All 30 MLB stadiums, ranked: 2023 edition

Here are the best places to watch a baseball game.

Editor’s note: This story was originally published in March 2023.

It’s that time of the year again.

March Madness is winding down, and Major League Baseball is back in our lives.

For the first time in what feels like forever, MLB will have a full season that starts on time, and we’re so happy about that. While we’re in for a few rule changes this season, you won’t see any new stadiums opening in MLB this year. However, several teams did make some upgrades to existing stadiums, and it was enough to shake up our stadium rankings for 2023.

Using the same — yes, subjective — criteria of general atmosphere, design, location, amenities, food and character that we used in past seasons, we’ve arrived at an updated rankings of MLB ballparks to get ready for the 2023 baseball season.

For those who managed to make it down to San Diego despite the bad weather and/or flight cancellations, Oregon made sure the trip was well worth their trouble. This game will be talked about among Duck football fans for years to come as Oregon scored a touchdown with 19 seconds left to stun North Carolina 28-27 in a classic Holiday Bowl.

Oregon could have very well packed it up midway through the fourth quarter as nearly nothing was working offensively. The 24-14 deficit felt like 44-14. But quarterback Bo Nix finally played to form and led the Ducks on two late scoring drives to stun the runner-up from the ACC.

It was certainly a game that will go down in history. The epic win, the first game in Petco Park, and the Camden Lewis extra point that doinked off the upright which made a sound so loud it might have been heard through the Gaslight District of San Diego.

Here are the photos of a memorable night inside the home of the Padres.

How to watch, listen, stream the Holiday Bowl – Ducks vs Tar Heels

The Ducks and Tar Heels will play for the first time on the gridiron in the first Holiday Bowl since 2019 and the first inside Petco Park.

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these, but the Holiday Bowl is right around the corner. No. 15 Oregon is set to play North Carolina in San Diego.

This will be the first Holiday Bowl since 2019 and the first one to be played inside Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres. This game was set to return last season, but Covid issues within the UCLA program cancelled its game with North Carolina State.

Since the game is going to take place in a supposedly baseball-only stadium, the configuration isn’t going to be the standard fare. One end zone will be in front of the Padres dugout down the first base line with the other side going out into the left field.

The Holiday Bowl will also feature a new television home. It had been on ESPN for many, many, years. But Fox bought the broadcast rights for the bowl game.

This will be the first meeting between the Ducks and Tar Heels in football. We all remember the 2017 epic Final Four matchup where the Ducks just missed out on defeating the eventual national champs.

A fan has been taunting the Astros with a megaphone from balcony near the Padres’ stadium

Amazing.

Before the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to the baseball season and sent games behind closed doors, the Houston Astros were essentially guaranteed a season full of hostility from opposing crowds.

The Astros cheating scandal dominated the offseason, and we were already seeing that hostility play out during spring training before the sport was shut down.

But closed-door games haven’t completely shielded the Astros from their much-deserved heckling. Fans will always find a way. We’ve seen that play out during the ALCS matchup with the Rays at San Diego’s Petco Park.

Reporters at the stadium noticed someone watching the game with a megaphone from a nearby apartment balcony. He was taunting the Astros for the cheating scandal.

According to The New York Times, this fan shouted insults like:

“Attention: Members of the Houston Astros organization that participated in the sign-stealing scandal of 2017 and 2018. You all are a bunch of cheaters. The global baseball community has not forgotten your transgressions against the game.”

Just legendary.

The Times actually caught up with this fan: 30-year-old Chicago White Sox fan, Tim Kanter.

He went as far as to purchase a megaphone that could project sound the approximate 700 feet from his balcony to the field (he did the math to figure out the distance). And Astros second baseman Jose Altuve evidently noticed the heckling as he could be seen turning around and looking towards the outfield as Kanter was speaking.

We haven’t been able to find video of Kanter’s antics, but plenty of reporters heard it.

You have to respect that effort from a totally neutral fan who just wanted to shame the Astros for cheating. Well done, Tim.

He’ll have another chance during Thursday’s Game 5.

MLB Parlay Bet Payday: Bank on this 4-way parlay bet

Looking to cash in on MLB’s 2020 Opening Day? Bank on this 4-way parlay bet in the return of baseball.

Major League Baseball returns Thursday, July 23, with two games. The New York Yankees visit the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants face the rival Los Angeles Dodgers. The rest of MLB will throw their first pitches on the official Opening Day of Friday, July 24. Let’s get some action in on MLB’s Opening Day slate with a can’t miss four-team parlay.

MLB Opening Day Parlay: Picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday, July 21 at 3:15 p.m. ET.

San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: UNDER 8 (-110)

SP Clayton Kershaw takes the mound on Opening Day for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons for the Dodgers. He has owned the Giants over his career with a 1.74 ERA and 350 strikeouts in 342 1/31 career innings. He has given up two or fewer runs in eight of his last 13 starts against the Giants from 2017 to 2019. In his last five Opening Day starts, Kershaw is 3-1 over 30 2/3 innings pitched, striking out 40 batters and allowing only six earned runs.

While Giants SP Johnny Cueto doesn’t have the Hall of Fame resume of Kershaw, he has pitched well in his career against the Dodgers. His record is only 4-5 in Los Angeles, but he has a 2.36 ERA and 1.066 WHIP at Dodgers Stadium.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs: CHC moneyline (-129)

It wouldn’t be a bad idea if the Brewers went with an opener in their first game. Instead, SP Brandon Woodruff will take the mound. He’s 0-0 in five appearances against the Cubs with a 6.75 ERA.

Chicago sends out SP Kyle Hendricks who was dominant at home last season with a 6-2 record in 14 starts with a 2.04 ERA and a 0.874 WHIP. He has pitched well against Milwaukee in his career as well, going 8-6 with a 3.08 ERA all-time against the Brewers. Neither team lost key contributors to their lineups and the Cubs had more production in the box in 2019.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres: SDP moneyline (-129)

The Diamondbacks signed SP Madison Bumgarner this offseason to replace the loss of former ace Zack Greinke and he gets the start on Opening Day. He has been pretty average, by his standards, in San Diego. Bumgarner is 5-7 with a 3.75 ERA in his career at Petco Park.

Arizona beat up on San Diego in 2019. They were 8-2 in their last 10 games versus the Padres and finished 15 games better than them in the NL West last season. Diego’s promising 24-year-old SP Chris Paddack pitched well in his three starts against Arizona. Paddack was 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA and struck out 20 batters over 16 2/3 innings pitched.

Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros:  HOU -1.5 run line (-139)

This is probably the chalkiest bet of the whole parlay but there’s a reason why Houston is heavily favored. The Astros had the best winning percentage against division opponents in 2019, the Mariners had the fourth-lowest. Houston has beaten Seattle in 13 straight games and won 18 of 19 meetings last season.

Seattle’s Opening Day starter is Marco Gonzales, who’s 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his career against Houston. Expect 2019 AL Cy Young Award winner SP Justin Verlander to be in mid-season form after spending the offseason dealing with the Astros’ sign-stealing controversy and a groin injury which had him set to miss the original Opening Day.

MLB Opening Day Parlay: Payout

A $100 wager at +940 odds for this four-leg parlay would bank a profit of $940 if all four bets win.

2020 MLB Futures Odds: How many games will the San Diego Padres win?

Looking at 2020 MLB futures odds for how many games the San Diego Padres will win in the 60-game MLB season.

How many games will the San Diego Padres win in the 60-game 2020 MLB season? We look at the Padres MLB futures odds, including their projected 2020 win total and Over/Under odds at BetMGM, and make our best bet.

San Diego Padres’ 2019 recap

The 2019 season looked promising for the Padres early; San Diego was in first place in the National League West through 19 games, behind the hot-hitting of rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. and respectable pitching from a young pitching staff.

They were 45-45 heading into the All-Star break but injuries to Tatis and struggles hitting—their lineup was 28th in batting average and third in strikeouts post-All-Star break—caused them to finish with a disappointing 70-92 record. As far as their quick 2019 betting recap: The Padres had a 76-86 run line record and Over/Under record of 73-76-13.

San Diego Padres’ offseason

San Diego has made splashes in free agency—signing 1B Eric Hosmer in 2018 and 3B Manny Machado in 2019—but mostly stood pat this offseason. The Padres have the 13th highest payroll in the majors. Their only notable additions were RP Drew Pomeranz and 2B Brian Dozier, who’s actually in the minor leagues at the moment.

The more notable additions were via trade, with OFs Trent Grisham and Tommy Pham arriving in San Diego.

San Diego Padres’ 2020 schedule

San Diego’s 60-game season starts when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, July 24. The season wraps up Sunday, Sept. 27 at the San Francisco Giants.

Every team will play a regional schedule and how that rounds out for the Padres is they’ll play 40 games against NL West foes and the other 20 games against AL West teams. San Diego is the second-favorite to win the NL West, behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

LOVE THE PADRES OVER 30.5 WINS in 2020. The 60-man player pool rule for 2020 should benefit the Padres who have the second-best farm system in baseball, according to MLB.com. This holds true even after calling up 20-year-old Tatis who hit .317 with 22 home runs and 53 RBI in just 89 games last season.

The starting rotation is a bunch of kids in their mid-20s and a few could take steps forward. If they don’t, again the Padres have awesome pitching prospects they could put into the lineup. Also, they have two players (Machado and Tatis) tied for top-seven favorites to win NL MVP. If these big names stay healthy and rake, the Padres are going to be dangerous.

Plus, through 60 games in 2019, San Diego was 31-29, which would push them Over this year’s 30.5 wins total.

San Diego Padres’ playoff odds

Based on the value here, I LIKE the PADRES TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS (+320). I expect the Dodgers to win another NL West crown, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility for the Padres to make the race interesting. The bet mostly hinges on them earning a wild-card berth and, for me, betting $50 to win $160 for San Diego to make the postseason is worth it.

San Diego Padres’ World Series odds

The most likely outcome in the NL West race is the Dodgers winning it so that would force the Padres to win the wild card. It’s tough seeing this young pitching staff winning three straight road playoff series en route to a World Series title. PASS.
