Test your knowledge with these 10 polar bear facts

It’s time for some polar bear trivia.

It’s after 10 PM in the land of the midnight sun, and I’m on the stern of a small Quark Expeditions cruise ship, watching a polar bear stalk a seal in slow motion. The bear skulks between floating ice pans. A blubbery spotted seal lifts its nose to sniff the air every few minutes, then flops back down. We cruise passengers look back and forth with our binoculars, fingers going numb in the 32-degree night.

Finally, when the bear has almost reached its prey, the seal cries out, “See ya, sucker!” then slips into the water. The frustrated bear pulls itself up onto a sheet of floating ice and performs a series of calisthenics, including downward-facing bear and lying on its back kicking its four feet in the air. Here are just a few factoids about these fascinating bears.

Manitoba’s polar bears are said to be “majestic animals” and “a sight to behold.” Video footage shows what happens when a cub is added.

Manitoba’s polar bears are said to be “majestic animals” and “truly a sight to behold,” according to a Canadian government brochure, but add “adorable” when the sighting is of a polar bear cub attempting to get comfortable while snuggling atop of its mother.

Drew Hamilton was lucky to capture video of this very precious moment and shared it in an Instagram post. (Note: The video doesn’t appear on some media platforms, in which case you’ll need to go to the link to view it.)

“There is only one human settlement in the world where polar bears can be observed in the wild—Churchill, Manitoba,” the brochure says.

And sometimes the views are precious.

Brighten your day with these three cute polar bear videos

Watch these un-bear-ably cute animals play.

Bears may be one of the world’s most adorable wild animals. People love celebrating bears, both the real and teddy variety. Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve even hosts an annual Fat Bear Week competition that always gets social media users excited about brown bears bulking up for winter. All these factors considered, it makes perfect sense that people would turn to bears for a mood boost. If you need to brighten your day, these three cute polar bear videos might just do the trick.

This first video comes from Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. Captured by the Chicago Zoological Society, the clip shows 16-year-old polar bear Hudson and 7-year-old Hope playing with a snowman and rolling around in the snow.

Another adorable video shows a pair of polar bears at the Oregon Zoo in Portland. Filmed on Feb. 23, the clip captures a fun moment between two polar bears frolicking in the snow. According to the National Weather Service Portland, the 22nd was the city’s second snowiest day on record. The frosty weather made conditions ideal for polar bear playtime.

Similarly snowy weather led to this charming polar bear moment at Pennsylvania’s Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. Snowflake, the zoo’s 27-year-old female polar bear, can be seen luxuriating in the falling snow. In some seasons, the zoo hosts “Polar Bear Enrichment” events, which allow visitors to learn more about these lovable animals.
