Going into the 2023 football season, Auburn Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Up next is Auburn native [autotag]Powell Gordon[/autotag]. The linebacker entered the portal in April but returned to the Tigers after [autotag]DeMario Tolan[/autotag] left the program in July.

Preseason Player Profile

Hometown: Auburn, Alabama

Height: 6-3

Weight: 220

Class in 2023: Redshirt Freshman

247Sports Composite Ranking

Three-Star / No. 29 in Alabama / No. 65 LB

Depth Chart Overview

Gordon did not see the field in his first season on the Plains and entered the portal after spring practice. Getting him back to fortify the depth at linebacker was well done after the departure of Tolan but he likely needs more time to develop before contributing.

He was primarily a pass-rusher at Auburn High School and is still learning the linebacker position and with Auburn adding several experienced transfers his role could once again be limited in 2022. One path to playing time could be on special teams while the coaching staff continues to help him develop for 2023 and beyond.

Linebacker Powell Gordon has exited the transfer portal and returned to Auburn

He entered the portal back in April after not seeing the field as a freshman.

After entering the transfer portal back in April, linebacker [autotag]Powell Gordon[/autotag] has withdrawn from the portal and returned to Auburn, according to a [autotag]report from On3’s Justin Hokanson[/autotag].

Gordon is once again listed on Auburn’s online roster and is set to play his redshirt freshman season on the Plains. His return gives Auburn eight scholarship linebackers after the departure of DeMario Tolan earlier in the week.

Gordon did not see any game action last year as he redshirted. The Auburn, Alabama native was named to the SEC first-year academic honor roll.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder will add important depth at linebacker and could also see some time at the jack position.

Auburn linebacker Powell Gordon has reportedly entered the transfer portal

He is the third linebacker to enter the transfer portal.

Auburn has lost yet another linebacker to the transfer portal. This time it’s [autotag]Powell Gordon[/autotag], according to a report from Auburn Undercover’s Jason Caldwell.

The redshirt freshman is from Auburn High and is the third linebacker to enter the portal this offseason, following [autotag]Desmond Tisdol[/autotag] and [autotag]Kameron Brown[/autotag].

Gordon was a member of Auburn’s 2022 recruiting class and did not see the field in his only season on the Plains. The 6-foot-2, 222-pounder was set to be a reserve this season and it would have been tough for him to carve out a role for himself in a crowded linebacker room.

He is the fifth Auburn player to enter the portal during its spring window, with wide receiver [autotag]Tar’Varish Dawson[/autotag] and defensive end [autotag]Jeffrey M’Ba[/autotag] also announcing their intentions to leave the program.

Get to know the newest Auburn Tigers

As of right now, at 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15, Auburn has the 14th best recruiting class in the country and seventh in the SEC.

Auburn has signed 17 players and has one more commit who will not sign in the early signing period. Also, top target Jeffrey M’ba will not be announcing where he signed until Dec. 19th.

Here is a look at every player Auburn has signed and the one commit who has yet to sign.

Overview of Auburn’s recruiting class ahead of early signing period

Here are some future Auburn Tigers.

With the early signing period rapidly approaching (Dec. 15), Auburn is kicking it’s recruiting into high gear. The Tigers are looking to add to a recruiting class that has several open spots and could use some more talent. Auburn is in the hunt for several elite recruits like 4-star wide receiver Darrius Clemons.

With Auburn looking to add to their class, here is a look at the players Auburn has committed to their 2022 recruiting class ahead of the early signing period.

Class Ranking: 33rd nationally, 12th in SEC

Total commits: 13

Auburn now has the 12th ranked recruiting class in the SEC according to 247Sports. There is still time to add to the class, but this is a position Auburn never wants to be in.

Average rating per commit: 88.20

Auburn’s average recruiting ranking of 88.20 is just under the 90.00 grade needed to be a 4-star recruit and is good enough for eighth in the SEC. That is lower than Auburn wants to be but is a more accurate picture of the class than their overall ranking in the SEC.

Auburn’s recruiting has been a big talking point this week among fans that are critical of Bryan Harsin.

He completed 11-of-14 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns in Benedictine’s 63-7 win over Leula.

He will become a big name to know over the next two offseasons.

These future Tigers had a great performance on Friday night.
