The New England Patriots welcome the Philadelphia Eagles to Gillette Stadium for Week 2 of the preseason Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET (NFL Network). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Eagles vs. Patriots odds, and make our expert NFL picks and predictions.

The Patriots, who selected QB Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, beat the Carolina Panthers 17-3 in their preseason opener Aug. 8. QB Bailey Zappe, who appeared in 10 games last season, had a team-high 108 passing yards on 12-of-20 passing. New England allowed just 124 passing yards but also played virtually no Panthers starters. It should see a bit more competitive action in Week 2.

The Eagles took down the Baltimore Ravens 16-13 in Week 1. QB Kenny Pickett, who was the starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, went 14 for 22 and ended with 89 passing yards and a touchdown. The Eagles also had a stout defense, allowing a total of just 99 passing yards to Baltimore’s backup quarterbacks. Philadelphia 1st-round pick CB Quinyon Mitchell played some, but didn’t record a tackle.

Eagles at Patriots picks and predictions

Prediction

Patriots 17, Eagles 13

Moneyline

BET PATRIOTS (-140).

Unlike the Ravens when they played the Eagles, the Patriots have a slew of quality backup quarterbacks.

Even if Maye, who did look relatively competent in his drive, doesn’t play much, an experienced Zappe can step in. The Patriots also have QB Joe Milton III, who threw their only passing touchdown and was 4 for 6. They had 3 players go north of 20 rushing yards.

The Eagles had 5 players rush for north of 20 yards, but the passing game wasn’t very impressive, as Pickett and QB Tanner McKee each threw for 89 yards or fewer. They’re going to need more dynamic performances on offense to win 2 straight preseason road games, and Pickett hasn’t proven to be that competent of a playmaker yet in his career.

Take Zappe over Pickett, and back PATRIOTS (-140).

Against the spread

PASS.

Many preseason games have been close, field-goal games, and considering the Eagles won by 3 on the road against the Ravens in Week 1, the preferred play is the home side’s moneyline, not a riskier spread.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 35.5 (-105).

Neither team produced much offensively in Week 1, and there’s no real reason to expect the starters to play multiple drives in this game. The Eagles put up 16 points with under 120 passing yards in their preseason opener.

The Patriots ended with 274 total yards but were just 5 for 15 on 3rd down. They scored just 17 points in their preseason-opening battle. Expect another sloppy offensive game, and take UNDER 35.5 (-105).
