Pennsylvania’s top ’25 edge rusher backs off commitment to Ohio State, can Penn State swoop in?

One of the top players in Pennsylvania has backed off his commitment to Ohio State.

Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] likes to keep some of the top recruits in Pennsylvania in the commonwealth, and he may have a second chance to keep one of the top players in the Class of 2025 from leaving the state. [autotag]Zahir Mathis[/autotag], a four-star edge rusher from Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia announced he is backing off his commitment to Ohio State just weeks before the start of the early signing period for college football.

“After much consideration, I’ve decided to reopen my recruitment and decommit from Ohio State,” Mathis said in a message posted on his social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I appreciate Coach Day, Coach Johnson and all the coaches at Ohio State. They are still a top school for me. This is a life decision. Please respect my decision!”

As indicated by Mathis in his message, Ohio State is still a top contender to secure his commitment whenever the time comes for him to lock in his commitment. According to the updated On3 recruiting prediction machine, the Buckeyes are still the overwhelming favorite with a 97.7% chance of receiving his commitment. We will see if that changes at all in light of recent events, but the door is now officially open for Penn State to try keeping one of the state’s top recruits closer to home.

Mathis is the no. 4 overall player in Pennsylvania according to 247Sports and the state’s top-ranked player according to Rivals and ESPN. Naturally, he would be a dream pickup for Penn State if they were able to receive a commitment from Mathis. But Mathis will have plenty of suitors ready to jump in line with his announcement of a de-commitment.

Penn State was the first offer to Mathis back in May 2021.

The early signing period for the Class of 2025 will run from Dec. 4 through Dec. 6.

TV and kickoff time for Penn State’s regular season finale vs. Maryland announced

What time will the Penn State-Maryland football game be played?

Penn State will be on the road for a second straight week this weekend when they visit Minnesota with hopes of staying on track to host a first-round College Football Playoff game coming together. But the Nittany Lions will be closing out the regular season in Beaver Stadium next week with a home game against Maryland. And now we know what time the game will kick off.

Penn State announced its home game against Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 30 will start at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will air on Big Ten Network. As this will be the last regular season game of the year in Beaver Stadium, Penn State will honor its seniors with a pregame ceremony. Of course, there is a real chance another home game will be added to the schedule in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Penn State will come into this week’s road game at Minnesota knowing where it stands in the playoff picture. Penn State’s playoff ranking will be updated on Tuesday evening but the no. 4 Nittany Lions figure to hold firm in the selection committee’s rankings this week after a blowout win over Purdue. That ranking, without the Big Ten championship, would slate Penn State to be in line to host a first-round game in the expanded College Football Playoff on either Dec. 20 or Dec. 21.

Tyler Warren named Big Ten offensive player of the week

Tyler Warren adds another weekly Big Ten honor to his name after a big game against Purdue.

For the second time this season, Penn Stater tight end [autotag]Tyler Warren[/autotag] was named the Big Ten’s offensive player of the week.

Warren caught eight passes for 127 yards and a touchdown in Penn State’s road win at Purdue. It was Warren’s fourth 100-yard game to tie the school record for a tight end previously set by Ted Kwalick. His touchdown was also the 16th touchdown reception of his career to tie Pat Freiermuth’s school record for a tight end. Warren now has the most 100-yard games in a single season by a Penn State tight end in school history, and the most in a single season by any player since Jahan Dotson had five in the 2021 season.

Warren also rushed for a team-high 63 yards with a 48-yard touchdown run in the mix. According to the Big Ten, Warren is the only tight end in conference history with four rushing touchdowns in a single season.

Warren was previously named offensive player of the week by the Big Ten following his monster performance earlier this season against USC.

Other players receiving weekly Big Ten honors for this past weekend included Oregon linebacker Matayo Uiagalelei and Washington defensive lineman Russell Davis II sharing defensive player of the week, Oregon kicker Atticus Sappington being named special teams player of the week, and Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. being the Big Ten’s freshmen of the week.

Tyler Warren and Penn State will be back on the road this week for a game at Minnesota. The Nittany Lions opened as a two-touchdown favorite against the Gophers.

How to watch CFP rankings for Penn State football fans: Time, live stream, channel

2024’s first CFP rankings will offer an early look at the playoff bracket for [TEAM] football. Here’s how to watch.

After another weekend of college football, including Penn State’s road blowout of Purdue, the College Football Playoff rankings will be updated once again on Tuesday evening. With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the potential playoff bracket is beginning to come into view, but conference races in the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12 could still lead to some big changes in the playoff field in the weeks to come.

Penn State, led by tight end [autotag]Tyler Warren[/autotag] and edge rusher [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag], continues to be sitting in a comfortable spot to make the College Football Playoff, and the chances of hosting a first-round playoff game are looking better by the week. The Nittany Lions should still be sitting in a great spot for a first-round game at home when the rankings are updated Tuesday evening as they prepare for this week’s final road game of the season at Minnesota.

The Big Ten could still have four of the top five teams with Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana all joining Penn State in the top five. But only one will be getting a first-round bye as the Big Ten champion.

Here is how to catch the latest College Football Playoff rankings reveal on Tuesday.

TEAM football CFP rankings projection

Penn State was ranked no. 4 in last week’s playoff rankings. After drubbing Purdue on the road, as expected, the Nittany Lions should remain no. 4 following the results of last weekend. Oregon (no. 1), Ohio State (no. 2), and Texas (no. 3) all won this past weekend so they should remain in front of Penn State. Indiana (no. 5) was idle this weekend so the Hoosiers will likely stay behind Penn State.

There will be some changes in the top-10 though. BYU (no. 6) and Tennessee (no. 7) each lost, which should allow Notre Dame (no. 8), Miami (no. 9), and Alabama (no. 10) to move up a couple of spots. Ole Miss (no. 11) and Georgia (no. 12) should move up as well.

How many teams are in College Football Playoff 2024?

For the first time, there will be 12 teams participating in the College Football Playoffs. There are five automatic bids for each of the Power Four conference champions and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. The remaining seven slots are given to the seven at-large teams.

ESPN computer predicts Penn State win probability at Minnesota

The ESPN win probability is trending up for Penn State at the right time this weekend.

Penn State will play one final road game this regular season before closing out the season at home, and a chance to host a first-round College Football Playoff game is coming into view. Of the two final games of the regular season, the more challenging of the two continues to appear to be this week’s road game at Minnesota. But as the game has finally arrived, it seems the trends for this week’s Big Ten road trip are swinging back in Penn State’s favor at just the right time.

ESPN’s win probability figures are giving Penn State a 75.1% chance of coming home with a win against the Gophers this week. That figure is notable because the projected win probability for Penn State in this particular matchup had been decreasing on a weekly basis since the start of October.

On October 1, Penn State’s win probability was calculated at 77.9% according to ESPN’s computers. That figures dropped to 74.2% the following week, then to 72.1% the following week, and eventually down to 68.1% after Penn State lost to Ohio State.

Penn State was always viewed as the favorite according to ESPN’s calculations, but the trends were going against the Nittany Lions and favoring the Gophers. This was largely because Minnesota was stringing together some solid wins and the home-field advantage was playing a factor. But Minnesota lost its last game against Rutgers before heading into the bye week, and Penn State has dominated each of its last two opponents after losing to the Buckeyes.

Penn State opened as a nearly two-touchdown favorite this week against the Gophers. A win would put Penn State at 10-1 with one final game at home against Maryland to play. Penn State is currently in a great spot to host a first-round College Football Playoff game, and a win against Minnesota would potentially go a long way to securing a first-round playoff game in Beaver Stadium in December.

So there is a lot on the line for Penn State this weekend, even if a spot in the Big Tne championship game may be just out of reach.

Can Penn State still play in the Big Ten championship game?

Penn State’s path to a Big Ten championship is still there, but the Nittany Lions will need some help.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, there is still a chance Penn State can play for the Big Ten championship. But in addition to taking care of its remaining schedule, Penn State will need some help from around the conference in order to book a trip to Indianapolis to play for the first Big Ten championship in the 18-team era of the conference.

At 6-1 in Big Tne play, Penn State sits in fourth place in the Big Ten standings following the result of Week 12. Oregon essentially clinched its spot in the Big Ten championship game with a defensive victory at Wisconsin on Saturday night. There is a bizarre tiebreaker that could bite Oregon in the end, but that is considered highly unlikely at this stage. That leaves one spot up for grabs between three teams, including Penn State.

And there will be some clarity to the Big Ten championship game situation in Week 13 when the two other teams competing for a spot in Indy, Ohio State and Indiana, square off in the game of the week. Indiana is undefeated this season and Ohio State has just one loss (to Oregon). Indiana owns a one-game lead on Penn State in the standings and Ohio State holds the edge over the Nittany Lions due to a head-to-head victory a couple of weeks ago.

The winner of next weekend’s Ohio State-Indiana will have the inside track to Indianapolis going into the final week of the regular season. Indiana will wither be 11-0 and 8-0 in Big Ten play going into its final game of the regular season against 1-9 Purdue, or Ohio State will go into the final game of the regular season at home against Michigan already owning head-to-head tiebreakers against both Penn State and Indiana.

What are the tiebreakers?

The Big Ten released its conference championship game tiebreakers prior to the start of the season. They are mostly the same as they have been in previous years for division championship tiebreakers.

Here is the exact wording of the tiebreaker procedure for the Big Ten with more than two teams tied this season (this procedure is repeated until the number of tied teams is whittled down to two);

  1. The records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on winning percentage in games among the tied teams
    (a) If all teams involved in the tie did not play each other, but one team defeated all other teams involved in the tie, the team that defeated all other teams in the tie is removed from the tiebreaker, and the remaining teams revert to the beginning of the applicable tiebreaker process (i.e., two team or three or more team tie).
    (b) If all teams involved in the tie did not play each other and no team defeated all other teams involved in the tie, move to the next step in tiebreaker.
  2. The records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on winning percentage against all common conference opponents played by all other teams involved in the tie.
  3. The records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on winning percentage against the next highest-placed common opponent in the standings in order of finish:
  4. The records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on the best cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents:
    (a) In the event of an unbalanced schedule (i.e., less than nine conference games are played), the records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on the best cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents, regardless of how many conference opponents each team played. If winning percentage is equal for all conference opponents, move to next step in tiebreaker.
  5. The representative will be chosen by the by the highest ranking by SportSource Analytics (team Rating Score metric) following the regular season.
  6. Random draw among the tied teams conducted by Commissioner or designee.

How does Penn State get into the Big Ten championship game?

The easiest way Penn State gets to Indy is by winning its final two games, Ohio State handing Indiana a loss, and then Ohio State and Indiana each lose their respective regular-season finales for two losses.

So what will it take for Penn State to creep past the Buckeyes and Hoosiers, and are there any tiebreakers that could break Penn State’s way?

First things first, Penn State cannot take another loss. Penn State must win its final two games at Minnesota and at home against Maryland to remain a one-loss team.

Ohio State may be the favorite at this point to get to Indy. The Buckeyes will likely be favored at home against Indiana and against Michigan the following weekend. If Ohio State beats Indiana, the Buckeyes will be sitting pretty when they face the Wolverines. A second Ohio State loss could knock Ohio State out of the mix entirely because catching Indiana will be impossible and Penn State could have just one loss on its record.

Indiana is in a tough spot if it loses to Ohio State this weekend. Indiana would likely need both Penn State and Ohio State to lose the final weekend of the season in order to make the short trip to Indianapolis.

If Penn State can handle its own business starting next week at Minnesota, then fans of the Nittany Lions will be in the awkward position of having to root for Ohio State (against Indiana) and then for Michigan (against Ohio State) in order to see Penn State in a tiebreaker with the Hoosiers.

The fourth tiebreaker is the one that would likely help Penn State over Indiana if it comes down to those two schools.

It’s a longshot for Penn State, sure. But there is still a path to the Big Ten championship game. Just root for the Buckeyes next week and then you’ll never have to root for them again.

Penn State will know where things stand prior to their next game. Ohio State and Indiana kick off their game next week at noon Eastern. Penn State will visit Minnesota at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

Best photos from Penn State’s blowout win at Purdue

Here are some of the best shots taken from Penn State’s latest win against the Boilermakers.

Penn State continueds to keep up its pace for a possible spot in the College Football Playoff with an easy road win at Purdue in Week 12. Penn State dominated the Boilermakers, 49-10, in a game highlighted by big plays from star players Drew Allar, Tyler Warren, and Abdul Carter. The Nittany Lions improved to 9-1 with the win and continued to be in a great position for hosting a possible first-round College Football Playoff game with just two games remaining in the regular season.

There were plenty of reasons to smile on this one, even if the quality of the opponent was one of the lowest Penn State will face this season.

Here are some of the best photos from Penn State’s lopsided win against the Boilermakers.

Penn State will be on the road next week when the Nittany Lions visit Minnesota. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Minnesota had the week off after losing a road game at Rutgers in Week 11.

Penn State steamrolls Purdue to move to 9-1, keep home playoff game hopes looking strong

Tyler Warren and Drew Allar lead Penn State to blow out win over lifeless Purdue to keep home playoff game in reach.

[autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] threw three touchdowns and [autotag]Tyler Warren[/autotag] racked up 190 all-purpose yards with two touchdowns scored as Penn State easily took care of Purdue on the road on Saturday afternoon. Penn State’s 49-10 victory over the Boilermakers improved the Nittany Lions to 9-1 with two games remaining in the regular season. The win helps keep Penn State’s Big Ten title hopes alive for now and keeps them in a good position to host a first-round game in the upcoming College Football Playoff.

Penn State’s offense got off to a strong start with two long touchdown drives on their first two offensive series, including the game-opening drive. Allar completed a short touchdown pass to [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag] to cap the opening drive of the game with a score and an early lead. On Penn State’s second possession, Allar then completed a pass to Warren for a 15-yard touchdown to go up 14-0. The second touchdown drive of the game covered a span of 93 yards.

[autotag]Nicholas Singleton[/autotag] gave Penn State a 21-3 lead in the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run immediately following a big gain through the air by Warren on a well-designed play. Warren took the snap and tossed it back to Allar on the right side of the field. Allar then completed a cross-field pass back to Warren, who took off for a big gain down the left sideline.

Purdue had a great shot to cut the early deficit to 14-7 but De’Nylon Morrissette caught a seemingly wide-open pass just outside of the Purdue endzone. It seemed he was confused by his spot on the field as he stood just outside the end zone’s markings where the sideline was painted the same color. Even if he got back inbounds though, he would have been flagged for stepping out of bounds before touching the football. Purdue settled for a field goal, and it would be the only points they put on the board until midway through the fourth quarter with the game well in hand.

The offense had a terrific game, but so did the defense. Not surprisingly, [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag] was the center of attention throughout the game with his pressure and speed leading to some big moments. Carter had five tackles, all solo, including two tackles for loss and a QB hurry. But it was a play he made chasing down a Purdue ball carrier that drew a big response from CBS broadcaster Gary Danielson. Carter shed a blocker as he came across the line of field and chased down C.J. Smith, who caught a short screen pass on the other side of the line. Carter brought him down from behind after blazing past the blocker.

With a 35-3 lead late in the third quarter, Penn State began taking out starters and focused on running the clock as much as possible. Beau Pribula enjoyed the moment with a 49-yard touchdown run and a late fourth-quarter touchdown pass of 24 yards to Luke Reynolds for some extra style points for the College Football Playoff selection committee to soak in.

Penn State will be on the road next week when the Nittany Lions visit Minnesota. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Minnesota had the week off after losing a road game at Rutgers in Week 11. Penn State leads the all-time series with Minnesota 10-6 and won the most recent meeting with the Gophers in 2022, 45-17. But Penn State lost the last time it visited Minnesota in 2019, 31-26.

A win next week in Minnesota and Penn State would wrap up the regular season at home against Maryland knowing it will very likely be playing one more game in Beaver Stadium in December. But a win next week is probably essential to keep that hope going.

Penn State vs. Purdue injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 12

All the latest updates and news on Penn State’s injury report ahead of a Week 12 game vs. Purdue.

After a big primetime victory in front of a whiteout crowd last weekend, Penn State looks to keep the good vibes rolling this week on the road against Purdue, a team with just one win all season. It would seem this would be a good week for the Nittany Lions to take a foot slightly off the gas pedal and rest some key players, but the Nittany Lions are caught in a position where it needs to continue racking up some style points to secure a potential first-round home game in the College Football Playoff while not risking any serious injuries to key players.

Penn State has some key players that have been banged up this season and in recent weeks, so it will be interesting to see how the team approached this afternoon’s Big Ten contest in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Big Ten teams are required to provide an updated player availability report two hours prior to kickoff. The information below will be updated once those reports go live from the Big Ten office.

Penn State injury report

  • Kaden Saunders

Purdue injury report

Nicholas Singleton injury update

Penn State star running back [autotag]Nicholas Singleton[/autotag] was taken out of last week’s game in the third quarter and he did not return to action. Singleton suffered what head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] termed a short-term injury, and it is expected Singleton will be available and play Saturday against Purdue. The nature of the injury was undisclosed and Penn State went on to win last week’s game 35-6, so there may have been less of a push to get Singleton back in the game anyway. And even this week, if Singleton is available to go, it would not be shocking if Penn State lightens his workload a bit in a game the Nittany Lions should win handily.

Dani Dennis-Sutton injury update

[autotag]Dani Dennis-Sutton[/autotag] left the Wisconsin game three weeks ago with an injury and has been slowly working his way back to full strength. Dennis-Sutton played just five snaps two weeks ago against Ohio State and doubled that to 10 snaps last week against Washignton after being listed as questionable.

Coziah Izzard injury update

[autotag]Coziah Izzard[/autotag] was banged up two weeks ago against Ohio State and was listed as questionable for last week’s game against Washington. Izzard did not play in the game.

Penn State faces Purdue at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+. The Nittany Lions are a four-touchdown favorite.

Penn State schedule: Is Penn State playing today?

Is Penn State playing today? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

Penn State will continue its journey to a possible spot in the College Football Playoff on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana when it faces the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Ten action this afternoon. All indications are this should be a virtual walkthrough for the Nittany Lions as they play the first of back-to-back road games in November.

Penn State won at home in a primetime game against Washington in front of a whiteout crowd last weekend. The 35-6 win was the perfect rebound win after taking its first loss of the season the previous week, and the win helped keep Penn State firmly among the top-ranked teams in the country according to the College Football Playoff selection committee. Penn State remains on course to potentially host a first-round playoff game in December but will likely have to win its final remaining games in the regular season to do so.

That work begins this afternoon with its road game at Purdue. You can watch the game at 3:30 p.m. on CBS, and Penn State is a massive favorite in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Penn State has dominated the all-time series with Purdue, with the majority of the meetings coming once the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten. The Boilermakers should be no real test for Penn State with just one win this season, but Penn State cannot afford to take anything for granted with the selection committee watching closely in the final weeks of the season.

Here is a look at Penn State’s 2024 schedule with all results so far, and what games remain in the regular season.

Penn State 2024 schedule

  • Sept. 7: Bowling Green (W, 34-27)
  • Sept. 21: Kent State (W, 56-0)
  • Sept. 28: Illinois (W, 21-7)
  • Oct. 5: UCLA (W, 27-11)
  • Oct. 12: at USC (W, 33-30 OT)
