Which Eagles’ defender ‘wrecked’ the Commanders in Week 11?

Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury shows respect to this Eagles’ defender.

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury met with the media on Thursday to preview this Sunday’s rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The two NFC East rivals met just five weeks ago, with the Eagles coming away with a 26-18 victory. The Commanders actually led this game heading into the fourth quarter. But Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley took over in the fourth quarter, rushing for two touchdowns and finishing with 198 yards of total offense.

In the first meeting, the Commanders, a top-five NFL offense all season, managed only 264 total yards against the top-ranked Philly defense. Kingsbury singled out one player from the Week 11 meeting who “wrecked” the Commanders.

“It starts, I think, with coach [Eagles DC Vic] Fangio, they’re very well coached,” Kingsbury said. “They don’t give up anything easy. You gotta defeat them, not a lot of big plays. And then creating havoc up front, 98 [Philadelphia Eagles DT Jalen Carter] is as good a player as there is in the NFL right now. He wrecked us the first game, and they have some really good rushers.”

Philadelphia has several talented defenders at every level of the defense. But Carter is unique. Carter, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, was widely considered the best player in his class, but an off-field incident dropped him, and the Eagles happily pounced.

Carter has 4.5 sacks this season, but his dominance doesn’t always appear on the stat sheet. His impact does, though, as Philly’s defense is ranked No. 1 in scoring defense, pass defense and total defense. The Eagles are ranked seventh against the run.

Kingsbury explained why the Eagles are so difficult to run against.

“The two guys inside there have done a great job of even if they empty the box out, really making the run game difficult,” he said. “Not many people have been able to establish it. Baltimore is one of the best teams and running the football and it was kind of tough sledding for them.”

Washington’s offensive line struggled with Philadelphia’s defensive line, specifically the interior five weeks ago. Kingsbury must have an answer for that front or it could be another long day for the Commanders on offense.

When they last met: Commanders and Eagles

What happened last time the Commanders and Eagles played?

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

Philadelphia 26, Washington 18 – Week 11, November 14, 2024

The Commanders surrendered scores on the Eagles’ last five offensive possessions as the Eagles defeated the Commanders 26-18 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Washington entered the final quarter up 10-6 but was thoroughly outplayed in the final 15 minutes. The Eagles scored 20 consecutive points to take a 26-10 lead, which they held until Washington scored on their last possession, making the final margin 26-18.

Beginning with the Eagles’ final possession of the first half, the Eagles drove 87, 74, 76, 74, and 46 yards in five consecutive possessions, controlling both the ball and the clock and keeping the Washington defense on the field.

Saquon Barkley had fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 23 and 39 yards on his way to 146 rushing yards in 26 carries. A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert led the Eagles with five receptions for 65 and 61 yards, respectively.

Washington’s Jayden Daniels struggled, being sacked three times and intercepted once. He completed 22 of 32 passes for 191 yards, compiling a passing rating of only 81.6. Brian Robinson led the rushing attack with 63 yards on 16 carries, while Austin Ekeler collected eight receptions for 89 yards. But Ekeler will not be available for this return game in Washington on Sunday.

Third down was a huge factor in this game. The Eagles converted 9 of 16 third downs, while the Commanders converted only 3 of 12.

One other factor of note: Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin only connected once all game, and that was for only 10 yards.

Prediction and betting odds for Commanders vs. Eagles in Week 16

Analyzing Commanders vs. Eagles game with odds and lines, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Commanders (9-5) host the Philadelphia Eagles (12-2) in Week 16 action from Northwest Stadium. The Commanders look to avenge a 26-18 loss to the Eagles in Week 11 — a game they led for three quarters.

The Commanders enter Sunday as the NFC’s No. 7 playoff seed, while the Eagles are the second seed but have the same record as top-seeded Detroit.

Below are the latest odds and our final score prediction for Sunday.

Commanders vs. Eagles game odds:

All NFL Odds via BetMGM:

  • Point spread: Commanders +3.5 (-110) / Eagles -3.5 (-110)
  • Money line: Commanders +155 / Eagles -190
  • Over-under: 45.5 (O: -110 / U: -110)

Commanders vs. Eagles injury updates:

  • Commanders TE Zach Ertz: Questionable (concussion)
  • Commanders S Jeremy Chinn: Questionable (concussion)

  • Eagles EDGE Bryce Huff: Out (wrist)
  • Eagles S Sydney Brown: Questionable (concussion)
  • Eagles WR Britain Covey: Out (neck)

Commanders vs. Eagles prediction, pick:

Bryan Manning:

Washington isn’t as hot offensively as it was heading into the first meeting. Now, the Commanders are without Austin Ekeler and Noah Brown. It looks like Zach Ertz will play, which is terrific news for Washington. I believe Washington’s defense plays well for most of the game, and the offense is better this time around. However, the Eagles are healthier and the better team. Washington is gaining ground, though. Saquon Barkley again proves to be the difference.

Pick: Eagles, 27, Commanders 23

Ivan Lambert:

The Commanders are averaging 28.3 points a game this season. However, the Eagles’ defensive front seven restricted the Commanders’ offense, holding them to 10 points until that final possession drive against the Eagles prevent defense.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are the No. 1 rushing team in the NFL at 186 yards a game.

On defense, the Eagles are also No. 1 in scoring defense, surrendering only 17.6 points a game.

The Commanders have yet to beat a team with a winning record this season; they are 0-4 against those teams. I honestly think this game could be closer, but can the Commanders produce enough in the passing game with Noah Brown injured and possibly Zach Ertz out as well?

Pick: Eagles 24, Commanders 17

Serena Burks:

The Commanders face a tall task on Sunday against the Eagles. Washington has struggled of late, even after the bye. Both teams are primarily healthy, but the Eagles have one thing the Commanders don’t: Saquon Barkley. It’s not just about his natural talent or ability; it’s about his sheer will to win.

Pick: Eagles 24, Commanders 21

NFL reveals officiating mistake with fines for Steelers-Eagles fight

The NFL’s fines after the Steelers-Eagles fight expose officiating errors from Week 15’s heated altercation.

It appears the NFL is attempting to right the wrong from the terrible officiating on the penalty resulting from the Week 15 skirmish between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The fight in question saw Steelers TE Darnell Washington take his blocking assignment a little too far, Eagles CBs Darius Slay Jr. and Quinyon Mitchell throw haymakers, and Steelers WR Calvin Austin III defend his teammate. However, the NFL initially only penalized the Black and Gold, claiming they had not seen any punches thrown by Philadelphia. Footage emerged following the game, clearly showing Slay punching Washington.

Almost a week later, the NFL has seemingly realized its mistake while handing out fines. While Austin and Washington were also fined—$6,173 and $6,760 respectively—it is nowhere close to the amount Mitchell and Slay are being charged, with both fined $14,069 each for their involvement.

Did the NFL do enough to correct the awful call from the Steelers-Eagles game? One could argue they did, but it’s a mistake that may have contributed to the Black and Gold’s loss.

Is DeShon Elliot the real MVP of Steelers defense?

DeShon Elliot’s absence highlights his immense impact on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense during their tough late-season stretch.

Much to the dismay of Steelers fans, the team’s Week 15 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles brought their Super Bowl aspirations crashing back down to Earth. Coupled with an extremely difficult final three weeks to close out the 2024 season, the negativity in the air is palpable.

However, analyzing what went wrong during these trying times has brought about a newfound appreciation for perhaps the best player on the Pittsburgh Steelers defense in 2024: SS DeShon Elliot.

PFF, while known for their less-than-remarkable grades for the Black and Gold, recognizes Elliot as the second-best run-stopping safety in the 2024 season.

Elliot missed the team’s Week 15 contest and is scheduled to miss the Week 16 contest against the Baltimore Ravens as well. His ability to stop the run, drop back into coverage, rush the passer, consistently make great tackles, and lead the secondary were all aspects sorely missed in the team’s loss to the Eagles. Without Elliot, the defense failed to stop the Philadelphia Eagles offense from taking over the second half in Week 15.

Could the absence of Elliot in Week 16 lead to consecutive losses for the Black and Gold, further solidifying his position as the MVP of the Steelers defense?

Eagles vs. Commanders injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 16

Eagles players Bryce Huff (wrist; IR) and Britain Covey (neck) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders

The Eagles released their final Week 16 injury report, and A.J. Brown was a full participant and had no injury designation ahead of Sunday’s game against the Commanders.

Bryce Huff (wrist/IR) and Britain Covey (neck) were ruled out.

Brown (concussion) is questionable. A.J. Brown (knee) and Landon Dickerson (knee) were limited in practice today, but they are good for Sunday.

Jordan Brand to pay Jalen Hurts $6K fine for wearing cleats that weren’t Eagles team colors

Jordan Brand to pay Jalen Hurts $6K fine from NFL for mismatch cleats

The Eagles have a Kelly Green and Midnight Green look, but Jalen Hurts violated an NFL rule by debuting two cleats in the 27-13 win over the Steelers.

Last Sunday, Hurts decided to wear mismatch cleats, and the league fined Philadelphia’s star quarterback close to $6,000.

As Nick DePaula reports, Hurts won’t be paying that fine. Jordan Brand will ensure their star quarterback keeps his money, similar to a move they made with Michael Jordan 40 years ago.

Earlier in the season, Hurts turned heads when he was forced to wear one white Jordan and another Green Jordan cleat after having his foot stepped on and not wanting to miss a play.

A.J. Brown Injury updates: Eagles WR says he’s playing vs. Commanders in Week 16

A.J. Brown may be dealing with a knee injury, but the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver says he’ll play against the Washington Commanders

The Eagles are set for a critical NFC East matchup with the Washington Commanders, and A.J. Brown wouldn’t miss this for anything.

Brown appeared on the injury report following Thursday’s practice with a knee/rest designation.   Asked if Brown suffered an injury during that session, Nick Sirianni referred to his star wide receiver as limited ahead of Friday’s session.

Asked if Brown will play, Sirianni stated, “we’ll see.”

Brown appeared to avoid a serious injury late in Philadelphia’s win over Pittsburgh when James Pierre got away with a hip-drop tackle after the Eagles star secured a late fourth-quarter catch.

Brown met with the media after the Eagles’ Friday practice and clarified that he would play on Sunday.

Brown has 56 catches (tied for 35th in the NFL), 946 yards (11th in the NFL), five touchdowns, and a 16.9 yards per catch average.

Philadelphia can clinch the NFC East with a win on Sunday, while Washington wants to maintain their No. 7 seed.

Commanders rule out star defensive tackle for critical game vs. Eagles

Commanders rule out star defensive tackle Jonathan Allen for critical game vs. the Eagles

The Commanders opened defensive tackle Jonathan Allen’s 21-day window to return to the roster on Wednesday, but he won’t be active for Sunday’s critical game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The two-time Pro Bowler was allowed to practice for the first time since suffering a pectoral injury in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens, but Washington will hold him out at least one more week.

Allen, who underwent surgery to repair his partially torn pec, was initially thought to be lost for the season. However, now, he can appear in one of Washington’s remaining three regular-season games or possibly a playoff game.

The Commanders currently hold the No. 7 seed in the playoffs but need to hold off other teams like the Atlanta Falcons, who are also vying for that spot. Two of their next three opponents — the Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles — are in the top 12 of rushing yards per game, while the Commanders have allowed 132 yards per game on the ground.

Will A.J. Brown play in Week 16? Injury updates for Eagles WR

A.J. Brown may be dealing with a knee injury. Here are the latest updates on the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver

The Eagles are set for a critical NFC East matchup with the Washington Commanders, and A.J. Brown could be a player to watch over the next 48 hours.

Even with Brown’s injury/rest day, Everyone on the active roster was on the Eagles’ practice field on Thursday. Second-year safety Sydney Brown, who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win over the Steelers, returned to practice.

Brown has 56 catches (tied for 35th in the NFL), 946 yards (11th in the NFL), five touchdowns, and a 16.9 yards per catch average.

If Brown can’t play, Johnny Wilson or Jahan Dotson would get the start, unlike DeVonta Smith.
