Conversation with Brady Manek helped Pete Nance decide on UNC

UNC basketball forward Pete Nance talked with Brady Manek about his lone season at UNC and he said it was best experience of his life’.

When Hubert Davis took over the UNC basketball program last year, he wanted to bring a more modern twist to the ‘two-big’ system that Roy Williams played in his front court.

Davis quickly went out and secured a commitment from one of the top transfers on the market in Oklahoma stretch-4 [autotag]Brady Manek[/autotag]. Manek not only had career numbers in almost every category, he also was named the nation’s top transfer addition.

Manek went on to play for the Charlotte Hornets Summer League roster these past few weeks and has played himself in position to make a G-League roster at a minimum.

The former Tar Heel was very complimentary of his time at UNC throughout his one season in Chapel Hill and apparently even after his season was up at the NBA G-League camp.

During UNC’s media availability on Monday, newcomer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] said that Manek told him that ‘last season was the best experience of his life’.

Nance played four years at Northwestern before announcing his transfer to North Carolina this offseason.

With the Tar Heels returning four starters, losing Manek because he was out of eligibility, Nance is sliding right into the role that Manek had last season.

Nance averaged averaged 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a season ago for Northwestern and also shot 49.2 percent on 3.1 three point attempts per game.

While Nance doesn’t have the exact same skillset of Manek, it’s clear that their discussion definitely helped Nance make the decision to commit to UNC.

ESPN Bracketology: UNC basketball keeps one-seed in updated bracket

UNC basketball is a one-seed in the updated ESPN Bracketology as it remains one of the top teams heading into the 2022-23 season.

The College basketball season is still nearly four months away and March Madness is eight months away but that hasn’t stopped the predictions for what the NCAA Tournament bracket will look like.

In the updated ESPN Bracketology, the UNC basketball program sits as a one-seed following a lot of movement from other teams. The Tar Heels sit as the top seed in the East Region.

The other No. 1 seeds include Gonzaga, the top seed, Kentucky and Houston.

Some notable programs in the East Region include No. 8 Michigan State in a potential second round matchup, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Arkansas and No. 4 Villanova. The Tar Heels are matched up against Northern Kentucky in the first round.

The Tar Heels return four starters and all of its rotation pieces from last season when they made a deep run all the way to the National Championship game, falling to Kansas by three.

UNC also dipped into the transfer portal and replaced star forward Brady Manek with Northwestern transfer forward Pete Nance. Nance comes to UNC after 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He also shot 45.2 percent from three a season ago.

Other notable ACC programs are No. 3 Duke and No. 5 Virginia. In total, there are six ACC teams projected in this field, with Florida State listed in the First Four Out.

Look: UNC newcomers at first summer practice

The four incoming players for UNC basketball took part in their first official summer practice this week.

Earlier this week, it was the first time that UNC basketball freshmen and incoming transfers were included in practice.

This also means it was the first time that UNC’s lone transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] was in a Carolina jersey.

Nance announced his commitment to the Tar Heels last week following his official visit.

Along with Nance, UNC’s freshmen [autotag]Jalen Washington[/autotag], [autotag]Seth Trimble[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyler Nickel[/autotag] also had their first practice.

North Carolina enters this offseason as the No. 1 team in the country and brings back four starters from last year’s team that made it to the National Championship game.

Nance averaged 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a season ago for Northwestern. Washington, Trimble and Nickel were all four-star recruits.

Pete Nance to be ‘elite role player’ for UNC basketball this year

247Sports broke down the addition of Pete Nance and thinks he will be an ‘elite role player’ for the UNC basketball program next year.

The UNC Basketball program landed prized-transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] over the weekend and put the finishing touches on its roster for the 2022-23 season.

But, with a lot of star power back for the Tar Heels, what role will Nance be expected to play? For starters, he needs to try to replace some of the production lost with the departure of Brady Manek.

247Sports went through the ACC and took a look at each transfer addition for every program. Their take on Nance? An ‘elite role player’.

Landing Nance was a huge win for North Carolina. He’s not Brady Manek. Nance is a good 3-point shooter; Manek was a great one. But Nance can give North Carolina a little bit more than Manek in every other area of the game. He’s a much better defender with legitimate length and better-than-you’d-expect speed. Nance also gives Hubert Davis so many more options offensively. He can spot up in the corner when Armando Bacot is in the game, but Nance could also shift to the 5 when Bacot is out and UNC could feature some very athletic lineups with Puff Johnson at the 4 and Nance at the 5. Nance will be an elite role player for a North Carolina team with national championship aspirations.

Nance averaged averaged 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a season ago for Northwester, but his skillset goes beyond just those numbers.

He is a tremendous playmaker, someone who averaged 2.7 assists per game a year ago, too. That’s a skill that Manek was able to showcase last year for UNC, averaging 1.8 assists per game, a full assist higher than his previous career-high at Oklahoma.

Shooting is also where Nance can impact the UNC offense. He also shot 49.2 percent on 3.1 three point attempts per game. For reference, Manek shot 40.3 percent on 6.2 three point attempts last year.

Nance will be a tremendous asset for the Tar Heels and has the versatility to play multiple different roles for Hubert Davis and UNC.

Hubert Davis comments on addition of Pete Nance

UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis made his first official comments on the transfer addition of Pete Nance on Monday.

The UNC basketball program waited over two months to make an offseason addition but over the weekend made a big splash in the transfer portal by adding Northwestern transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag].

Nance has one year of eligibility remaining and will be using it at North Carolina.

The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season. He also shot 45.2 percent from three (42-of-93).

UNC head coach Hubert Davis commented on the addition on Monday after the signing was made official.

“To complete our roster, we needed a big-time experienced  player who could contribute right away,” says head coach Hubert Davis. “We found that player in Pete Nance. His character and proven ability, experience and leadership are the perfect fit to our team, program and community. I’m so thankful I will have the opportunity to coach Pete this upcoming season.”

Nance will slide into the spot held last season by Brady Manek. Nance joins Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, RJ Davis and Leaky Black who all return from North Carolina’s starting lineup.

The Tar Heels are projected by numerous outlets to be the preseason No. 1 team heading into next season.

Tar Heels land transfer forward Pete Nance

The UNC basketball program has added forward Pete Nance out of the transfer portal after he completed an official visit.

Just a day after his official visit wrapped up in Chapel Hill, former Northwestern forward [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] made his decision.

On Saturday, Nance announced that he is committed to North Carolina and will join the Tar Heels for his final year of eligibility. The forward previously spent the past four seasons with Northwestern before deciding to test the NBA draft waters and transfer. Nance’s recruitment has been a bit quiet since he withdrew his name from the NBA draft but a visit to North Carolina sealed the deal for the Tar Heels.

UNC now adds another forward to the roster who is expected to gain valuable minutes.

With Brady Manek gone, UNC is returning four starters from a team that reached the title game a year ago. Now, Nance can help fill that void along with Puff Johnson and Dontrez Styles who are also expected to get key minutes at the forward spot playing alongside Armando Bacot.

As a senior last season, Nance averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

College basketball analyst says UNC ‘expected’ to land Pete Nance

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports says he’s hearing that the UNC basketball program is ‘expected’ to land Northwestern transfer Pete Nance.

The UNC basketball program is in the middle of a big recruiting week and that revolves around one of the top transfers that entered the portal this offseason.

Northwestern transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] is currently on an official visit to UNC and by all accounts, the forward should end up in North Carolina for next season.

Senior college basketball analyst for CBS Sports Matt Norlander gave his take on the Nance situation, saying he’s been told ‘it’s likely/expected’ that Nance will end up a Tar Heel.

North Carolina has been trying to fill the void left by Brady Manek at the 4 position this offseason. It went after Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer before he landed at Illinois. The only other option that UNC was tied to was Nance.

Nance averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season. He shot 49.7 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from three on 3.1 attempts per game. For his career, he is a 35.6 percent shooter from three.

Nance had put his name in the NBA Draft and went through the draft process before withdrawing before the deadline.

He has one year of eligibility left due to the covid year of eligibility.

Transfer target Pete Nance set to visit UNC

Top transfer target Pete Nance will be on the UNC basketball campus this week for an official visit per multiple reports.

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program are hoping to make one more addition to their roster for the upcoming 2022-23 college basketball season.

After missing out on Baylor’s Matthew Mayer, the Tar Heels have turned their focus to Northwestern’s [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] who withdrew from the NBA draft and announced he was transferring. While Nance’s recruitment in the portal has been quiet, Inside Carolina is reporting that the Tar Heels will get a visit from Nance this week.

Here is what IC wrote on the news reported by national recruiting analyst Eric Bossi:

The 6-11 forward is expected to take an official visit to North Carolina this week, multiple sources confirmed to Inside Carolina and 247sports National Recruiting Director Eric Bossi.

Nance has one year of eligibility left and averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, with 2.7 assists and 1.1 blocks for Northwestern a year ago. That effort was good enough to earn him honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

With one scholarship spot open on the roster, UNC has made Nance their priority target in the transfer portal. Now, let’s see if this visit can win him over and he becomes a Tar Heel.

Report: UNC in pursuit of transfer Peter Nance

The UNC basketball program is reportedly pursuing forward Pete Nance according to a new report on Thursday.

With the deadline to stay in the NBA draft or return to college now passed, the focus now shifts fully to the transfer portal for college programs and that includes North Carolina.

After missing out on Matthew Mayer, the Tar Heels are hoping to add a player out of the portal with one spot open on their roster. And their biggest target could be Northwestern forward [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag].

According to Riley Davis of The Field of 68, the Tar Heels are in pursuit of Nance after he announced he was withdrawing from the NBA draft process and returning to college.

As a senior, Nance averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the field. Nance has started in 74 of 107 appearances during his Northwestern career.

This is the only report connecting UNC and Nance so far but he does make sense for them to pursue especially at the forward spot.

UNC Basketball: What the Tar Heels plan in the transfer portal means

The UNC basketball program is playing the ‘wait and see’ game in the transfer portal but is in a good spot to land its key targets.

The college basketball transfer portal has taken over the offseason the past two seasons and that has translated into not only spending a great deal of time recruiting from high school, but also out of the portal in order to get an instant impact player.

For the UNC basketball program, the addition of Brady Manek last season proved just that and is an example of how to use the portal correctly. But, not every team uses it the same way.

Some teams load up on transfers while others pick and choose very specific pieces to finish the roster puzzle. Either way, every team is active in the portal.

247Sports Isaac Trotter took a look at all of the Power Six teams and how they have attacked the portal. For the Tar Heels, they are waiting on their ‘Brady Manek’ type player.

Patience is a virtue for [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag]. The UNC coach can count scholarships. He can see that four starters are running it back from a team that was seconds away from winning a National Championship. He also can see that UNC has a hole at the 4 now that [autotag]Brady Manek[/autotag] has departed. North Carolina will undoubtedly land an impact forward. They’re playing the waiting game very well and are positioned to land a big fish.

The Tar Heels have one scholarship available after the departure of [autotag]Kerwin Walton[/autotag] on the final day of the one-time transfer window. With the big loss of Manek, UNC has narrowed its search to two targets.

Former Northwestern forward [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] and former Baylor forward [autotag]Matthew Mayer[/autotag] are the two players that the Tar Heels are after. Both players entered their names into the NBA Draft but only Mayer was invited to the NBA Combine.

Nance participated in the G-League Elite Camp earlier this week, but didn’t receive a special invitation to the combine meaning he is most likely expected to return to the college level.

Nance, a 6-foot-10 forward, averaged 14.6 points per game, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game a season ago. He also shot 45.2 percent from three on 3.1 attempts per game. For his career at Northwestern, he has a 9.6 point per game average and has added 5.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

Mayer, a 6-foot-9 forward, averaged 9.8 points per game last season. He also added 5.0 rebounds and shot 32.4 percent from three on 4.1 attempts. He has career averages of 6.9 points per game, 3.2 rebounds and shot 34.5 percent from three.

Both players have one year of eligibility remaining. The deadline to return to college and maintain your eligibility is June 1.
