos Femenil of Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil.

She earned her first start with the team in the friendly and recorded the lone goal for El Huracán Azul to lead her team to a 1-0 victory. The goal marked her first on the international stage.

Dobles and Team Puerto Rico will take on Mexico, Jamaica and El Salvador in this summer’s Central American and Caribbean Games at Las Delicias Stadium.

The games will be played from June 29 to July 7, which features women’s teams from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti and Venezuela in Group A, while El Salvador, Mexico, Jamaica and Puerto Rico make up Group B.

Preliminary play is set to begin on Thursday, June 29, as Puerto Rico takes on Mexico at 8 p.m. CT. The tournament continues with competitions against Jamaica on July 1 at 8 p.m. CT and El Salvador on July 3 at 11 p.m. CT.

LSU softball lands transfer Kelley Lynch

The utility pitcher spent the past four years at Washington.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Kelley Lynch, a 2023 NFCA Pacific All-Region selection for Washington, is joining the LSU softball team, head coach Beth Torina announced.

Lynch, a Newnan, Ga. native, is a utility pitcher who capped her four-year career with the Huskies with a 25-14 record in the circle behind 308 strikeouts and has held opposing batters to a .199 clip over 241.0 innings pitched. At the plate, Lynch has totaled 117 hits, including 20 home runs, 96 RBIs and has scored 70 runs. 

Lynch aided Washington to its 15th Women’s College World Series appearance in 2023 and earned a spot on the NFCA Pacific All-Region team after registering a 9-3 record with a 2.43 ERA, 101 strikeouts and a staff-low .178 opposing batting average in 77.2 innings pitched. Lynch also contributed inside the batter’s box with a .276 batting average with 29 hits, 20 RBIs and three home runs. 

Lynch will be a fifth-year senior in 2024. She graduated in spring 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in communication and minored in real estate and business. Lynch will pursue a master’s degree in sports management at LSU. 

LSU is coming off its 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers will return six 2023 All-SEC selections, including two-time Gold Glove Award Winner Ciara Briggs and NFCA All-American pitcher Sydney Berzon.

LSU beach volleyball’s Cati Leak named to AVCA 30 under 30

A former player at LSU, Leak has been on the staff as an assistant since 2019.

BATON ROUGE – LSU Beach Volleyball assistant coach Cati Leak was named to Tuesday’s AVCA Thirty Under 30 list.

“It is an honor,” Leak said of being named to the thiry under 30 list. “I cannot be in this position without my coworkers, our players, and mentors. They have poured their time, energy, and effort into my life and the programs I have been a part of. I am grateful to have been in the position to receive this. It is motivating to continue to give back to the sport that has been used to teach me so much. If I can share what I have learned and it impacts someone for the better, then I will do it forever!”

Leak has been an assistant coach with the Tigers since the 2019 season in a stretch where LSU has never been outside of the AVCA Top 10. Every year that she has coached has ended with a trip to Gulf Shores at the NCAA Championship with the Tigers. LSU was ranked No. 1 during when the 2020 season came to a shortened end.

On the court as a coach, Leak has coached five All-Americans at LSU, including the pair of Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth who went undefeated in 2021 and won AVCA Pair of the Year. She has also coached 10 pairs that have earned AVCA Top Flight honors.

Leak’s presence from the very beginning has been a critical component to LSU’s rise to national prominence in beach volleyball. She was on the inaugural LSU Beach Volleyball team in 2014, helping build the program from the ground up. In four seasons as a player, Leak won 73 matches and as a senior she helped lead LSU to its first National Championship Tournament berth which since then, has become the expectation within the program.

LSU gymnastics adds Florida transfer Savannah Schoenherr

The all-around performer was a three-time All-American with the Gators.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Gymnastics program and head coach Jay Clark announce the addition of graduate transfer Savannah Schoenherr to the squad for the upcoming 2024 season.

“We’re so excited that Savannah is coming to join us. She is a proven competitor with championship experience,” said head coach Jay Clark. “She knows what the SEC is all about and provides us with tangible depth. I think her experience and wealth of talent is going to enhance our ability to be competitive, as well as her personality and her leadership.”

Schoenherr will be joining the Tigers from the University of Florida, where she spent the last five seasons and made three NCAA Championship Final appearances with the Gators.

A native of Athens, Georgia, Schoenherr is an all-around competitor who will provide experience and depth for the LSU lineups. She is looking forward to embracing Tiger nation in her final year of competition.

“I chose LSU because as soon as I stepped on campus, I could tell everyone loved each other like family. It is evident that everyone is highly valued, regardless of their role and I can’t wait to be a part of such a positive and loving environment,” said Schoenherr.

“The genuine care and respect that every single person shows each other is so admirable. Not to mention the immense talent this team possesses that will push me to be better in every way. This is a national championship caliber team and I’m more than excited for this opportunity!”

In her time with the Gators, Schoenherr was named a three-time All-American, three-time Scholastic All-American, five-time SEC Academic Honor Roll and All-SEC member.

Schoenherr set multiple career highs during her senior season in 2022, including career bests on vault to share the win at the NC State quad meet and on bars against Arkansas. She owns career highs of 9.975 on vault, 9.975 on bars, 9.875 on beam and 9.925 on floor.

As a junior, Schoenherr appeared in the vault and bars lineups in 10 competitions for the Gators and made her collegiate debut on beam. She was named SEC Specialist of the Week in 2021 after winning the vault title against Arkansas with her score of 9.950.

She earned regular season All-America honors on bars in 2020 after competing on the event in every meet as a sophomore. In that same year, she posted a career high floor score of a 9.925 against Penn State.

Schoenherr had a standout freshman season at Florida in 2019 as she competed in every meet on vault and bars. She notched her first career All-America honors on vault in her first year after scoring a 9.875 at the NCAA Championships Semifinals and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team after tying for fourth on bars at the SEC Championships.

Prior to her time at Florida, Schoenherr was a two-time J.O. National team member and was named the bars champion in 2015 and 2018. She is also a three-time Region 8 bars champion (2015, 2017 & 2018) and the 2018 Georgia Level 10 all-around and bars champion.

The Georgia native trained at Georgia Elite Gymnastics, where she was coached by Pete Arenas and Cassidy McComb Bernstein. She became the first in Georgia High School Association (GHSA) history to sweep five event titles at the 2018 state championships.

Schoenherr earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management in August of 2021 and most recently completed her master’s degree in sport management in May. She will pursue her degree in leadership and human resource development at LSU this coming fall.

LSU golf’s Ingrid Lindblad named First Team Academic All-American

The No. 1 ranked women’s amateur in the world dominates on and off the course.

BATON ROUGE – LSU senior women’s golfer Ingrid Lindblad added another honor to her lengthy outstanding resume’ as she was named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America Women’s At-Large First Team Thursday as selected by the College Sports Communications (CSC).

The At-Large category, in addition to golf, covers such women’s sports as lacrosse, fencing, beach volleyball, rowing, skiing, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey and rifle.

Lindblad, a four-time consensus first-team All-America for her efforts on the course where she has 11 collegiate wins and is the No. 1 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, graduated this past May with her degree from LSU.

The native of Sweden posted a 3.94 GPA in Sports Administration.

Lindblad averaged 70.65 this past season and has the top four stroke averages in LSU history, all under 71.00 strokes per round. She posted two wins this past season. She finished tied for fifth in the NCAA Championships in May and is coming off a semifinal round appearance in the prestigious Women’s Amateur Championship in England this past week.

She is the second player in LSU women’s golf history to earn a CSC Academic All-America At-Large first team citation, joining Devon Day, who earned the honor in 2003.

College Sports Communicators (CSC) began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors.
