With Davis Love III’s granddaughter’s approval, RSM Classic merch tent has toasty offerings

When Davis Love III says the RSM Classic is a family affair, he isn’t just providing lip service.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — When Davis Love III says the RSM Classic is a family affair, he isn’t just providing lip service.

As part of the pre-tournament press conferences, Love brought his granddaughter Eloise to the podium, and she explained how a hat she picked up at the tournament’s merchandise shop last year was so popular that she was offered money for it.

“Somebody asked me if they could buy it from me and I said yes, because why not?” she said. “I don’t know who it was, I kind of forgot, but somebody did and my mom got really mad at me.”

Davis Love elaborated.

“She kept getting asked and we said, well, why don’t you just sell it right off your head to the highest bidder? She came running in the next day, ‘$106!'”

Hats are some of the more popular items at the Sea Island Golf Club merch tent, some for fashion’s sake and some for practicality. Chilly temps on Thursday morning made knit hats something of a priority.

Also among the offerings are some baseball caps donning the number 15, which is how many years the tournament has been played.

And it’s possible you’ll see Eloise working in the stand if you drop by on the weekend.

“It’s good. We’re having a lot of sales. It’s very fun to work there,” she said.

Here’s a look at the merch tent’s offerings:

Hall of Famer Mark O’Meara announces retirement from professional golf. See his career in photos

What a career.

Mark O’Meara is calling it a career and he’s doing it where he enjoyed some of his finest moments.

The 2015 Golf Hall of Fame inductee announced Monday on Golf Channel he was retiring after this week’s Pure Insurance Championship on the PGA Tour Champions at Pebble Beach Golf Links. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am five times.

O’Meara is a 16-time PGA Tour winner and two-time major champion, winning the Masters and Open Championship in 1998 as his final PGA Tour victories. He played in 674 events on the PGA Tour, making the cut 444 times and amassing more than $14 million in career earnings.

This week will mark O’Meara’s 284th start on PGA Tour Champions, where he has three victories, his last coming in 2019. He has one senior major, the 2010 Senior Players Championship.

O’Meara was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and took up golf at 13 years old when he lived in Mission Viejo, California. He was an All-American at Long Beach State and won the U.S. Amateur in 1979.

His first PGA Tour victory came in 1984 at the Greater Milwaukee Open. Then in 1998, he finally got his first major, capturing the green jacket at Augusta National in the Masters. Later that year, he added the Claret Jug to his trophy case, winning at Royal Birkdale. He’s one of 16 golfers to claim two majors in one season with the Open being one of them.

He announced on the Friday of the 2018 Masters after missing the cut that it was his last Masters, 20 years after he won his green jacket.

He reached a high of No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking in that 1998 season. For his career, he totaled 34 professional victories. He won five European Tour events, two on the Japan Golf Tour and numerous others.

A first look at the standalone field where Wisconsin will play Northwestern on Oct. 19

Seriously, there is going to be major college football played on this field…

Wisconsin will travel to play the Northwestern Wildcats in Week 8 of the college football season.

The Badgers and Wildcats have faced off in every season since 2013. Wisconsin has made five trips to Evanston, Illinois, in that time.

A road trip to play Northwestern used to mean a game at Ryan Field — a field known for abnormally long grass in a high school-like stadium atmosphere. That is no longer the case. Northwestern recently demolished Ryan Field and is in the process of building a new state-of-the-art facility.

The construction will not be completed until the 2026 season. In the meantime, the Wildcats are building a temporary solution.

Wisconsin will play in that temporary stadium when it travels to Northwestern on Oct. 19, 2024. Early reports pointed to Lambeau Field as a possible location. Those reports did not come to fruition. That led to the much-anticipated release of the actual location of the Badgers’ game against the Wildcats this season.

Turns out it is a remote turf field on the shore of Lake Michigan. That’s about it.

To be clear, this is just the location of the field. Northwestern is expected to put together a minor build-out that includes an area for the media and limited seating for season-ticket holders.

But the temporary stadium should take Northwestern’s atmosphere, or lack thereof, to the next level.

The Badgers will make the trip in mid-October looking to avenge a 24-10 loss to the Wildcats in 2023. Wisconsin is expect to improve upon a shaky 7-6 record from a season ago, while Northwestern will likely take a step backward after a surprising 8-5 2023 campaign.
