Three Tigers set to compete in the 2025 Hula Bowl

Auburn fans will get one final chance to watch these stars compete at the collegiate level next Saturday in Orlando.

As the 2024 college football season begins to come to a close, three Auburn Tigers will have one more opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.

According to the official Auburn Football X (Twitter) account, quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] as well as linebackers [autotag]Dorian Mausi[/autotag] and [autotag]Austin Keys[/autotag] will compete in the 79th Hula Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Orlando, Florida.

Thorne ended his collegiate career with 10,961 passing yards, 86 touchdowns, and 43 interceptions thrown. As an Auburn Tiger, he completed 62% of his passes (361-of-582) for 4,468 yards and 37 touchdowns over a two-year span.

Keys played his final two seasons at Auburn, where he racked up 69 tackles over 20 games with five tackles for loss and four pass deflections. In 2024, Keys logged 12 pressures and missed four tackles.

Mausi only spent one season on the Plains, but he made quite an impact. The Duke transfer led the team in tackles (81) with 2.5 sacks, a pass deflection, and a forced fumble. Over his five year career, Mausi made 274 tackles with 18 tackles for loss.

The 79th annual Hula Bowl will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11 at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game can be seen on CBS Sports Network.

Jarquez Hunter announces plans to enter NFL draft

Hunter was a vital piece of Auburn’s offense for four seasons. Now, he is ready to turn pro.

A major bright spot in Auburn football’s recent history is ready for the next step in his college career.

[autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], who played a vital role in Auburn’s offense as the team’s premier running back over the last two seasons, announced Thursday that he is declaring for the NFL draft after four great years on the Plains.

Hunter shared the news on social media by writing to Auburn fans, coaches, and teammates. He began his post by sharing his gratitude for the opportunity to play for Auburn.

“First and foremost I want to thank GOD for blessing me with an opportunity to be able to play at my dream school and the position he has put me in. I give him all the glory and without him I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Although underutilized, there is zero doubt that the Auburn fanbase fully appreciated Hunter. Hunter stepped into the premier back role in 2023 following the departure of [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] to the NFL, where he played at a high level over his final two seasons on the Plains. His first season as the bellcow back saw him rush for 909 yards on 159 carries while scoring seven touchdowns.

He finally reached the 1,000-yard mark as a senior in 2024 by rushing for 1,201 yards on 187 carries. Playcalling limited Hunter’s rushing ability as he recorded less than 20 carries in nine of 12 games this season. Coincidentally, Auburn won three games when Hunter carried the football more than 20 times.

Hunter joins an extensive list of offensive starters who will move on from the program due to graduation including quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag], and tackle [autotag]Izavion Miller[/autotag].

Auburn football lands Oklahoma transfer QB Jackson Arnold

Has Auburn found its QB1 for the 2025 season?

Following the graduation of [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], the Auburn Tigers must look to a new name to lead the offense as the team’s starting quarterback.

Their search may have ended on Saturday morning.

Pete Nakos of On3 reports that former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold, who visited Auburn on Friday, has committed to the Tigers. He commits to Auburn after passing for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns in 16 games throughout two seasons.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] says that Arnold is a quarterback who can succeed at Auburn due to his understanding of the current offensive system.

“He’s as natural operating the RPO game as any kid mechanically that I’ve seen,” Freeze said Saturday. “I’ve seen enough on tape that he has a clear understanding of it. The thing that excites me the most is his mechanics are as good as they get. We’re not going to have to change a thing with that.”

Arnold signed with Oklahoma as the No. 4 quarterback of the 2023 recruiting cycle, a class that included Texas quarterback Arch Manning, Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, and South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers. The Denton, Texas native won Gatorade Player of the Year for his state after a senior season in 2023 that saw him pass for 3,476 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 921 yards and 24 scores.

According to Auburn athletics’ official website, Arnold is the highest-rated quarterback (based on high school ratings) to sign with Auburn. Arnold, along with 2025 signee [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag], will be the first five-star duo to grace the Auburn quarterback room at the same time.

Arnold will now join a quarterback competition between redshirt freshman [autotag]Walker White[/autotag] and 2025 signee Deuce Knight. Following the departures of [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag], Auburn is expected to add one more quarterback to its 2025 depth chart. Names to watch for in this regard are former Duke QB Maalik Murphy and former Stanford QB Ashton Daniels.

‘I like what I see so far’: Maalik Murphy enjoys recent visit to Auburn

Auburn made quite the impression on Murphy during his two-day visit.

Duke transfer quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag]’s recent visit to Auburn is credited as a success.

Auburn was the first stop on Murphy’s quest to find a new home after a successful redshirt freshman season at Duke. Murphy spent two days exploring Auburn’s campus and football facilities and meeting Auburn’s coaching staff. Murphy spoke with the media during his visit, where he broke down his positive experience on the Plains.

“This has been great,” Murphy said Wednesday. “Being here, being able to meet all the coaches, and be around the facilities, see the place for my first time. I’ve never been to Auburn before, and I like what I see so far.”

While on campus, Murphy spent time getting to know Auburn’s coaches and learning how he would be used in the offense should he sign with the Tigers. He listed that aspect of the visit as a positive as well.

“That’s huge for a quarterback, being able to relate to his head coach, and him being the guy that’s calling your play,” Murphy said. “So it’s been good to see it and kind of take mental notes of how I can see myself in the offense and produce.”

Murphy passed for nearly 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns for Duke in 2024, his lone season following his transfer from Texas. According to Adam Cole of The Montgomery Advertiser, Murphy’s only scheduled visit so far and there is no timetable for a commitment. Auburn is looking to fill the void left behind by two-year starter [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], as well as departing transfers [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag]. Auburn is also scheduled to host Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold for a visit this week.

Auburn named a potential landing spot for former USC quarterback Miller Moss

ESPN’s Max Olson believes Auburn has weapons that will allow Moss to succeed.

Auburn football has two young quarterbacks with bright futures in [autotag]Walker White[/autotag] and [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag]. However, following the departure of two-year starter [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], Auburn will need a “bridge year” to allow both quarterbacks to another season to develop.

Because of this, it is expected that head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] will look to fill the void by using the transfer portal. Several key names have declared their intention to enter the portal, including Washington State’s [autotag]John Mateer[/autotag] and Oklahoma’s [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag]. Ahead of the portal’s official opening on Dec. 9, ESPN’s Max Olson feels that one portal addition could fit in well at Auburn.

Olson suggests Auburn would be a great fit for former USC quarterback [autotag]Miller Moss[/autotag]. Moss, who has one season of eligibility remaining, passed for over 2,500 yards as a junior in Los Angeles last season and could find success by throwing to Auburn’s many targets at wide receiver.

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze knows he needs to go get a transfer QB who can take the Tigers to the next level in 2025. Auburn has a ton of promising young talent to build around, especially at wide receiver, with standout true freshmen Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons and Perry Thompson. Their presence makes Auburn an appealing destination for QBs like Moss, who have one year left and are looking to put up big numbers next season.

Outside of Auburn’s targets, Moss fits the mold by having starting experience and one season of eligibility. Moss took over the starting quarterback role for Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams this season, where he passed for at least 200 yards and one touchdown in nine games played. However, following a tough stretch of games that included a loss to Washington, where he threw three interceptions, USC head coach Lincoln Riley pulled Moss in favor of Jayden Maiava for the final three games.

Moss is looking for a home he deems a “better fit.”

“There comes a point where there’s a time to move on to new opportunities,” Moss said in an interview with ESPN. “And I’m hoping to better myself as a person and a player.”

In four seasons at USC, Moss has completed 65.9% of his passes for 3,469 yards and 27 touchdowns with just ten interceptions. The winter transfer portal window officially opens on Monday, Dec. 9, and will close on Dec. 28.

Former Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos receiving interest from Auburn

Is Castellanos a great fit for Auburn?

Auburn football will enter the 2025 season with two fewer quarterbacks following the graduation of [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] and the intent to transfer from Holden Geriner.

[autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Walker White[/autotag] remain on the team, and [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag] is expected to sign with the team this week. Could Auburn add experience at the position while White and Knight develop? According to a report from Rivals, it appears that Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze is exploring the possibility.

Adam Gortney of Rivals reported late Monday that Auburn is one of four schools showing interest in former Boston College quarterback [autotag]Thomas Castellanos[/autotag], joining Florida State, Missouri, and Miami.

Castellanos, a 5-9 196-pound quarterback from Waycross, Georgia, has played his two most recent seasons at Boston College after signing with UCF in 2022. While in Boston, Castellanos passed for 3,614 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. The 2024 season saw Castellanos expand his touchdown-to-interception ratio, where he threw 18 touchdowns to five interceptions.

The biggest storyline surrounding Castellanos took place during the Eagles 37-31 win over Syracuse on Nov. 9. Castellanos left the game due to a leg injury, which forced Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien to play Grayson James in the position. Following the game, O’Brien elected to keep James at the starting quarterback slot.

“I think what’s best for the team right now is for Grayson James to be the starter,” O’Brien said of the change at quarterback. “(Castellanos) has done a great job for us. He’s an awesome competitor. We have a lot of respect for Tommy. Obviously he wasn’t real thrilled with that. He’s taken a couple days.”

A few days later on Nov. 14, Castellanos announced that he was officially leaving the program and would enter the transfer portal once it opens on Dec. 9.

In eight games this season, Castellanos led Boston College to four wins while completing 99-of-161 passes for 1,366 yards and 18 scores. According to Pro Football Focus, Castellanos was pressured 69 times, which resulted in 18 sacks and seven turnover-worthy passes. As a runner, Castellanos rushed for 194 yards on 93 carries with a score.

The transfer portal officially opens on Dec. 9 and will remain open until Dec. 28.

Auburn quarterback Holden Geriner to enter transfer portal

The former top-15 quarterback prospect was buried on the quarterback depth chart for the entirety of his Auburn tenure.

Auburn sophomore signal-caller [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag] is reportedly entering the transfer portal following another season in a reserve role on the Plains.

A former top 15 quarterback prospect in his class, Geriner was buried on the quarterback depth chart for the entirety of his Auburn tenure. After spending his first collegiate season as the third-string quarterback behind [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] and [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag] in the quarterback room, Geriner failed to beat out transfer [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] for the starting quarterback role in 2023. With the aforementioned Ashford relegated to backup duty, the former four-star recruit saw his role once again reduced to “mop up” duty at the end of blowout games.

Things didn’t change for the better this season, as Geriner attempted just two passes in two appearances, both coming in the early season. The 6-foot-3 quarterback found himself fourth on the depth chart by the end of the season, behind the aforementioned Thorne, and freshmen [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Walker White[/autotag]. With White and Brown expected to return next season and the likely arrival of five-star quarterback [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag] and at least one transfer portal signal-caller, Gernier will seek a better opportunity at a new program next fall.

Over three seasons on the Plains, the former four-star quarterback completed 9 -of-20 pass attempts for 116 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Geriner officially recorded five rush attempts in an Auburn uniform, although three were sacks for negative yardage.

In photos: Alabama defeats Auburn in 89th Iron Bowl

Here are the best photos from No. 13 Alabama’s 28-14 win over Auburn on Saturday.

Auburn football fell to the No. 13 Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, 28-14.

The visiting Tigers stayed close to Alabama in the yards department, being out-gained 457-399. Quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] passed for 301 yards and a touchdown in the loss, but two late interceptions, including one on a trick play by running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], killed Auburn’s hopes of erasing the 14-point deficit in the final quarter of play.

Third down was an issue for Auburn on Saturday, as they converted just 4-of-12 opportunities. Considering that Auburn recovered three Alabama fumbles and picked off Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe once, the lack of being able to take advantage of extra opportunities on offense hurt the Tigers’ chances to pull off an upset win.

Instant analysis: Jalen Milroe, Alabama ends Auburn’s bowl hopes in Tuscaloosa

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe gained 360 of Alabama’s 457 yards in the Tide’s win over Auburn on Saturday, eliminating them from bowl eligibility.

Auburn football’s quest for bowl eligibility was officially halted on Saturday.

The Auburn defense could not slow down Alabama‘s offense as the Crimson Tide created separation in the second half by out-gaining Auburn, 457-399 on its way to a 28-14 win over the Tigers on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Alabama led by just eight points heading to halftime but quickly established dominance in the 3rd quarter by scoring two quick touchdowns to jump out to a 28-6 lead. Auburn cut into the lead on a touchdown pass from Auburn quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne [/autotag]to wide receiver [autotag]Cam Coleman[/autotag]. However, the Tigers’ comeback effort fell short in the 4th quarter as Auburn’s final two drives of the game ended with Thorne interceptions.

Another major factor in the game was the play of Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. Milroe ended the game by completing 75% (18-of-24) of his passes for 256 yards and rushed for an additional 104 yards and three scores.

Alabama held a tight 14-6 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime after outgaining Auburn in yards, 222-204. The Tigers struggled on third down during the first half, converting just 2 of 9 opportunities. Auburn also turned their three red zone opportunities into points. Kicker [autotag]Ian Vachon[/autotag] connected on kicks of 37 and 25 yards in the half while missing a kick from 39 yards early in the 1st quarter.

Jalen Milroe was the star of the show for Alabama in the first half. The Alabama quarterback scored twice on two runs in the half, including a 19-yard run to put Alabama on the scoreboard, 7-0, with 3:18 in the 1st quarter. Milroe extended Alabama’s lead to 14-3 with 2:44 in the 2nd quarter on a one-yard rush.

Alabama built upon its halftime lead by scoring two quick touchdowns within the first eight minutes of the 3rd quarter. Alabama running back Justice Haynes capped Alabama’s first drive of the 3rd quarter by scoring on a 2-yard rush to extend the Crimson Tide’s lead to 21-6. Milroe added his third score of the night on a 17-yard rush to push the Tide’s lead to 28-6 with 6:54 in the quarter. Auburn capped scoring in the quarter when quarterback Payton Thorne connected with wide receiver Cam Coleman on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 2:31 remaining in the 3rd. A successful two-point conversion cut Alabama’s lead to 28-14 heading into the last quarter of play.

Auburn ends the 2024 season with a 5-7 record and a 2-6 mark in SEC play. The next big chapter in Auburn football begins next week as the early signing period begins. Auburn’s newest roster pieces will sign beginning Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Payton Thorne, KeAndre Lambert-Smith break down Auburn’s game-winning play

The pair solidified Auburn’s upset of No. 14 Texas A&M by connecting on a two-point play in the 4th overtime.

Saturday night’s game between Auburn and No. 14 Texas A&M ended in typical “night game in Jordan-Hare Stadium” fashion.

Auburn led by 21 points early in the game before Texas A&M stormed back to take a 31-28 lead over the Tigers in the late stages of the 4th quarter. Auburn kicker later [autotag]Ian Vachon[/autotag] nailed a 29-yard field goal with 0:05 remaining in the game to force overtime with a 31-31 tie.

Chaos continued into the overtime as each team traded touchdowns and field goals in the first two periods before missing out on a chance to win in the third period.

Auburn finally emerged victorious when quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] connected with wide receiver [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] [autotag]in the 4th overtime period to push Auburn ahead, 43-41[/autotag]. Texas A&M failed to convert on their opportunity, thus solidifying the win.

Following the game, the duo behind one of the most memorable plays in Auburn history broke down the steps leading up to the play. Lambert-Smith says that the play has been practiced several times before and felt confident that the call would work.

“We have run that play since I’ve been here, since the summer. We hit it every day in practice against the defense. I was lowkey pitching for them to call it,” Lambert-Smith said postgame. “We tried it on one of the previous overtimes, I think it was the one where Payton scrambled and threw it out of bounds, and then we came back to it, and I’m like, ‘P, just throw it, it’s just like practice, just throw it and I’m ready to catch.’ He threw it, and I had to win, and I won. We won.”

Thorne broke down the play postgame by saying that his throw was less than perfect, but had confidence that Lambert-Smith could make the play.

“First off, it was a heck of a catch (by Lambert-Smith). The ball was a little behind him, and I had to throw it a little earlier than usual,” Thorne said. “We dressed up the boundary side more than we usually do on that play, and I was a tad late getting back but not too late. I put it up there and Dre had a few contested catches tonight, so obviously a great play by him.”

The game ended with Auburn fans rushing the field to celebrate with the team as their postseason hopes remain alive. Lambert-Smith, who is in his first, and last, season as an Auburn Tiger, says that the night was one he will never forget.

“I don’t know, it felt different. I put on my story, ‘last one in Jordan-Hare, let’s make it memorable,” and that is definitely something I will never forget,” Lambert-Smith said. “I was in the crowd, I was surfing, it felt like a movie. I felt like it was a great way to send the seniors out, the guys who have been here four or five years. I’m happy that I could be the one to do it, I don’t take it lightly.”

Thorne ended the game with 301 passing yards and two touchdowns while Lambert-Smith reeled in two passes for 104 yards. The duo, as well as the rest of the Auburn Tigers, will look to pull off another upset next Saturday on the road in Tuscaloosa against No. 15 Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
