Payton Talbott says he learned ‘valuable lessons’ at UFC 311 in first statement since loss

Payton Talbott suffered defeat for the first time at UFC 311 – and also apparently got his first scar.

[autotag]Payton Talbott[/autotag] entered UFC 311 with a heck of a lot of hype – and exited with not only his first loss, but his first scar.

During Saturday’s prelims at Inuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif., Talbott (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) was upset by veteran fighter Raoni Barcelos (19-5 MMA, 8-4 UFC) when he lost a unanimous decision.

After four days of silence, Talbott released a statement Wednesday on Instagram in which he said he learned valuable lessons in defeat.

“The vet gave me my first scar. May the skin heal itself to be strong and never split again. lucky to have such people in my life. fortunate to be able to learn valuable lessons. still had fun.”

Talbott, 26, was a -1209 favorite on average across major online sports books, per Best Fight Odds. The return on Barcelos was +750 on average. Perceived by many to be a budding star, Talbott had only gone the distance once prior to Saturday’s result. He had finished his three prior UFC appearances, submitting Nick Aguirre and knocking out Cameron Saaiman and Yanis Ghemmouri.

UFC 311 results: Raoni Barcelos erases Payton Talbott’s perfect record in massive upset

Raoni Barcelos was relentless against an undefeated Payton Talbott, scoring a huge upset win at UFC 311.

The largest betting favorite on the entire UFC 311 card failed to record a victory thanks to [autotag]Raoni Barcelos[/autotag]’ relentless pressure.

In the final preliminary bout at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif., Barcelos (19-5 MMA, 8-4 UFC) refused to allow the previously undefeated Talbott (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) to get comfortable. After 15 minutes, Barcelos earned unanimous scores (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) to hand Talbott the first loss of his professional career.

Right out of the gate, Barcelos rushed across the octagon to grab a single leg and take the fight to the canvas. Talbott remained calm and worked his way back up after threatening a guillotine. Barcelos didn’t give up, though.

Barcelos found an opening for a rear-naked choke after taking Talbott’s back. Despite getting in two deep choke attempts, Talbott escaped. An arm triangle couldn’t get the job done either, but his dominant grappling throughout the round appeared 10-8 worthy.

At the beginning of Round 2, Talbott had a little breathing room, but Barcelos still found a takedown within the first minute. Talbott got off his back and started to let his hands go behind heavy forward pressure, but Barcelos scored a takedown with 40 seconds to go to slow the momentum.

After listening intently to his corner between rounds, Talbott came out with effective striking, and initiated his own takedown. Barcelos grabbed the fence during an omoplata attempt, causing a brief pause in the action. After the restart, they returned to their feet and started lighting each other up until Barcelos decided it was time to return the fight to the mat.

Running down the clock while raining down ground and pound shots, the fight would conclude on the mat, and so would Talbott’s unblemished record.

Barcelos, 37, has now won back-to-back fights, and played the role of spoiler perfectly.

On the other side, Talbott, 26, who entered as the largest betting favorite on the card at -1600, walks away with a tough lesson in his fourth UFC appearance.

On the other hand, his opponent, Barcelos (18-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC), is coming off a submission win over Cristian Quiñonez back in February. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for the 37-year-old veteran, who’s 2-4 in his past six trips to the octagon.

Caolan Loughran thinks Payton Talbott is getting ‘too much hype,’ would absolutely fight him next

Caolan Loughran hasn’t seen enough out of Payton Talbott to warrant all his buzz.

MANCHESTER, England – [autotag]Caolan Loughran[/autotag] hasn’t seen enough out of [autotag]Payton Talbott[/autotag] to warrant all his buzz.

Talbott (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) continued to live up to his hype after a 19-second knockout of Yannis Ghemmouri at UFC 303 in July.

Loughran (9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) thinks Talbott is skilled, but was particularly critical of his UFC debut win over Nick Aguirre, in which he was taken down twice and controlled before ultimately winning by third-round submission.

“Payton Talbott is a good fighter – 100 percent a good fighter,” Loughran told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at the UFC 304 media day. “Fair play to him going well, but Jesus Christ, man: Cool the jets. I watched his debut. Whenever (Conor) McGregor was coming up, people were saying when he fights a grappler, he’ll get smashed. When (Sean) O’Malley was coming up, when he fights a grappler, he’ll get smashed. But it was speculation, really. We hadn’t seen it. I watched his debut, some lad (Aguirre) – I don’t know who the guy was – comes out, takes him down, takes the back, flattens him out, gasses.

“Comes out second round, gassed again, finds himself on his back. I’m like, ‘Jeez, lad, you’re giving your back every time.’ He is a good fighter – 100 percent and fair play to him. He sparked that kid (Yanis) Ghemmouri who pulled out on me Tuesday morning. I would urge anyone who’s watching this to hit pause and watch UFC France – there’s a video of him warming up for that fight – before you blow Payton up over that win. He is good, but he’s getting a wee bit too much hype at the weight class. There’s definitely tougher fights at 135 for less hype.”

Loughran will look to make it two straight when he takes on short-notice replacement Jake Hadley (10-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC 304 (pay-per-view, ESPN2, ESPN+) prelims at Co-op Live in Manchester, England.

He expects to run through Hadley – who will be moving up to bantamweight for the fight, then he’s open to fighting Talbott next.

“If the UFC want me to do that at the end of this year or the next, absolutely no f*cking problem,” Loughran said. “I’ll fight Payton Talbott next, no problem.”

Prospect Payton Talbott calls out Adrian Yanez after UFC 303 win: ‘That’s a dogfight’

Payton Talbott explains why he called out Adrian Yanez following his quick KO win at Saturday’s UFC 303.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Payton Talbott[/autotag] is not afraid to call for the big names, even though he’s still early into his UFC career.

The bantamweight prospect issues a callout over a battle-tested Adrian Yanez following his latest victory this past Saturday in the preliminary card of UFC 303. Talbott (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who stopped Yanis Ghemmouri (12-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in just 19 seconds, uses his post-fight interview in the cage to shoot his shot at one of the better strikers of the division,

“Adrian Yañez, let’s see if you belong in that top 20,” Talbott said on the mic. “I know I feel I belong there, and I know that’s a good fight for me.”

Later, speaking with reporters at the UFC 303 post-fight press conference, Talbott explained why he had Yanez on his mind.

“I just think that’s a dogfight,” Talbott said. “I just think that’s a tough fight, and we would put on a really good show, and it would just be fireworks. I respect the dude.”

As far as the performance, Talbott is turning many heads in the MMA community. He’s aware of the hype he’s starting to generate, and although the quick finish on Saturday fuled that, he does wish the fight would’ve gone longer.

“Everything is happening superfast,” Talbott said. “It’s kind of bittersweet. I kind of wanted to get more of that fight than I did, but it’s always good to come over prepared.”
