Pokémon Scarlet and Violet look brilliant, but the transformer legendaries don’t

This could be the best Pokémon generation in quite some time, but the ridable legendary Pokémon are ugly, especially Miraidon.

Let’s get this out of the way: I’m an old-school Pokémon fan. I was there when the anime first started airing, and I played each generation on the day of launch for years. As a child, Pokémon was my obsession. Like most people I’ve grown up a bit, diversified what I fixate on (have you read One Piece?), and while I still play new Pokémon games at launch, I’ll rarely play past the main story. Sorry endgame content, I’m just too busy with being an adult to catch ’em all.

But I’m still here, still watching Pokémon livestreams like it’s my job, and believe it or not, I’m still excited for a brand new Pokémon generation on Nintendo Switch. As outlined in our biggest Violet and Scarlet announcements list, this new generation is doing a lot right. It’s going full open-world, has a gym battle system that you can approach in any order, and even has multiple storylines you can find and follow across the land of Paldea. This obviously more Breath of the Wild-inspired approach looks like it will be a breath of fresh air for the Pokémon franchise, and Game Freak has clearly learnt lessons from the semi-open-world Pokémon Legends: Arceus which released earlier this year.

[mm-video type=video id=01g7exp7mjpvtptx1ffp playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g7exp7mjpvtptx1ffp/01g7exp7mjpvtptx1ffp-5b078a321a9e58c5be93a48fffab4cf9.jpg]

It’s a recipe for success in many regards. Even many of the new Pokémon designs are fantastic. Lechonk, a tubby pig, sent social media into a frenzy after its announcement, and now Paldean Wooper and Fidough – yes, it’s a dog made of some kind of dough, it’s amazing – are also getting fans incredibly excited and protective. So why would Game Freak create such freakish legendaries for its game?

The two flagship legendary Pokémon are Koraidon for Pokémon Scarlet, and Miraidon for Pokémon Violet. Koraidon sports a dragon-like appearance with scales, while Miraidon almost looks like a futuristic robot. This supports some of the theories that the games are set in different time periods. On the surface they look fine, but things start to unravel when they’re in motion.

The first we see of this in the Pokémon Presents livestream on August 3 is Koraidon just sprouting wheels like a motorbike. Miraidon does the same thing immediately after. As the long-time Pokémon fan I profess to be, I have absolutely no problem with riding Pokémon — first gen’s Lapras is basically designed for that purpose specifically. But Lapras also looks like a creature that could exist in some fantastical land. This looks like a professional version of what my ten-year-old brain would draw as a Digimon concept. Which manages to be both a diss and a compliment at once.

Koraidon does, at least, run, with its legs, but that just makes the wheels more confusing. Miraidon’s back legs turn into damn jet engines. I have no explanation for this. But of course it gets a bit more absurd. Yes, these Pokémon can also swim with you on their backs, and even fly. Koraidon sprouts wings to take flight, and Miraidon basically turns into a flying motorcycle from Saints Row 3.

Admittedly, I have fewer issues with Koraidon. This creature is clearly organic, even if the huge motorcycle wheels are absurd – especially since this Pokémon doesn’t actually use them. It’s just a weird, and frankly offputting design choice. But Koraidon takes the cake. You know, I nodded along to “extra” Ultra Beast designs, and waved off a Pokémon that was a pair of haunted keys, or an ice cream, or a bloody chandelier, but is this just… a motorcycle? Admittedly gen one’s Blastoise had steely cannons burst forth from its shell, but a hard-shelled creature like that potentially growing water cannons? Absurd, but believable in the Pokémon world, especially after the Steel type was introduced.

But Miraidon? Was it created by humans? Is it an AI entity? Everything about it points towards it being some man-made mechanical creation, as opposed to a biological creature, but that’s not what a Pokémon is, or what the series is about. These are natural creatures that we seek to understand and cohabit with, and only evildoers or fools would attempt to pervert nature, such as with the origins of Mewtwo. But here we have Miraidon, and it’s just… ugh. It’s a robot, transformer, thing. It has jets. It’s also waterproof. If they really did steal notes from me as a ten-year-old, it’ll probably fire lasers, too.

Pokemon Presents livestream: Watch it here in your time zone

Watch the August 3 Pokémon Presents livestream right here so you can get the latest information as fast as possible.

We already know that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are launching later this year, but we’re still a bit hazy on the details. Will this game focus on multiplayer as a counterpoint to Legends: Arceus’ solo-focused story? And how will those new starters look once they’ve evovled? Not hideous, we hope.

All of these questions and more are still to be answered, and that’s exactly why we’re all so excited about August’s Pokémon Presents livestream. We can rest assured that we’ll see some brand new footage from Scarlet and Violet, but what other Pokémon games or products will be showcased is a mystery.

Pokémon is one of the largest and most profitable franchises in the world, and makes the Nintendo Switch an essential console for many fans. In this guide we’ll be running through where and when you can watch the Pokémon Presents livestream today, on August 3.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet leak reveals breeding details

Various long-time systems are allegedly changing for the latest installment.

We’re still a ways off from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet‘s release date, but the rumor mill is already kicking into high gear.

On Monday, Centro Leaks made several tweets claiming that Scarlet and Violet will not feature Pokémon breeding as in past titles (thanks, TheGamer). Instead, there’ll be some all-new mechanics for producing and hatching eggs. There allegedly will be no Day Cares or Nurseries in the game either. What could replace these reliable systems is anybody’s guess, and it’ll be interesting to see how series die-hards respond to any form of massive change. Hopefully, they’ll dig it after two decades of the same-old stuff.

[mm-video type=video id=01g7exp7mjpvtptx1ffp playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g7exp7mjpvtptx1ffp/01g7exp7mjpvtptx1ffp-5b078a321a9e58c5be93a48fffab4cf9.jpg]

Later in the same Twitter thread, Centro Leaks also revealed several other nuggets of information regarding Scarlet and Violet. Most notably, the leg counts for all starter evolution Pokémon. Sprigatto, the green cat everyone loves, will begin on all fours, then feature two evolutions that only stand on two legs. Meanwhile, Quaxly, that teal and white duck with the slick hairdo, stands on two legs for all three transformations. Lastly, Fuecoco, the weird-looking red and white reptile, is on two legs until its final evolution, where it’s a four-legged creature.

As with all leaks, don’t take all of this as gospel. We’ll find out if any of these details are accurate when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet releases this fall.

N64 Pokémon Snap releasing on Nintendo Switch next week

Switch Online subscribers get an old-school photography throwback soon.

Anyone that grew up with the Nintendo 64 undoubtedly remembers Pokémon Snap, and soon you can revisit this classic without digging out a two-decade-old console.

On Thursday, Nintendo announced that Pokémon Snap is coming to the Switch on June 24, 2022. It’s part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack program, so you’ll need an active subscription to play which costs $49.99 annually. Kind of a steep ask, but there are other titles like Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Banjo Kazooie, and Mario Golf on the service too.

Check out the Pokémon Snap re-release trailer for yourself below. It hits the nostalgia funny bone hard. Now, all we need is Hey You, Pikachu to round out the weird Pokémon spinoffs.

There was a sequel called New Pokémon Snap, which came out in 2021. Though it’s not held in quite the same regard as its prequel. Then again, a photography game of this nature isn’t quite as novel when Pokémon GO is essentially the same thing. Time sure do change and all that.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet announcement sparks Lechonk fever

It’s Lechonk’s world. We just live in it.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are set for release this November, and we just got a brand-new trailer that showed off its open-world and co-op questing.

But forget all that, we’re here for Lechonk, which is French for “the chonk”. Actually, “lechon” is Spanish for “suckling pig” – you know, the food. But don’t worry about facts – there’s a new Pokemon and it’s a chonky pig.

According to its official description, “it may appear fat at first glance, but in reality, the Pokemon’s body is mostly muscle built by constantly walking around in search of food.” He’s me. He’s me, for real.

Predictably, the internet has lost its collective mind.

Some Pokemon designs are outright stupid. Hell, there’s one that looks like a set of keys. This time, the developers nailed it. It’s just a round pig with a cute face and a funny name, the perfect fodder for farming likes on Twitter.

Here are some of the best Lechonk memes and tweets we’ve seen so far…

We’ll kick off with IGN giving little Lechonk the old golden ratio treatment. The eyes, the tongue, the ears – his whole face just screams “normal type”. He’s just a normal man. He’s an innocent man.

People are already considering founding the church of Lechonk, and who can blame them?

First Uri Gellar with Kadabra and now this. Poor Spud.

The speed the artists move at these days terrifies me. Imagine making art this perfect in the amount of time it takes me to wake up in the morning.

Oh my. Just… oh my.

This is funny, but honestly, who the hell cares about Wooloo anyway? Oh wow, you’re a weird sheep ball. Great. I’m happy for you. Grow up, Wooloo. Grow up.

I’ll never look at his nose the same way again.

It’s only a matter of time before the fancams. I can’t wait.

Anyway, that’s Lechonk. Now you know.

Cheers!

Pokémon Managing Director Junichi Masuda steps down

He’ll be taking up a new role as Chief Creative Fellow at The Pokémon Company.

As we rapidly approach Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’s release (and, later today, a new trailer), some news has popped out of The Pokémon Company this morning. Junichi Masuda, who has been working on the games since the original Japanese releases of Red & Green in 1996, is stepping down as Managing Director at developer Game Freak. He’ll be taking up a new role as Chief Creative Fellow at The Pokémon Company.

The major difference there is one has major oversight on the games, and the other is a little broader – indeed the announcement mentions development of “new services and products” as part of his new remit. For you and me, it does mean another person at the top of the food chain for Pokémon, but exactly what might change is up for debate. These games, despite a sometimes-enraged community, are made to a very successful formula.

Masuda was greatly influential in creating the original games, as well as most of the generations up until this point. As pointed out by Serebii’s Joe Merrick, Masuda was often blamed for decisions made on the games that were not solely his responsibility. He was not the game director for every title released, for example. His full credits can be found on Wikipedia.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet get a new trailer tomorrow morning

At 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern – so around 23 hours from now and counting – the Pokémon YouTube channel will have another trailer for the upcoming games, from which we’ve seen relatively little.

We’re at the announcement that a trailer is coming stage of the game release cycle, aren’t you excited? But hey, you do want to know, so Nintendo are going to oblige: there’s a new Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer on the way tomorrow.

At 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern – so around 23 hours from now and counting – the Pokémon YouTube channel will have another trailer for the upcoming games, from which we’ve seen relatively little. We know what the starters look like (the grass cat is the best, shut up toof-stans), and the general tone of the region, but that’s about it.

It’s also worth noting that in the previous trailer the game certainly looked a little rough. Whether that’s just the nature of the Switch, something the Pokémon company is doing wrong, or evidence of an early build is up for debate. However, that should be answered tomorrow, depending on how it looks.

The games are still due out this year, though who knows, maybe that’ll change tomorrow as well. See you back here.

Pokemon cards: rare and most expensive Pokemon TCG

Wondering how much your Pokemon cards are worth? Here are the ten most expensive Pokemon cards in circulation.

There’s one metric above all else when it comes to Pokemon cards: value. The Pokemon Trading Card Game might have been around for two decades, but it’s just as popular as ever. People still play it as a game, collectors still covet rare Pokemon cards, and some go for a ridiculous price at auction.

If you’ve been rummaging around in your closet and you’ve found a rare Pokemon card, you’re probably looking to find out if it’s going to make you rich. While the answer to that question is likely “no”, there’s no harm in checking if you have one of the most expensive Pokemon cards in existence, is there?

There are two main factors that make Pokemon cards increase in value: rarity and condition. If your card is rare and pristine, it’s probably worth some money. You’re a step closer to Logan Paul turning up at your house with $3.5 million. Tasty.

[mm-video type=video id=01fwrq8h9v8ftrr8918h playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fwrq8h9v8ftrr8918h/01fwrq8h9v8ftrr8918h-8272e15b471d0737332a6a62a27f3e66.jpg]

With it being a market, these prices are always estimates, based on historic auction sales and other factors, so the values listed here aren’t ironclad. However, they should give you a good idea about just how much your Pokemon cards are worth. Let’s take a look at some of the most valuable Pokemon cards around.
