5. Who is, technically, overrated in the 2022 AP Top 25 Preseason College Football Poll?

It’s all subjective, obviously, but who’s overrated and who’s underrated compared to the CFN 2022 Preseason Rankings 1-131? Here are five possible overrated teams.

No. 5 Notre Dame
Totally nitpicking here. Notre Dame is going to be terrific. There’s no excuse to not be in the CFP mix – even after starting the season against Ohio State – and nothing less than a New Year’s Six bowl game will be okay.

Five is a wee bit high considering how strong Michigan should be and with Oregon, Utah, and USC all knocked down a peg. The Irish should be around 10ish instead of top 5, but it’s hardly a crazy ranking.
Notre Dame Preview

No. 6 Texas A&M
In theory Texas A&M should be No. 6 good, and the talent level is there after this latest loaded recruiting class, but the program might be a year or so away from being worth this much respect.

Outside of that new haul of talent – which matters, of course – is A&M about to make the leap from unranked like it was at the end of last season to the top 6? Top 20, yes, but gut feeling – the voters remember the Alabama win of 2021 and ranked accordingly.
Texas A&M Preview

[lawrence-related id=549564]

No. 10 Baylor
100% getting it that we might be on the wrong side of the Baylor call this year. The defense will be great, the offense just fine, and … the Big 12 will be stronger. Rankings shouldn’t be predictive and need to be based on how good the teams are, but compared to a slew of Others Receiving Votes teams – more on that in the Underrated section – Baylor at 10 is a tad rich.
Baylor Preview

CFN Preseason Rankings

No. 16 Miami
I like Miami, you like Miami, we all like Miami. Warm weather, cool program, Mario Cristobal taking over, Tyler Van Dyke a rising star quarterback – 16 is too high. The Canes aren’t there yet. It’s not horribly off – they should be top 25 – but ahead of Arkansas, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Ole Miss? No.
Miami Preview

No. 22 Wake Forest
PLEASE forgive how gross this is to consider a young man’s medical condition as a factor in any sort of football analysis, but to be fair, I would’ve put Wake Forest in the Overrated category before the announcement of Sam Hartman’s non-football related medical issue.

Talent-wise – and if the teams were playing on the field in Week 1 – give me at least ten Also Receiving Votes programs over Wake Forest. Tennessee, Penn State, LSU being front and center.

AP Top 25 Preseason Poll, Rankings Prediction: Post-Coaches Poll Release

Predicting the preseason AP Poll and rankings before they come out, changing up a previous version after the Coaches Poll was released.

What will the 2022 preseason AP Poll potentially be? It’s our predicted best guess on the early college football rankings, changed up after the preseason Coaches Poll was released.

The AP preseason college football poll has been an annual part of the preseason hype since 1950. It sets the tone for the season, cranks up the expectations for the top teams, and it gives fan bases something to chirp about – or get mad at.

So what will the AP rankings potentially look like? We did this exercise a few weeks ago, and then the 2022 Coaches Poll came out. Most of the AP types got their rankings in before last week, but it should still come in relatively close to the Coaches Poll pin.

Last year, both the AP and Coaches had Alabama No. 1 in their respective preseason polls. They both had Ohio State 4, Georgia 5, Texas A&M 6, and they both had the same teams in the top ten, but in different orders.

They both whiffed on Michigan – unranked in both polls – and they both overloved, Miami, LSU, Indiana, Penn State, Washington, and Texas.

The AP ranked Utah (24) and Arizona State (25), and the Coaches ranked Oklahoma State (22), and Ole Miss (25). Other than those, they had the same 23 ranked in some configuration.

With all of that in mind, we’re not going to change this too much, but there’s some tweaking to do. One quick prediction note – don’t be shocked if Ohio State is closer to No. 1. Alabama got 1634 points, the Buckeyes 1564.

Below is NOT the actual 2022 Preseason AP Poll – it’s our prediction and projection of what it might be before its release on Monday.

The AP poll is the longest running college football measuring stick going, and it’s still – along with the USA TODAY Coaches Poll – a great indication of how the top teams are viewed and where the expectations are set.

Lately the preseason poll pretty much mirrors the Coaches version, but there are always a few tweaks and differences with a few more non-traditional teams getting a little more love – last year’s had Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina higher than the Coaches Poll did.

This year isn’t going to be quite as crazy as last year coming off the strange 2020, but this season there should be a whole lot of differences from the Coaches Poll with so many questions outside of the top five.

The 2021 Preseason AP Poll had Alabama No. 1, Oklahoma No. 2, Clemson No. 3, Ohio State No. 4. Eventual national champion Georgia came in at 5, Cincinnati was 8, and Michigan was stuck in the Also Receiving Votes abyss.

AP Preseason Top 25

5. Who is, technically, overrated in the 2021 AP Preseason Top 25 College Football Poll?

Everyone likes to say things are overrated and underrated, but who’s rating them? The AP is, so at least by projection – and it’s all subjective, obviously, compared to the CFN 2021 Preseason Rankings 1-130 – here are five possible overrated teams.

No. 8 Cincinnati
Cincinnati will end up being ranked high all season long considering it really is very, very good, and if it beats Notre Dame it’ll certainly be worth of the top ten call. However, it’s the yearly struggle when it comes to Group of Five programs.

Can Cincinnati beat the Irish? Absolutely. Can it beat Indiana, too? Yeah.  But it’s the constant beatdown of Power Five team after Power Five team that makes the teams in the top conferences so strong. Again, this is a great Cincinnati team, but it’s also getting by rankings-wise a wee bit on a 2020 schedule without a win over a Power Five program.

How many American Athletic Conference teams are ranked in the top 25 besides Cincinnati? Exactly.
Cincinnati Preview

[lawrence-related id=533590]

No. 10 North Carolina
It’s nitpicking time here – North Carolina is more like a top 15 team going into the season than top ten. Yes, it did a nice job reloading some of the key positions, and yes, Sam Howell will be some NFL team’s starting quarterback next year at this time, but the Tar Heels lost a whole lot of firepower off a team that went 8-4.
North Carolina Preview

No. 17 Indiana
Like all preseason college football rankings, they’re based on what happened the year before, who’s returning, and a little bit of brand name momentum. However, Indiana finished last year losing to Ole Miss and – give the Hoosiers credit for getting the job done – was able to rock in a bad year for the Big Ten East.

Partially because QB Michael Penix Jr. – who should be okay – is just coming off a knee injury, and the East should be stronger, this is more of a fringe top 25 team than 17.
Indiana Preview

No. 22 Coastal Carolina & No. 23 Louisiana
Right here, right now, you have to bet Junior’s juice money on Utah or Auburn or Michigan or Oklahoma State vs. Coastal Carolina or Louisiana … you’re not taking the Chanticleers or Ragin’ Cajuns with total certainty.

The Sun Belt stars are terrific, but this is getting a tad cheeky considering Liberty – who returns everyone and beat Coastal Carolina last year – is technically ranked 29th.

Auburn was the only SEC team with a winning record last season to be left out of the 2021 preseason AP Top 25.

Well, it’s official.

Auburn will start the season unranked for the first time since 2016.

Despite being one of only five SEC teams to finish 2020 with a winning record, Auburn comes into 2021 unranked, sitting among the others receiving votes behind Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, TCU and Liberty.

Before we get going, please note that below is NOT the actual 2021 Preseason AP Poll – it’s our prediction and projection of what it might be before its release on August 16th.

We did this a few weeks ago, but with the release of the 2021 Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll, we’ve tweaked it a bit – the AP and Coaches are usually relatively close to each other.

Throughout the year the AP rankings are a great indication of how the rest of college football – at least the media types – views what’s happening. They’re a terrific measuring stick, especially before the College Football Playoff rankings come out.

The AP Poll and Coaches Pool both had the same preseason top four rankings last year – Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia – and they both had Notre Dame No. 10 and Texas A&M 13. The only difference in the top 14 was 5/6 with the AP putting Oklahoma 5 and LSU 6, and the Coaches going the other way around.

In other words, the AP and Coaches are both about the same. This year, though, after a crazy 2020 with a whole lot of new teams in the mix, expect more changes and differences than ever.

Again, this is just a prediction and not the real preseason AP top 25 poll, so don’t get mad or too happy – we’re making the best educational guess possible on a projection. Once the 2021 preseason AP top 25 poll is released on August 16th, we’ll break it all down and do a deep dive analysis.

3. The AP Poll ranked teams that aren’t playing

It’s going to be the year the AP ranked teams that aren’t doing the whole college football thing.

The AP voters got their rankings in before the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided to postpone their respective seasons, but unlike the Coaches Poll that came out before the conferences went dark, the AP didn’t release its top 25 until a few weeks after.

There was time to adjust.

It’s just not that hard to take the rankings as created by the voters and take out the teams that aren’t playing a 2020 fall season. It took me less than ten minutes to come up with the revised rankings.

If teams aren’t actually playing college football, then what’s the point of putting them in a ranking for a season? The Kansas City Chiefs are playing just as much college football in the fall of 2020 as Ohio State and Oregon are.

This was an easy way for the AP Top 25 Poll to shine a light on programs that normally would struggle to get close to the preseason top 25.

Appalachian State and Memphis would’ve been in. How much would it have mattered to a place like Arizona State, or Louisville, or Kentucky to make a preseason top 25 of teams actually playing?

And now what do you do? What, you honored Ohio State by giving it a preseason No. 2 ranking? All that does is mock the fan base with the Christmas present they don’t get to open.

But there’s a reason for all of this …

Maybe the AP has this right. Maybe there won’t be a season after all, all the teams will cancel before it all gets going, and the preseason top 25 is a representative snapshot of what the season was supposed to be like.

Just call it an awkward moment in this year when everyone is trying to adjust on the fly.

For some reason, the AP wasn’t able to adjust and do its preseason rankings correctly – it included teams that aren’t even playing this year.

Here’s what it should be, based on schools still expected to play college football in 2020.
