Practice notes from Day 1 of the Senior Bowl

We’ve got the latest buzz and practice notes from Day 1 of the Senior Bowl on Hendon Hooker, Tyjae Spears, and O’Cyrus Torrence, via @RossJacksonNOLA and @MaddyHudak_94:

The Senior Bowl has become the premier destination for thousands of draft analysts, media members, NFL coaches, scouts and more to get an early look at NFL draft prospects. The New Orleans Saints are heavily involved in this year’s Senior Bowl coaching staff with four members serving in various roles. That means the Saints brass is getting an up-close-and-personal look at what this year’s class has to offer.

While the quarterback class in Mobile, Ala. this year is a bit lighter than in year’s past, they will certainly be a focus for New Orleans. But so too will the trenches, running backs and other premium players who made the trip to Alabama this winter. Know what the Saints would be interested in and where their attention would be, here are our observations from Day 1 of Senior Bowl practice:

Jarvis Landry up, 5 others ruled out on final Week 10 Saints injury report vs. Steelers

Jarvis Landry up, 5 others ruled out on final Week 10 Saints injury report vs. Steelers

Let’s start with the good news. The New Orleans Saints didn’t list slot receiver Jarvis Landry with any game status this week, meaning he’ll play in Week 10’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers despite having been limited in practice due to an ankle injury.

Now the bad news. The Saints ruled out five players due to injuries with four others questionable to play. Two of those who are questionable are new additions in defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon and safety P.J. Williams, both dealing with illnesses. Neither of them practiced on Friday after participating fully earlier in the week.

Here’s the full Week 10 Saints injury report:

Juwan Johnson (hamstring) added to updated Week 8 Saints injury report vs. Raiders

Juwan Johnson (hamstring) added to updated Week 8 Saints injury report vs. Raiders:

That’s ominous. The updated New Orleans Saints injury report dropped after Thursday’s practice session, identical to the previous injury report on Wednesday but for one addition: tight end Juwan Johnson, who was limited with a hamstring injury. Hopefully it isn’t a serious issue for Johnson, who has played more snaps on offense than anyone outside the offensive line, coming off his two touchdown receptions in last week’s loss.

The Saints will need everyone available to line up against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8, so stay tuned for final word on Friday’s injury report. Here is the latest ahead of that Sunday kickoff (we’ll update with the Raiders injury report once it’s published Thursday evening):

Marcus Maye practices fully on updated Week 7 Saints injury report vs. Cardinals

Marcus Maye upgraded on Week 7 New Orleans Saints injury report vs. Arizona Cardinals, via @DillySanders:

The New Orleans Saints are still without wide receiver Michael Thomas,  slot receiver Jarvis Landry or star cornerback Marshon Lattimore at Tuesday’s practice, per the latest Week 7 injury report ahead of Thursday night’s game with the Arizona Cardinals. The only big changes between the two teams were Jalen Thompson returning for the Cardinals and Marcus Maye becoming a full participant for the Saints.

It’s important to remember that this is a short week, it’ll be interesting to see the turnaround for some people. Here’s the full injury report for Tuesday’s practices:

Jameis Winston joins team drills and more key takeaways from Saints’ Aug. 22 practice

Saints QB Jameis Winston took team drill snaps today, marking a big milestone in his return to action. Key takeaways from Monday’s practice, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

As the New Orleans Saints returned to their home facility Monday on Airline Drive, they also returned to familiar ways. The defense again dominated the day. Star players like defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and linebacker Demario Davis made plays and barked loudly and consistently at the offense throughout practice. The intensity of the day was driven by that unit. Here are our key takeaways from Monday’s practice, including those highlight defensive moments, but a very important step forward for the offense by quarterback Jameis Winston.
