Analyzing Thursday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (0-1-0) take on the Detroit Red Wings (0-0-0) Thursday. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Penguins vs. Red Wings odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: First meeting; Pens won 2-1 last year

The Pens had their igloos ransacked by the New York Rangers in a 6-0 defeat Wednesday night. They will have to regroup on the back end of a back-to-back on the road against the Wings in their season and home opener. G Tristan Jarry did all he could, stopping 35 of 41 shots in the barrage. C Sidney Crosby played 20:59 and had 2 SOG.

The Wings open their season Thursday night after a promising offseason. They brought in quality veterans in RW Vladimir Tarasenko and G Cam Talbot to shore up their solid depth. They also re-signed RW Patrick Kane and locked up cornerstone D Moritz Seider to a 7-year deal. The Wings are primed for a chance to end their 8-year playoff drought.

Penguins at Red Wings projected goalies

Joel Blomqvist (25-12-6, 2.16 GAA, .921 SV% in ’23-24 with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in AHL) vs. Ville Husso (9-5-2, 3.55 GAA, .892 SV% in ’23-24).

The 22-year-old former 2nd-round pick is slated for his NHL debut Thursday. He gave up 2 goals in 5:05 in his last preseason start Friday but settled in, stopping 26 of 29 overall.

The 29-year-old Husso was limited to 19 games last season due to injury, which has been his calling card back to his days in the minors. He did face the Pens in a 6-3 victory last year, though, stopping 30 of 33 in the process.

Penguins at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 5, Penguins 2

Moneyline

In last year’s home opener, the Wings roared out to a 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. I look for that kind of intensity Thursday, whether the Pens bring back Jarry on consecutive nights or go with the rookie.

Take the RED WINGS -140.

Puck line/Against the spread

It’s not a great strategy overall, but it makes sense here. I’m going with RED WINGS -1.5 (+170) for a HALF-UNIT. Detroit has won 2 of the last 3 matchups at home vs. Pittsburgh, and both of those wins were by 3 goals.

Over/Under

The Over is the way to go here. Pittsburgh gave up 6 goals at home Wednesday night, traveled to Detroit and has to face a team with momentum from the offseason. All 3 matchups had 7+ goals and went Over last year.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-120).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (2-1-0) and Detroit Red Wings (2-1-0) face off Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Pens have been chillin’ since winning back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. They took down the Calgary Flames at home, 5-2, Saturday. RW Bryan Rust had 2 goals in the game, and he has 3 in as many games this year. Before that, the Pens shut out the Washington Capitals 4-0.

The Red Wings are flying high after a 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Monday night. C Dylan Larkin picked up his 1st goal and point of the season, and G James Reimer stopped all 23 shots fired his way. Their other win was a 6-4 home win against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Penguins -1.5 (+185) | Red Wings +1.5 (-225)

Penguins at Red Wings projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (1-1-0, 1.53 GAA, .944 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Ville Husso (1-1-0, 3.56 GAA, .863 SV%)

Jarry’s last performance was a 19-save shutout against the Washington Capitals Friday night. He beat Detroit in his only matchup against them last year, stopping 19 of the 20 shots he faced. He’s 3-0-0 with a 1.34 GAA and .953 SV% against them lifetime.

Husso has been a little leaky to begin the season, allowing 7 goals on 51 shots in his 2 starts. He saw the Pens twice last season, and he allowed 9 goals on 40 shots. He’s 0-1-1 with a 4.58 GAA and .871 SV% in 3 career games against the Pens.

Penguins at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The Penguins are 7-1-2 in the last 10 games against Detroit. The last meeting was a Penguins 5-1 victory in Detroit last April. The Pens have the hotter goalie, and they’re the better team on paper. According to Pregame.com, 52% of the tickets are on Pittsburgh, but 61% of the cash is as well. It has caused their ML to shift a little Wednesday morning. Let’s roll with PENGUINS -125.

Puck line/Against the spread

Detroit is 3-0 on the puck line this year, but even if we wanted to bite, the -225 is far too sour of an apple. Instead, I want to spotlight Rust, who scored 2 goals last game and is feelin’ it. He’s at plus-odds to take 3 shots on goal, and he has done so in 2 of the 3 games thus far. Take BRYAN RUST OVER 2.5 SHOTS ON GOAL (+105).

Over/Under

The Over is 5-4-1 in the last 10 meetings, but it’s 4-1 in the last 5. My concern is Detroit scoring enough to tip the scales into the Over. Six of the last 10 games against Pittsburgh, they have scored 2 goals or fewer. With an Over 6.5, that means Pittsburgh may have to score 5+, and that’s a tall ask.

LEAN UNDER 6.5 (+105).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with expert NHL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (39-30-10) visit the Detroit Red Wings (35-33-10) Saturday. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Time is running out on the Penguins, as they make a final push for an Eastern Conference Wild Card. Pittsburgh has 88 points, 1 point back of the Florida Panthers and New York Islanders in the chase, and all 3 teams have 3 games remaining. It is just 16-18-5 on the road this season and has dropped 3 straight away from home.

The Red Wings have won 4 wins in the past 6 games, but despite the hot streak Detroit was eliminated from the playoff hunt this past week.

Detroit won both meetings with Pittsburgh so far this season, picking up a 5-4 overtime victory as the Over (6) cashed on Dec. 28 and a 7-4 triumph as a +159 underdog with an Over (6.5) result on March 28.

Penguins at Red Wings projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (23-12-6, 2.94 GAA, .909 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Ville Husso (26-19-7, 3.01 GAA, .899 SV%, 4 SO)

Jarry turned aside 27 of the 28 shots he faced against the Minnesota Wild Thursday, snapping a 2-game losing streak to start the month. This will be his 1st start of the season against the Red Wings as G Casey DeSmith faced Detroit in both previous contests.

Husso is confirmed for Saturday’s start. He is looking to rebound after coughing up 6 goals on 36 shots in a 7-6 shootout loss against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. He has won just once in the past 5 starts, allowing 5 or more goals in 3 of the previous 4 outings.

Husso started in Pittsburgh on Dec. 28, conceding 4 goals on 12 shots before he was pulled.

Penguins at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The PENGUINS (-175) are a little on the expensive side but are worth playing in this do-or-die matchup.

Pittsburgh is risky, as it has won just once in the past 7 games on the road and is 2-7 in its last 9 against Eastern Conference foes. However, the Penguins need these 2 points if they want to make the postseason.

Puck line/Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+140) are worth a look on the road on the puck line so go lightly. Pittsburgh may have cashed on the puck line against the Philadelphia Flyers last time it was favored but is just 7-11 in the past 18 games on the puck line when favored.

However, the thinking is that the Red Wings will fall flat after being freshly eliminated from the postseason chase.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (+100) is worth playing in this matinee battle.

The Under has cashed in 4 of the past 5 games overall for the Pens and is 5-2 in their past 7 road games, according to covers.com.

The Under is 8-1 for the Wings against Metropolitan Division clubs while going 16-7 in their past 23 games against Eastern Conference foes.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (36-27-10) travel to meet the Detroit Red Wings (31-32-9) Tuesday. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Penguins picked up a 4-3 win on home ice Saturday against the Washington Capitals as the Over cashed. After a 4-game skid, including 3 games in a row from March 16-20 with 3 total goals, the Pens are averaging 3.7 goals per game (GPG) across the last 3 outings.

The Red Wings were blanked 3-0 by Carter Hart and the Philadelphia Flyers on the road Saturday. Detroit has managed a 1-5 mark in the last 6 games, slipping under .500 overall on the season. The Red Wings are averaging just 1.7 GPG across the last 6 outings.

Penguins at Red Wings projected goalies

Tristan Jarry (21-10-6, 2.98 GAA, .908 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (2-6-2, 3.83 GAA, .882 SV%)

Jarry was sharp last time out at Colorado, turning aside 28 of the 30 shots he faced in a 5-2 win last Wednesday against the Avalanche. He is still just 3-3-1 with a 4.04 GAA and .861 SV% in 9 starts in the month of March.

Nedeljkovic is confirmed to start, as Ville Husso (lower body) is sidelined. Ned came on in place of the struggling Magnus Hellberg against St. Louis Thursday, and he was sharp in a 3-0 loss in Philadelphia. Nedeljkovic allowed just 2 goals on 21 shots, but he obviously received no offensive support.

Penguins at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 5, Red Wings 3

Moneyline

The Penguins (-180) are right at my personal limit for a singular moneyline play. However, I don’t really like the Pens as the road favorite, even against a shaky Red Wings (+160) side. There is just too much risk, and not enough reward, especially since Jarry has been so shaky lately.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+140) are a much better value at plus-money laying the goal and a half.

Pittsburgh has failed to cover in 4 straight on the puck line as a favorite, so be careful and go lightly. But this is the much better value, especially on the road.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (+102) is a solid value at plus-money.

Jarry has been very giving lately, and Nedeljkovic has coughed up a lot of goals in his 2 stints in the NHL this season. This could be a high-scoring affair at LCA.

The Pens are rested, and the Over is 4-1 in the last 5 when playing on 2 days of rest. In addition, the Over is 5-0-1 in the last 6 home games for the Wings.

The Over is also 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings in this series, including a 5-4 OT win by the Wings in Pittsburgh in the 1st meeting on Dec. 28.
