Primeira Liga is back with its second week of action, we have Moreirense taking on Rio Ave this afternoon in the first game.

We’re into the second week of Primeira Liga and on Friday we have three matches. In the first game, we’ll have Moreirense taking on Rio Ave, while Moreirense doesn’t have much to play for, Rio Ave will be looking to get back to it’s winning ways after a shocking loss last week.

Primeira Liga will be holding matches without fans and will be taking into all precautions keeping the players, coaches, and folks involved safe.

Moreirense vs. Rio Ave

Rio Ave was cruising along with a nine-game unbeaten streak before coming back from break but they fell to Pacos de Ferreira last week. Without too much pressure from Moreirense, they should be able to bounce back. I do expect a tough fought match between these two clubs with a lot of pride on the line for Moreirense.

In their first game back, Porto was absolutely stunned by Famalicao, losing 2-1, which had knocked them out of their top spot for the moment.  That didn’t last long with Benfica managing to draw and both teams are still tied for that first place spot going into today’s games.

Maritimo last time out ended in a goalless draw against Vitoria Setubal to snap a three-game losing streak. They have a tough matchup today as Porto will look to get back to their winning ways.

Before the break, Porto was red hot and had overtaken Benfica at the top of the Primeira table. This match will be played in a neutral site that will most likely benefit Porto as well, they won the last meeting 3-0 and will look to continue their hot streak.

Meanwhile, Famalicao has trailed off as the season has gone on, early on they lost only one of their opening 11 games but before the break had just won three of their last 13. They are hoping the break will help them in the second half of the Primeira Liga.

La Primeira Liga de Portugal reanuda actividades tras la pausa por la pandemia desde el pasado 8 de marzo. Quedan 10 fechas y un apretado calendario por cumplir que tendrá prácticamente partidos todos los días hasta el 26 de julio, fecha en que conoceremos al campeón de Portugal.

El equipo con más puntos será proclamado campeón y conseguirá su boleto a la fase de grupos de la Champions League, mientras que el segundo lugar del torneo se clasificará a la ronda preliminar de Champions.

El tercer puesto obtiene su boleto directo a la fase de grupos de Europa League y el cuarto puesto a la ronda preliminar de la misma competición.

El descenso lo determinan los dos últimos puestos de la tabla general al finalizar el campeonato por lo que aún quedan muchas emociones por descubrir del futbol luso.

La lucha por el título

Todo parece indicar que el campeón lo definirán Porto (60) y Benfica (59), pues muy lejos se encuentra el Braga (46) y el Sporting Lisboa (42).

El Porto reanuda actividad el día de mañana miércoles 3 ante el Familicao (37) que marcha en séptima posición, mientras que el Benfica hará lo propio el jueves frente al Tondela (25) que se encuentra en la posición catorce.

Por un lugar en Europa

Tal parece que los dos puestos de Champions serán ocupados por Porto y Benfica al final de la temporada pues la ventaja que llevan sobre sus perseguidores es amplia y solo quedará definir qué equipo va directo a grupos y cuál a la ronda preliminar.

La lucha será por los dos puestos de Europa League pues habría hasta cinco equipos involucrados por dos boletos: Braga (46), Sporting Lisboa (42), Río Ave (38), Guimaraes (37) y Familicao (37).

La pelea por el descenso

Los dos últimos puestos de la tabla descienden en Portugal, tal parece que Desportivo Aves (13) y Portimonense (16) tienen la soga en el cuello pero un descuido de Pacos de Ferreira (22), Marítimo (24) o hasta el Tondela (25) podría dar un giro interesante a la lucha por la quema en la Primeira Liga.

Una de esas Copas del Mundo fue la de Sudáfrica 2010 donde el mexicano fue el encargado de silbar el encuentro de fase de grupos entre Brasil y Portugal en un complicado partido pues era el último del Grupo G de aquella competición y ambos equipos les bastaba no perder para avanzar a la siguiente ronda.

“Ambos no tenían que perder para poder avanzar a la siguiente fase, entonces fue un partido bastante complicado. Amonesté a siete jugadores en el primer tiempo y me bastó para controlar el partido y Cristiano se acercó a mí al medio tiempo a decirme ‘oiga míster, ya me di cuenta que usted es de manita dura, ya nosotros nos vamos a comportar y vamos a tratar de jugar, no queremos que nos expulse porque queremos jugar el siguiente partido’, yo le dije ‘bueno, la decisión no es mía, es suya’”, reveló Archundia en entrevista para ESPN.

El buen trabajo del mexicano le valió para tener el reconocimiento de la figura portuguesa Cristiano Ronaldo quien no dudó en felicitarlo al finalizar el partido y entregarle su camiseta como recuerdo de aquel partido.

“Al final del partido (Cristiano) fue y me dijo: ‘Muchas gracias, buen partido que controló y dirigió, nosotros entendemos que los portugueses somos de carácter muy fuerte, no somos fáciles para ustedes. Le voy a mandar una playera, no me lo tome a mal’ y me hizo favor de entregarme la playera”, añadió el exárbitro. finalizó Archundia.

France, Germany, Portugal, Croatia, England and the Netherlands can each secure automatic qualification to Euro 2020 when the qualifying phase resumes on Matchday 9. Cristiano Ronaldo and the defending champions are still in danger of missing out on second in Group B, but a win over Lithuania on Thursday could be enough if Serbia fails to beat Luxembourg.

Current world champions and Euro 2016 runner-up France remains second in Group H. While level on points with Turkey, who leads via head-to-head, France will qualify as long as it beats Moldova at home. Didier Deschamps’ side can still be knocked out of the top-two running by third-place Iceland, who travel to Turkey on Thursday in need of a win if its to snatch an automatic spot.

Germany and the Netherlands are engaged in another close fight for the summit in Group C. De Oranje holds the head-to-head advantage over Germany with the pair level on points, while Northern Ireland holds a glimmer of hope to finish top two, currently three points behind in third.

Ronald Koeman takes the Netherlands to Windsor Park in Belfast on Saturday, while Germany hosts Belarus, each needing just one more point to cement their places in first and second, respectively.

England has suffered one loss in qualifying and need one point at home to Montenegro to guarantee a top-two finish, while a win would ensure they take the top spot. However, third-place Kosovo hopes a result away to the Czech Republic can cause one last shift in Group A.

Croatia plays its final match of the qualifying campaign at home to Slovakia on Saturday. One point would be enough to ensure the team finishes first in Group E. Gareth Bale’s Wales team is currently fourth in the pool and four points below second-place Hungary, who it has to beat at home if it’s to prolong an automatic qualification chance.

Spain has already wrapped up its Euro 2020 fate and looks set to finish first in Group F, but it’ll host bottom-dweller Malta on Friday in what promises to be a fairly one-sided fixture.
