Arkansas falls in finale Mississippi State, takes series, anyway

Mississippi State salvages one win Sunday as Arkansas takes series against Bulldogs.

Mississippi State escaped with one win, anyway.

Arkansas won Friday and Saturday against the Bulldogs, but MSU plated a pair of runs in the 12th to take the series finale on Sunday, 5-3

Luke Hancock and Logan Tanner had back-to-back RBI singles in the 12th to provide Mississippi State with the winning runs. Before that, all three of the Bulldogs’ runs came on solo homers. Hancock and Tanner each had one and RJ Yeager added another.

Second-ranked Arkansas had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth when the Diamond Hogs loaded the bases with one out. But [autotag]Peyton Stovall[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Turner[/autotag] struck out on back-to-back at-bats, sending the game to extra innings.

Brayden Webb was the only Diamond Hogs player with more than a hit. He went 2 for 3 with a walk and a home run.

[autotag]Jaxon Wiggins[/autotag] worked five innings for the Razorbacks, striking out four and giving up just two runs. Mississippi State scored both of its runs off Kole Ramage, who took the loss.

Arkansas is back at it Tuesday when it hosts Central Arkansas for a one-off series at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Sticks Of The Game: Hitting Streaks Continue for Stovall, Turner, Lanzilli

Three of Arkansas’ most reliable bats keep adding games to their impressive hit streaks.

When it comes to hitting the baseball, Arkansas did not get off to the start that they had hoped.

However, with Southeastern Conference play opening up this weekend, it seems that the bats are coming alive at the right time.

The No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks defeated Grambling, 14-1 on Tuesday by only grabbing eight hits all the while taking advantage of four Tiger errors. The headlining swing came off the bat of Braydon Webb, who crushed a grand slam over the right field wall that rattled off of the newly-opened development center to place the run-rule into effect.

The home run was important for the team, but more so for Webb, who finally slugged his first hit of the season after 23 previous at-bats.

The other story from the game, is the extension of hit streaks for three of Arkansas’ key bats… Peyton Stovall, Michael Turner, and Chris Lanzilli.

Lanzilli extended his streak to a team-best nine games by adding two more to his season total. Peyton Stovall led the team in hits Tuesday with three, which added to his streak of eight games. Finally, Turner added a home run to his season total, extending his streak to seven games.

Diamond Hogs give up seven in the sixth, fall to SELA in opener

Southeastern Louisiana scored seven runs in one inning – their total for the game – in a win over Arkansas on Friday.

Arkansas’ first rough pitching outing of the season was too much for the quiet bats to overcome.

Southeastern Louisiana scored all of its runs in the sixth inning as the Lions surprised the Razorbacks on Friday afternoon, 7-3.

Arkansas pitchers had been excellent through the team’s first seven games, never giving up more than five runs in a single game. Things fell apart badly in just the one inning against SELA as the Lions had 10 batters reach base in the frame.

Arkansas starter Connor Noland worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits with no walks while striking out five and giving up three runs. He was pulled in the sixth after hitting the first batter of the inning and giving up a pair of singles.

His replacement, Kole Ramage, gave up a single, threw a wild pitch and walked two batters before he was pulled. Ramage didn’t retire a batter.

Isaac Bracken then tried his hand. He, too, hit the first batter, followed with a strikeout, but was pulled after walking the next Lions hitter.

Lefthander Zack Morris gave up a single to his first batter, walked the next and finally got Arkansas out of the inning by inducing a fielder’s choice.

For the frame, SELA had seven runs on just four hits.

Arkansas pulled two runs back in the seventh when Peyton Stovall walked with the bases loaded and Cayden Wallace plated another run with a sacrifice fly.

The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch of the first game scheduled for noon.

Arkansas takes season-opening series with win over Illinois State on Sunday

Eight of Arkansas’ nine starters reached base while Jaxon Wiggins and Kole Ramage limited Illinois State in the Diamond Hogs’ win.

Arkansas baseball salvaged a series win after dropping the season opener on Friday, beating Illinois State, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville.

Chris Lanzilli and Brady Slavens hit back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth to break a 1-all tie while Jaxon Wiggins and Kole Ramage worked around trouble over nine to limit Illinois State.

The Redbirds pulled within a run in the eighth when Ryan Cermak hit a solo home run off Ramage to start the inning. But Arkansas’ right-hander retired the next three to keep Illinois State at bay.

Arkansas built the lead back to two in the bottom of the inning when Jalen Battles doubled home Zack Gregory, who walked as the inning’s first batter.

Wiggins allowed seven baserunners and a run in his five innings of work, striking out five, as well. He worked himself into trouble in the second when he allowed back-to-back singles at the beginning of the inning and a wild pitch gave Illinois State runners at second and third. A fielder’s choice allowed the Redbirds to score first, but Wiggins induced a flyout and groundout to get out of it.

Ramage worked four innings in relief, striking out six and giving up two hits, including the solo homer.

Slavens went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Battles, Robert Moore and Peyton Stovall each had two hits with Moore crossing the plate twice and Stovall once.

Arkansas will travel to Round Rock, Texas, on the weekend for three games as part of the Karbach Round Rock Classic. The Diamond Hogs play Indiana on Friday, Stanford on Saturday and Louisiana on Sunday.

Moore, Wiggins, Stovall all named Preseason All-Americans

Arkansas freshman Peyton Stovall was named All-American – not Freshman All-American, but the big team – with Robert Moore and Jaxon Wiggins on Monday.

Three different Arkansas baseball players were named All-Americans on Monday by Baseball America.

Second baseman Robert Moore, freshman infielder Peyton Stovall and sophomore pitcher Jaxon Wiggins were all tabbed by the publication. Voters for the team were members of scouting departments from 14 different Major League Baseball franchises.

All three players are considered potential future first-round picks.

Moore was the least surprising pick. He hit.283/.384/.558 last year and led the team with 16 home runs while batting in 53. He was postseason All-American by Baseball America last year.

Stovall is considered one of the five best freshman in the country. He largely played middle infield in high school, but Arkansas’ press release states coach Dave Van Horn will use him at first base most often when the season begins in six weeks.

Wiggins started four games as a freshman last year, posting a 5.08 earned-run average, striking out 28 in 23 innings. He is expected to be in the mix for a weekend starting role as a sophomore.

Arkansas opens it season February 18 against Illinois State at Baum-Walker Stadium.
