New Buffs WR coach Phil McGeoghan promoted to assistant head coach

On Friday, Karl Dorrell promoted Phil McGeoghan to assistant head coach

The Colorado Buffaloes football staff looks much different than it did a few months ago.

Not only did they bring in Mike Sanford as the team’s new offensive coordinator, but they made a splashy NFL-type hire by naming Phil McGeoghan as the team’s wide receivers coach, among other moves.

The hire has paid off already with the Buffs gaining a few talented prospects for the class of 2023.

Well, McGeoghan just got added another title. On Friday, Karl Dorrell promoted McGeoghan to become his assistant head coach, a huge honor for the veteran coach who is set to go through his first season in Boulder.

In a press release, McGeoghan expressed his gratitude to the Buffs and the staff after receiving the new title:

“I am so grateful to Coach Dorrell and the entire CU family for this opportunity. Having the ability to be a direct extension of the core values, leadership and vision of this prestigious university is a true blessing.  And the privilege of developing, cultivating and sustaining meaningful relationships with all the players on this roster is the most inspiring part of this journey.”

McGeoghan has spent time in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers. He has also made college stops in Maine, South Florida and East Carolina, so McGeoghan is a well-traveled man for the college ranks.

Having a big-ticket name like McGeoghan in the recruiting room is a huge bonus for the Buffs and let’s see if it helps them on the field as well.

Phil McGeoghan fires shot at NIL while showing his own worth

What are your thoughts on Phil McGeoghan’s NIL tweet?

New Colorado Buffaloes wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan has an impressive resume that includes working with a number of talented NFL stars.

His presence in Boulder has resulted in some aggressive recruiting and more high-profile prospects should consider playing for McGeoghan.

With all of the NIL buzz lately regarding college sports (football specifically), the Buffs’ new WR coach took to Twitter and expressed his displeasure with the recent movement in the game.

In turn, he also sent out a long list of players he has worked with and showed how much they have made during their careers.

McGeoghan has a point. Sure, NIL money is good for the moment and the present time. However, McGeoghan is showing that he has helped develop a number of stars, and a lot of them have enjoyed successful careers at the next level.

New Buffs offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was watching this unfold and provided an epic emoji tweet in support of McGeoghan’s message.

The NIL craze has taken over college sports quickly, which isn’t all that surprising. However, as McGeoghan mentions, why not go somewhere where you can develop your skills and play the game for a long time at the next level?

New Buffs WR coach Phil McGeoghan preaches aggressive approach to recruiting

New Buffs WR coach Phil McGeoghan has already been an aggressive recruiter

National Signing Day came and went for college football.

On Wednesday, Karl Dorrell and his new assistant coaches discussed the Buffs’ future after a whirlwind of offseason roster shakeups. One of those assistants that spoke was Phil McGeoghan, CU’s new wide receivers coach.

McGeoghan, who has a ton of experience at the NFL level, spoke about the Buffs’ aggressive approach at recruiting the wide receiver position. With McGeoghan’s eye-popping experience and demeanor, a lot of players should have an interest in coming to Boulder.

Henry Chisholm of DNVR pointed out that McGeoghan and the Buffs have already offered many of the top 2023 wide receivers.

Led by the No. 3 2023 WR in the nation and five-star prospect Carnell Tate, they’ve also offered No. 11 Braylon James, No. 18 Kyler Kasper, No. 20 Adarius Redmond, No. 22 Rico Flores and No. 23 Ashton Cozart, per 247Sports.

McGeoghan’s approach is a breath of fresh air for Buff fans, especially after losing a ton of talent across the entire roster over the past couple of months.

Times are changing in Boulder, although it might take some time for everything to be put into place. Nonetheless, McGeoghan’s approach could be huge for Colorado.

Colorado announces hire of former NFL assistant Phil McGeoghan as wide receivers coach

Phil McGeoghan will assume the role of CU’s wide receivers coach

Amid the transfer portal chaos that has plagued the Colorado Buffaloes over the past few weeks, Karl Dorrell has finally filled out his staff of assistants for the 2022 season. On Tuesday, Dorrell announced that Phil McGeoghan will fulfill the role of wide receivers coach.

McGeoghan most recently served as wide receivers coach for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers from 2018-20 before taking a personal leave of absence for the 2021 season. During his tenure, he coached Keenan Allen to two Pro Bowl selections and multiple franchise records.

He has also spent time coaching both the Miami Dolphins (2012-15) and Buffalo Bills (2017) wide receivers. In total, he has 15 years of coaching experience between college and the NFL.

Dorrell and McGeoghan previously crossed paths during their time with the Denver Broncos in the early 2000s. Dorrell was McGeoghan’s wide receivers coach during his short stint playing for the Broncos.

“I’m very excited about being reunited with coach (Dorrell),” McGeoghan said in a release. “I believe it’s always a goal in life to be able to work for people who know you, trust you, and know what you can bring to the table every day. So it will be a privilege to work for a man who has integrity like Karl, who is obviously very passionate about football. I love the state of Colorado, so to be reunited with a very special man, in a very exceptional place, to take on a job that I am really excited about doing, it’s going to be special for our family.”

Buffs reportedly eyeing Phil McGeoghan to coach wide receivers

The Buffs have a former NFL coach on the radar for their next wide receivers coach

The news surrounding the Colorado Buffaloes football program hasn’t been very encouraging.

A large number of players entered the transfer portal, including Brenden Rice and Jarek Broussard on offense. The defense will look very different next season as well with Christian Gonzalez, Mekhi Blackmon, Mark Perry and others also using the portal.

Nonetheless, the Buffs have work to do, and they began some of that work with the hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Sanford, who is one of many new assistant coaches in Boulder.

According to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and The Athletic, it appears that the Buffs are now focusing on a new wide receivers coach, Phil McGeoghan.

McGeoghan has worked for a number of NFL teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers.

McGeoghan’s tutoring of Keenan Allen is particularly intriguing. After being drafted out of Cal, Allen blossomed into one of the best wideouts in the league.

McGeoghan also worked with Zay Jones at East Carolina, where the now-Las Vegas Raiders WR set an NCAA record with 158 grabs in a season.

If the Buffs want McGeoghan, they need to work quickly to work out a deal with him, especially with Feldman reporting interest from other programs.

While the Buffs have a lot of questions to answer, bringing in McGeoghan as an assistant would be a major boost to the coaching staff.
