11 punt and kick return options for the 2021 Panthers

Who will be returning punts and/or kicks for the Panthers this season? Here are 11 possibilities, currently both inside and out of the organization.

The Carolina Panthers currently have a job, maybe two, open and someone has to do it.

In the aftermath of chiseling down their personnel into its active 53-man roster, the team has left its punt and kick return duties open basically to interpretation. There is no clear answer.

Prohibitive favorites such as wide receiver David Moore, running back Reggie Bonnafon and whatever they tried to turn offensive weapon Trenton Cannon into are all out. And while there are a small number of candidates left that have experience taking back kicks, that experience is relatively minimal.

So, who’s going to do it? Here are a few options, internally and externally, that the Panthers may have.

Internal

WR Brandon Zylstra

If their Week 1 game against the New York Jets were to kick off tomorrow, Zylstra’s the guy for either side. But again, the experience is limited as he’s had just five career punt returns (one for Carolina in 2019) and three career kick returns over his three pro campaigns.

WR C.J. Saunders

Head coach Matt Rhule made note of his confidence in Saunders as a returner on Wednesday, saying he knows he “could go back there in a second.” Like Zylstra, the undrafted free agent isn’t extremely well versed there quite yet, with 13 total punt returns over his collegiate and preseason careers. He’d also have to be elevated from the practice squad if he’s one of the choices.

WR DJ Moore

While enticing, Moore is a risky option. Sending your No. 1 receiver out to potentially get blasted by gunners isn’t the most sound of strategies. But Moore’s elite balance and speed as a ball carrier could set up him as a situational returner, perhaps in more pressure-filled spots during the season.

WR Shi Smith

With 21 career take-backs in college (and 22 if you count preseason play), Smith would likely be the favorite for either kicks or punts if he wasn’t currently dealing with a shoulder injury. And while the setback won’t keep the 2021 sixth-rounder out for too long, he’s not a realistic choice until we hear otherwise about his status.

RB Chuba Hubbard

The hard-working rookie added return duties to his résumé this summer, bringing back a kickoff for 23 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rhule and his staff are clearly trying to find a sweet spot for Hubbard, but it likely won’t be as a punt returner as he continues to settle in.

RB Rodney Smith

Smith, like Saunders, would need to jump off the practice squad and into an active slot to claim the job. And if he does, it could be as a kick returner, as he amassed 30 takes over his long stay at the University of Minnesota.

External

WR Pharoh Cooper: The only man to take back punts for Carolina in 2020, Cooper could be called back for his specialities on special teams.

WR Justin Hardy: Another local option, Hardy fielded 20 punts for the Atlanta Falcons back in 2018.

RB Chris Thompson: The 30-year-old has reps in both areas, with a combined 44 returns over his eight-year career.

WR Marqise Lee: Lee’s been bouncing around of late. But he has the tools and history, with a career average of 30.3 yards per kick return, to man return duties.

RB Duke Johnson: Johnson may be looking for an opportunity as more than just a special teamer. He does, though, have 20 career punt returns.

7 bubble players to watch in Jags’ preseason finale vs. Cowboys

While the starters who are available will play, Sunday’s game is equally important for some bubble players. Here’s our list of Jaguars who need a good performance to solidify a place on the team.

The final preseason game has almost arrived for the Jacksonville Jaguars as they will be taking on the Dallas Cowboys at 1 p.m. EST at AT&T Stadium. Afterward, Jags coach Urban Meyer and his staff have some tough decisions to make as they have to trim the final roster down to 53 players by 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

The Jags will enter Sunday’s game with plenty to figure out, and that’s especially the case on the back end of the roster. That means various bubble players need to make a splash against Dallas if they want to make it to the final roster, or even earn a practice squad designation. Here are a few players we feel will be in that category and believe the staff will be watching closely.

12 low-cost free agents who can help the Lions in 2021

Some budget free agency options for the Lions and GM Brad Holmes

Free agency begins on March 17th, the first time the new Detroit Lions management regime, headed by GM Brad Holmes, will have a chance to add significant pieces to the roster (outside of the Goff-Stafford trade, which also becomes official that day). We don’t yet know how Holmes, assistant GM Ray Agnew and senior executive John Dorsey will handle free agency acquisitions, but one way they can help the team is to find value without overpaying.

The theme here is to find lower-budget free agents who have a chance to contribute right away, but also with an eye toward perhaps being part of the longer-term success of the Lions.

None of the 12 players listed here should command more than $5 million per year on average. If that threshold isn’t met, the Lions probably need to pass on the players here. Also, none will be more than 31 years old at the start of the 2021 regular season.

7 supporting role Carolina Panthers players who deserve recognition for 2020 season

Here are seven supporting role players who deserve recognition for their solid work this year.

It’s almost January, which means it’s a good time to reflect on the past year. 2020 has been hard on a lot of people, especially those who have frontline jobs and don’t have the luxury of staying safe by working from home. They deserve our thanks. In that same spirit of gratitude for those of us who play supporting roles, today we’d like to recognize a few Carolina Panthers who might have gone overlooked despite performing well this season.

Here are seven supporting role players who deserve recognition for their solid work this year.

Panthers Highlights: QB Will Grier connects with WR Pharoh Cooper on a deep pass

Perhaps the greatest attribute Will Grier brought with him from West Virginia is the touch on his deep passes.

Perhaps the greatest attribute Will Grier brought with him from West Virginia is the touch on his deep passes. Watch the Panthers’ second-year quarerback connect with wide receiver Pharoh Cooper on a long ball with Jeremy Chinn in coverage at practice on Sunday.

Chinn is going to take his lumps from time to time, as he has a steep learning curve coming from the level of competition he faced at Southern Illinois. However, his athleticism and ability to line up at several positions should earn him a long-term spot with this defense.

As for Grier, he will be battling P.J. Walker for the right to be the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind Teddy Bridgewater over these next few weeks. If he doesn’t win that competition, he’ll be an excellent candidate for one of the four protected practice squad positions.

Meanwhile, Cooper has some more competition to deal with.

The team just signed former Saints receiver/returner Tommylee Lewis, who does many of the same things although not as well. Cooper has been primarily a special teams contirbutor in his career, having only caught 50 passes. The more he can offer on offense, the better.

Panthers 2020 free agency: Grading the first wave of moves

Here are our letter grades for their first week’s worth of moves.

It’s been six days since the NFL’s legal tampering period began ahead of 2020 free agency. Since then, some massive changes have taken place around the league. The Panthers have been near the epicenter of the seismic shifts, making a major move at quarterback and being active in signing low-cost free agents to fill out a depleted depth chart.

Here are our letter grades for their first week’s worth of moves.

Signing: QB Teddy Bridgewater

Teddy Bridgewater

What the Panthers are doing with Cam Newton is both a bad look and probably bad for business, depending on how it plays out and if they can get anything in a trade. However, the signing of Bridgewater is a solid move if you separate it from the Newton situation. He’s familiar with Joe Brady’s scheme and is one of the most effective game-manager quarterbacks in the league. Bridgewater’s three-year, $63 million deal isn’t official yet, but when it is it’ll give them an above-average starting QB at a reasonable price.

Grade: B+

WR Pharoh Cooper joining Panthers

Cooper had a career-high 25 receptions for 243 yards for the Cardinals in 2019 and scored his first NFL receiving touchdown.

The Arizona Cardinals have lost their third free agent of the offseason. The latest is receiver Pharoh Cooper. The Carolina Panthers announced Friday they signed receiver Pharoh Cooper to a one-year contract.

Cooper was a waiver claim by the Cardinals in late 2018 and played 12 games for the Cardinals in 2019. He initially did not make the team out of training camp but was re-signed after Christian Kirk injured his ankle.

He had a career-high 25 catches with the Cardinals for 243 yards and his first NFL receiving touchdown.

He also returned 17 punts and 25 kicks.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury was a fan of his versatility and mentality.

He now leaves to the Panthers.

Cooper joins receiver Damiere Byrd and defensive lineman Rodney Gunter have also agreed to sign with other teams. Byrd got a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, while Gunter got three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Panthers sign WR/KR Pharoh Cooper to 1-year deal

The third new receiver is Pharoh Cooper, who has been signed to a one-year deal according to the official team website.

The Panthers came into 2020’s free agency period needing some serious help at wide receiver. They’ve now signed three of them in just the last few days, beginning with Seth Roberts on Wednesday and continuing with Keith Kirkwood yesterday.

The third new receiver is Pharoh Cooper, who has been signed to a one-year deal according to the official team website.

Cooper (5-foot-11, 208 pounds) played his college football at South Carolina and then get picked by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. Since then, he’s played 31 games for LA, 14 for the Cardinals and one with the Bengals. So far, Cooper has caught 50 of 73 targets, totaling 433 yards and one touchdown.

It’s nice to have more depth at wide receiver. However, Cooper’s true value is on special teams, as he’s one of the better return specialists in the NFL. He has extensive experience with both punts and kickoffs. He’s returned 62 punts so far for a total of 612 yards (including a career high of 53). On kickoffs, he’s posted a remarkble 2,093 yards and a touchdown on 86 attempts.

This fills a big need for Carolina’s special teams unit, which struggled awfully last year. Cooper easily projects as the team’s top kick returner.

2020 NFL Free Agency: Saints options from the Cardinals

NFL free agency is nearly a month away. We take a look at which Arizona Cardinals free agents could be a fit for the New Orleans Saints.

[jwplayer aLKeB6lY-ThvAeFxT]

With NFL free agency nearly a month away, we are going to take a look at every team’s free agents in the days ahead. We will highlight which players could be potential options for the New Orleans Saints, starting with the Arizona Cardinals.

Cardinals free agents

  • RT Marcus Gilbert
  • LT D.J. Humphries
  • TE Charles Clay
  • G Max Garcia
  • C A.Q. Shipley
  • QB Brett Hundley
  • DE Rodney Gunter
  • OLB Brooks Reed
  • RT Jordan Mills
  • DE Clinton McDonald
  • OLB Cassius Marsh
  • FS Josh Shaw
  • DE Jonathan Bullard
  • RB Kenyan Drake
  • SS Chris Banjo
  • DT Zach Kerr
  • CB Brandon Williams
  • WR Damiere Byrd
  • WR Pharoh Cooper
  • RB D.J. Foster
  • K Zane Gonzalez (RFA)
  • S Charles Washington (RFA)
  • ILB Joe Walker (ERFA)
  • CB Kevin Peterson (ERFA)
  • T Justin Murray (ERFA)

Options for the Saints

That is a lot of free agents that Arizona will have to sort through, and some big names are in that as well. But very few stick out as viable options for New Orleans. The Saints could potentially be in the market for additional depth at guard, wide receiver, linebacker, and tight end.

One intriguing name on the list is outside linebacker Cassius Marsh. The 27-year old is an unrestricted free agent, which means he is allowed to test the waters with no strings attached. Marsh played in 16 games in 2019, and was given a PFF grade of 63.1, well above average for his position. He could provide added depth to a position group that found itself hurting down the stretch, at a reasonable cost.

Another name that could show up on the Saints’ radar is defensive tackle Rodney Gunter. In 2019, Gunter played a large role in Arizona’s defensive line for 14 games until he was placed on the injured reserve with a toe injury in December. With uncertain futures for co-starters David Onyemata and Sheldon Rankins, Gunter could provide security to the Saints defensive line in 2020.

Wide receiver Pharoh Cooper is another intriguing name that could potentially be worth looking into. Primarily as a punt and kick returner (Cooper’s efforts sent him to the Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro recognition back in 2017), the receiver still chipped in on offense with the Cardinals. By adding Cooper, it would allow New Orleans to utilize Deonte Harris more in the passing game in 2020. Harris could be allowed to take on a larger role in the offense without fear of an injury derailing the return game.

Cardinals, Rams share 4 player connections

Each team has two players who spent time on the other team’s roster previously.

The Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams will face off this weekend at State Farm Stadium. Both teams have a pair of players who used to play for the other. There are two former Cardinals on the Rams’ roster and two former Rams on the Cardinals’ roster.

Who are they?

Cooper was drafted by the Rams in the fourth round in 2016 and played three seasons for them. He was even a Pro Bowl and All-Pro returner in 2017. The Rams cut him in 2018 and the Cardinals claimed him off waivers.
