Philip Rivers will officially enter free agency

The Los Angeles Chargers and franchise quarterback Philip Rivers have officially agreed to part ways, meaning Rivers will be a free agent.

The Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers have officially agreed to part ways after Rivers’ 16-year run with the organization that traded Eli Manning to the Giants on draft day in 2004 for the rights to him.

While the news doesn’t come as much of a shock since many people have been speculating that a separation was in the cards for both parties, the team made it official yesterday.

Given that Rivers has moved his entire family out of San Diego and down to Florida, many have speculated that he could join any one of the Florida franchises, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Even Bill Barnwell of ESPN has envisioned a scenario where Rivers joins Bruce Arians for one final run before they both ride off into the sunset.

And, until we know for sure what the Bucs decide to do with Winston, the Rivers to the Bucs rumors will only continue to gain momentum.

PTI’s Tony Kornheiser thinks Bruce Arians would prefer Rivers over Winston

Would Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians actually prefer Philip Rivers under center in 2020 over Jameis Winston?

The Los Angeles Chargers earlier this week announced that they would be “moving on” from franchise quarterback Philip Rivers.

What this means for the 38-year-old quarterback’s future remains to be seen, but given the fact that Rivers has moved his family to Florida, speculation has already begun that he could wind up finding employment with any of the Sunshine State’s three NFL teams, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In fact, Tony Kornheiser of ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” said on Tuesday’s show that Rivers might be the Bucs’ preferred choice:

“All the teams in Florida need a quarterback, every one of the teams. And Bruce Arians — he’ll go with Philip Rivers because he’s seen him for a lot of years. He doesn’t want a quarterback that’s going to throw 30 picks, although Philip Rivers throws a lot.”

Rivers actually threw 20 interceptions, third most in the league behind only Jameis Winston (30) and Baker Mayfield (21). In fact, Rivers has thrown 20 or more interceptions three times over the course of his career.

As much as Rivers’ playoff experience would be valued in that Bucs locker room, I’d actually place more trust in Winston than Rivers going into 2020. Several quarterbacks have come out saying that now that Winston has a year of playing for Arians under his belt, we’ll start to see some big results.

Until the Bucs make an official decision on Winston, however, the speculation about Rivers to the Bucs will continue.
