Cameron Heyward calls Man of the Year award ‘the greatest honor of my life’

Cameron Heyward finally won Walter Payton Man of the Year after six nominations.

After six nominations, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward finally won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award this year. This was his third straight year as a finalist.

Heyward sent out the tweet below noting that he considered the award the greatest honor of his life. Heyward was given then the award during the NFL Honors, and an official presentation was done at the Super Bowl.

Heyward does a tremendous number of good works through The Heyward House, his organization. Here is a great description of what they do from their official site:

The passion that Cam shows on the field doesn’t stop when his uniform comes off. It is actually the other way around – Cameron carries the passion he feels about life onto the field with him.
At the core of Cam’s heart are kids – whether it’s visiting with children who have serious medical conditions, taking kids shopping for winter clothes, or sending birthday presents and cards to kids who rarely get celebrated. He knows that every kid needs to have one person who is in their corner, rooting for them at all times.

Grading the Steelers offensive positional units through 5 games

We hand out grades for the Steelers offense and the news isn’t good.

Now that we’ve had a few days to go back through the Pittsburgh Steelers first five games, we are prepared to give out some grades for each of the positional units. First up is the offense and spoiler alert: These aren’t the grades you would want your child coming home from school with.

Top 5 potential replacements for Steelers HC Mike Tomlin

If the Steelers move on from Tomlin, the team will have options.

Earlier in the week, I offered up the idea that the Pittsburgh Steelers need to really clean house this offseason as far as the coaching staff goes. I also gave the one caveat that I don’t include head coach Mike Tomlin among those coaches that need to go. This prompted some interesting conversation from the “fire Tomlin” crowd so we will humor you all with five guys who could be potential replacements for Tomlin if the team lets him go.

Stat projections for Steelers QB Kenny Pickett in 2022

Kenny Pickett might be the answer at quarterback but is it this season?

It is starting to look like none of the 2022 quarterabck class is going to be in the starting lineup on Week One. The entire draft was something of a confusing mess as quarterbacks continued to tumble after the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted former Pitt star Kenny Pickett.

But what should we expect from Pickett this year, statitically? Since we have no idea when or if Pickett will get into the starting lineup, we will offer up three scenarios. First, a prediction if he’s the fulltime starter, second if he starts the second half of the year and finally if he’s only a situational player.

Report: NFL looking at radical new policy to encourage minority hires

The NFL is pushing hard to get more minorities in top positions.

[jwplayer xt77HzlS-ThvAeFxT]

According to a report by NFL reporter Jim Trotter, the NFL is looking at a resolution that would radically change the hiring practices by the entire league.

The resolution would reward teams that hire minority coaches and executives with an improved draft position. Then they would see additional improvement in later drafts by keeping those hires on staff for a set number of years.

Here are the parameters of the resolution according to the article:

  • If a team hires a minority head coach, that team, in the draft preceding the coach’s second season, would move up six spots from where it is slotted to pick in the third round. A team would jump 10 spots under the same scenario for hiring a person of color as its primary football executive, a position more commonly known as general manager.
  • If a team were to fill both positions with diverse candidates in the same year, that club could jump 16 spots — six for the coach, 10 for the GM — and potentially move from the top of the third round to the middle of the second round. Another incentive: a team’s fourth-round pick would climb five spots in the draft preceding the coach’s or GM’s third year if he is still with the team. That is considered significant because Steve Wilks and Vance Joseph, two of the four African-American head coaches hired since 2017, were fired after one and two seasons, respectively.

It isn’t the time or place to discuss the potential pitfalls of a rule like this. There will be plenty of time to discuss the pros and cons of this, should it pass.

2020 NFL salary cap set at $198.2 million

The 2020 NFL salary cap saw a very modest increase.

News is coming in fast after the passing of the new collective bargaining agreement. According to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, the salary cap for 2020 is set at $198.2 million.

This would represent a $10 million increase over 2019. But it would also represent only a 5.3 percent bump, the smallest since 2013. Nevertheless, this increase will help teams who are strapped for cash like the Pittsburgh Steelers get their offseason plans underway.
