Sean Payton’s ‘heart is broken’ after New Orleans terrorist assault

“My heart is broken for the loss of a lot of innocent lives,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of the terrorist assault in New Orleans.

At least 15 people were killed and more than 30 were injured when a terrorist drove a truck into a crowd at a New Year’s Eve celebration on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Wednesday morning.

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton, who coached the New Orleans Saints from 2006-2021, was asked about the tragedy after Wednesday’s practice.

“I only saw what you guys saw,” Payton said. “My heart is broken for the loss of a lot of innocent lives.  I haven’t seen any of the news specifically. I just know how late it happened and it’s awful. I’ll catch up when I go upstairs as to what exactly happened.

“It’s just gut-wrenching news, especially this time of year. There’s no great time of the year, but when it happens when so many people are down there for the bowl game and down there for the New Years festivities. I hate it.”

The Sugar Bowl between the Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish was scheduled to be played at the Caesars Superdome on Wednesday, but the game was postponed after the terrorist assault. The game has now been rescheduled for Thursday.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix opened his Wednesday media availability by saying his thoughts and prayers were with those impacted by the attack.

“First off, [my] thoughts and prayers are with the state of Louisiana right now,” Nix said. “Obviously, a tragedy. My heart goes out to them.”

Fourth person arrested following Josh Reynolds shooting

Daniel Olivarez was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder (and other charges) following the Josh Reynolds shooting.

A fourth person has been arrested in connection to the Josh Reynolds shooting in October, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Darren Whitehead.

Police arrested Daniel Olivarez, 30, on Dec. 16. He was taken into custody on suspicion of six counts of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of attempted first-degree assault, three counts of illegally discharging a firearm, six counts of weapon used during a violent crime and four counts of violent crime causing death or serious bodily injury.

Olivarez is set to appear in court on Dec. 24. He has a cash-only bail of $300,000.

Two other men — Luis Mendoza, 35, and Burr Charlesworth, 42 — were previously arrested with charges including six counts of attempted first-degree murder. Another man, Dirk Lisica-Lange, 31, was arrested “on suspicion of attempting to influence a public servant.”

Reynolds, 29, was shot after leaving a Denver area strip club on Oct. 18. He was already on injured reserve with a finger injury when the shooting happened. The Denver Broncos released Reynolds before his deadline to return from IR and the wide receiver now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Josh Reynolds comments publicly for first time since shooting

“It [was] a crazy ordeal,” Josh Reynolds said of being shot. “But, hey, I’m here now. I’m in sunny Florida. I’m just blessed to be here.”

Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot in his left arm and in the back of his head after leaving a strip club on Oct. 18. The Broncos described his wounds as minor, and three men have since been arrested in connection to the shooting.

Reynolds was already on injured reserve with a finger injury when the shooting happened. Once Reynold’s window to return from IR was set to close, the Broncos waived him because they had a backlog of receivers.

Reynolds was then claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he spoke publicly about the shooting for the first time after last Friday’s practice.

“Yeah, man, one of them things I had rather put behind me,” Reynolds said, via Mark Long of the Associated Press. “But I mean anybody going through that, man, it is a crazy ordeal. But, hey, I’m here now. I’m in sunny Florida. I’m just blessed to be here.”

Reynolds thanked the Broncos on social media for his time with the team after being cut. With the shooting behind him, the 29-year-old receiver will get a fresh start in Jacksonville.

“Was tough for a few weeks, but I had a good support system behind me,” Reynolds told Long. “A lot of the organization over there was helping me out a lot, so they made it easier for me to kind of transition through that whole process.”

Reynolds hauled in 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in five games with Denver this season.

Third suspect arrested after Josh Reynolds shooting

A third person has been arrested in connection to the Josh Reynolds shooting.

A third suspect has been arrested in connection to the Josh Reynolds shooting from October, according to a report from The Denver Post‘s Shelly Bradbury.

Dirk Lisica-Lange, 31, was arrested last week “on suspicion of attempting to influence a public servant, a low-level felony,” according to Bradbury.

Last month, Luis Mendoza, 35, and Burr Charlesworth, 42, were arrested and their charges included six counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Reynolds and two companions were shot after leaving a club in the Denver area on Oct. 18. They were followed by suspects who fired “at least 30 rounds” into the vehicle carrying Reynolds and two others.

It was a “coordinated, organized” attack, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said in court this week, according to Bradbury.

Reynolds, 29, is a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos. He was already on injured reserve with a finger injury when the shooting happened, and the team described his wounds as minor. The receiver is eligible to return from IR and could be back on the 53-man roster later this week.

Ex-Broncos DC Jack Del Rio arrested for OWI

Jack Del Rio was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, 61, was arrested last Friday for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, it was reported on Monday. Del Rio ran into a street sign and broke a fence, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

Del Rio was a defensive coordinator in Denver from 2012-14, under head coach John Fox, before becoming a head coach in Oakland and Washington.

Prior to his arrest, Del Rio was a senior advisor to University of Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell. After his arrest, Del Rio resigned his post, according to ESPN.

“I’m grateful to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young football players in the country,” Del Rio said in a statement Monday. “I have decided to step away from my position with the team, so they can focus all their attention on the remainder of the season.”

Two men have been charged with attempted murder and other chargers after Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot on Oct. 18.

Two men have been charged with attempted murder and other chargers after Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot on Oct. 18.

Luis Mendoza, 35, faces 23 charges, according to KUSA-TV’s Kevin Vaughan and Janet Oravetz: six counts of attempted first-degree murder; six counts of first-degree assault; three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm; three counts of drug possession; four counts of weapons possession by a previous offender; and one count of possession of a large capacity magazine.

Burr Charlesworth, 42, faces 15 charges: six counts of attempted first-degree murder; six counts of first-degree assault; and three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.

Mendoza has a $300,000 cash-only bail and remains in the Denver County Jail. Charlesworth posted a $100,000 bail and was released.

Reynolds and two others left a Glendale strip club on Oct. 18 and were followed by multiple vehicles. Reynolds was then shot in his arm and the back of his head. One of the men with him was shot in the back and the other man was wounded by flying glass.

From the Vaughan and Oravetz story:

Following his arrest, Charlesworth told investigators he was “helping” a friend who had asked him to follow the victims due to a prior conflict. He denied he ever shot at the victims and said the gunfire came from the other vehicles. He refused to describe those vehicles, according to the court documents.

The Broncos said in a statement that Reynolds suffered minor injuries. Reynolds, 29, was back at practice last week and he was on the sideline for the team’s game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Reynolds is currently on injured reserve with a finger injury. He will be eligible to return from IR next week.

Sean Payton says Josh Reynolds was ‘pretty shaken up’ after shooting

“Josh Reynolds last week was involved in a very serious incident … He was pretty shaken up,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot in the arm in the back of the head after leaving a strip club in the Denver area last week. The receiver’s wounds were only minor, but the incident could have been deadly.

“Let me start with something that’s serious,” Payton said to begin his post-practice press conference on Friday. “I just finished visiting with the team about [it]: Josh Reynolds last week was involved in a very serious incident, shooting. I’m kind of like you where I’ve got the initial details, and he’s fortunate.

“Currently, the league and then obviously the local authorities are handling that. I’ve had a chance to talk with him. He was pretty shaken up and I’ll leave it at that.”

Payton later said the team has counseling and many resources to help support Reynolds after the shooting.

Denver Police arrest two men connected to Josh Reynolds shooting

Denver Police arrested two men who are under investigation for attempted first-degree murder following the Josh Reynolds shooting.

Denver Police have arrested two men in connection to the Josh Reynolds shooting last week.

Police arrested Burr Charlesworth, 42, on Oct. 19 and Luis Mendoza, 35, on Oct. 22, less than a week after the Oct. 18 shooting. The two suspects “are being held for investigation of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault,” according to KDVR’s Heather Willard.

Further suspects may be identified later.

Reynolds and two other men were followed after they left a club early in the morning of Oct. 18. Two of them suffered non-life-threatening injuries when shot. Reynolds was shot in his arm and the back of his head, but the Denver Broncos said in a statement that his injuries were “minor.”

‘The Sheriff’ meets … the sheriff (and he has a cool caddie)

Peyton Manning, ‘The Sheriff,’ met DC’s sheriff at the BWM Championship. Manning competed in the pro-am with Brandon Stokley as his caddie.

Peyton Manning, a.k.a “The Sheriff,” participated in the pro-am portion of the BMW Championship at the Castle Pines Golf Club earlier this week.

While at the golf tournament, Manning met Sheriff Darren Weekly, who serves as the sheriff of Douglas County in Colorado.

“We just couldn’t resist: The Sheriff with ‘The Sheriff,'” The DC sheriff’s office tweeted on Wednesday. “@SheriffWeekly had the pleasure of meeting former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning on the 9th hole of the @BMWchamps ProAm. Manning, famously nicknamed “The Sheriff” by Jon Gruden for how he “lays down the law” in opposing teams’ stadiums, took a moment to chat with our very own Sheriff.”

Now that’s a photo op.

And get this — Manning’s caddie was a former teammate:

That’s right, that’s retired wide receiver Brandon Stokley, who played with Manning with the Indianapolis Colts from 2003-2006 and again with the Broncos in 2012. Manning and Stokley remain close friends.

Chiefs DL Isaiah Buggs charged with animal cruelty

Kansas City Chiefs DL Isaiah Buggs is facing animal cruelty charges in Alabama. | @EdEastonJr

As the Kansas City Chiefs continue with another week of organized team activities, more off-the-field drama is clouding their training. The latest revolves around defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs, who has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty in Alabama.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department received a report that two dogs were left on the back porch of a home being rented by Buggs. Officers and animal control reportedly found a gray and white pit bull and a black Rottweiler on a screened-in back porch without food or water access.

Buggs turned himself in on Thursday and was formally charged and released on bond.

“Under no circumstance does Mr. Buggs condone the mistreatment of any animal,” Buggs’ agent, Trey Robinson, said in a statement to ESPN. “The dogs at issue did not belong to him, and he was unaware they remained at the property in question.”

Buggs played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the last two with the Detroit Lions before signing with the Chiefs in January as a practice squad player. He has never played a down for Kansas City but signed a futures contract in February.
