National reaction to Patriots fielding worst WR lineup in Bill Belichick era

The Patriots’ four available wideouts on Thursday night only have a combined 237 receiving yards and one touchdown on the season.

Things are impossibly thin for the New England Patriots at receiver.

On Thursday night, the team ruled out veteran wide receiver DeVante Parker, who was quarterback Bailey Zappe’s favorite target last week against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Now, the Patriots are down to JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Reagor as their primary healthy receiving options. Technically, Malik Cunningham could be included in there as well considering he’s taken reps at both quarterback and receiver.

All four players combined have 237 receiving yards and only one touchdown. That doesn’t exactly lead to much optimism for the unit’s chances against a tough Steelers defense on Thursday night.

The social media sentiment echoed the disaster that could potentially come from such a lackluster lineup.

Patriots make history with Week 13 loss in worst way possible

The Patriots are on the wrong side of history after Sunday’s loss to the Chargers.

Things are historically bad for the New England Patriots after falling flat on their faces at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, via Mike Reiss, the Patriots are the first team since the 1938 Chicago Cardinals that has given up 10 or fewer points in three consecutive games and still lost all three games.

Ouch.

That stat feels like a gut-punch because it puts into perspective how poorly the team has performed offensively. It has been a complete disaster to the point where the defense needs to be virtually flawless every week just for the team to even have a chance to win a game.

Coach Bill Belichick has done a phenomenal job coaching up the defense to overcome multiple injuries and still succeed at a high level. They somehow managed to hold a top-10 Chargers offense, led by one of the NFL’s most talented quarterbacks in Justin Herbert, to only six points.

But the offense has been a complete letdown.

The unit looked a little better with Bailey Zappe at quarterback than it did with Mac Jones in recent weeks, but it still failed to get the job done on every drive against a Chargers team with the worst passing offense in the league.

Belichick fortified the defense, while building an offensive sand castle tasked to withstand a hurricane. Is it really that big of a surprise things turned out this way?

Twitter reacts to another offensive meltdown for Patriots vs Chargers

The Patriots are once again a punching bag for criticism, following Sunday’s shutout loss to the Chargers.

With Bailey Zappe starting at quarterback, the New England Patriots fell in defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers by a 6-0 margin on Sunday. It didn’t appear to matter who was under center because the Patriots offense couldn’t get anything going.

One of the problems was the running game stalling after Rhamondre Stevenson went down with an ankle injury. Before exiting in the first quarter, he had rushed the ball nine times for 39 yards.

With this loss, the Patriots are the first team in the Super Bowl era to lose three straight games, despite allowing 10 or fewer points in all three of the games. It was another case of wasting a good defensive effort as New England dropped to 2-10 on the season.

Twitter had many strong opinions on New England’s loss, and here are some of the best reactions:

Twitter reacts to Bailey Zappe getting shut out in first half vs Chargers

Bailey Zappe is the starter, and the Patriots offense has still been a disaster.

So far, not much has changed for the New England Patriots with Bailey Zappe under center. He has avoided turning the ball over, which has been the Achilles heel for Mac Jones. But he’s missing throws, and he hasn’t put a drive together for points.

He mustered five completed passes for only 39 yards in the first half. The Patriots offense still looks like it’s stuck in mud, and the boo birds at Gillette Stadium were chirping early to let them know about it.

Granted, the conditions aren’t necessarily ideal for the Patriots on a rainy afternoon in Foxborough, and the team also lost its best playmaker, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, in the first quarter. Demario Douglas, the burgeoning rookie wide receiver, is also out with a head injury. There aren’t many options for Zappe to go to on the field at this point.

No one expected the Patriots to suddenly morph into a strong offensive team, but there was hope they could move the ball against a Chargers team allowing the most passing yards on average (280.0) in the NFL. It’s even more frustrating considering how well the defense is playing.

Despite not being near 100 percent, the Patriots defense still managed to hold a top-10 Chargers offense to only a field goal in the first half.

Here’s what fans were saying on Twitter after Zappe was shut out in the first two quarters:

Patriots are so bad Amazon used Bill Belichick instead of player in TNF preview

This is the new rock bottom for the Patriots…

The New England Patriots got flexed out of their prime-time Monday Night Football game against the Kansas City Chiefs on December 18, but a week before that game, they’re still locked in for a Thursday Night Football clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When previewing the game on Thursday, during the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys game, an interesting graphic went up on Amazon Prime Video.

Former NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt was used as the player graphic for the Steelers, while a picture of coach Bill Belichick was used for the Patriots. There clearly aren’t many players that could be classified as superstars on the Patriots’ roster.

Matthew Judon would have been perfect for the picture, if he was healthy. There are other healthy players that would have been worthy of a snapshot, like Jabrill Peppers, Christian Barmore, Rhamondre Stevenson, Matthew Slater, Kyle Dugger or Ja’Whaun Bentley.

But Amazon went with Belichick, and it had all of social media pointing and laughing once again at the expense of the 2-9 Patriots. Imagine losing a prime-time spot against the Chiefs and this happening all in the same day.

Yikes.

Patriots Twitter celebrating ninth loss of season to Giants

Patriots fans are actually celebrating Chad Ryland’s field goal miss in 10-7 loss to the Giants.

The spiraling 2023 season for the New England Patriots continued to go down the drain with the team blowing a potential comeback rally on Sunday.

Bailey Zappe, who replaced Mac Jones at quarterback in the second half, led the team on a potential game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter. The game came down to a 35-yard field goal attempt by rookie Chad Ryland, who ended up shanking the kick outside of the goal post.

It was a shockingly bad ending to another pitiful performance from the Patriots this season. If anything, the loss solidified their placement as arguably the worst team in the NFL.

It also solidified the fact that Jones isn’t the right man for the starting quarterback job in New England. Getting outplayed by Tommy DeVito and turning the ball over twice in the first half should be the end of that argument for any Jones diehards still clinging to hope out there.

But none of that matters at this point. The playoffs are out of reach, and the Patriots are in position to land one of the top picks in the 2024 NFL draft.

Oddly enough, that led to a social media celebration from most fans, following the loss to the Giants.

Twitter reacts to worst Mac Jones meltdown yet vs Giants

As if things couldn’t get any worse for Mac Jones and the Patriots offense…

Whoever said things couldn’t get worse likely jinxed New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

The third-year signal-caller came into Sunday’s game already on thin ice for his ugly Week 10 performance against the Indianapolis Colts. Yet, against a bad New York Giants team, Jones turned in his worst first-half meltdown for the Patriots this season.

He went 12-of-21 passing for 89 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in the first two quarters. There was also a near strip-sack fumble by Jones that the Patriots managed to recover.

With all of the questions surrounding the quarterback position, Jones didn’t do himself any favors in proving he was more deserving of the starting job over Bailey Zappe. Some of his throws in the game were mind-numbingly bad. If he wasn’t missing receivers, he was throwing the ball to the other team.

It has been an absolute mess of a performance from a player that was once viewed as the longtime answer at quarterback in New England. Here’s what fans were saying on Twitter after Jones’ pitiful first half against the Giants:

Patriots Twitter furious over reported dual-QB game plan with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe

Patriots fans are not happy with reports that both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe are expected to play against the Giants.

The New England Patriots have reached a new level of weird if recent reports regarding their quarterback plan for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants ends up being true.

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Patriots are expected to start Mac Jones at quarterback, but backup Bailey Zappe will likely also “be in the mix as well.”

Coach Bill Belichick was non-committal to naming a starting quarterback throughout the week. There was belief he could land on a decision before the game against the Giants, but it’s looking like the same song and dance could actually play out on the football field with the Patriots going with a dual-quarterback game plan.

Playing musical chairs at quarterback in a game is typically a bad idea, but somehow, someway, Belichick must view it as giving the team their best chance to win, assuming he goes through with it.

Given how poorly the season has gone for the Patriots, it’s hardly surprising to see them go down this path. It’s a convoluted mess right now in New England that grows even messier by the week.

Here’s what fans are saying on Twitter about the reported dual-quarterback game plan:

Patriots Twitter reacts to fallout from CB Jack Jones’ release

Social media is buzzing following the surprising release of Patriots CB Jack Jones.

Jack Jones’ time with the New England Patriots has officially come to an end.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported through Jones’ agent that the Patriots waived him on Monday. It’s a sad turn of events for what otherwise seemed like a promising future between the two sides.

There had been red flags on Jones coming out of college, but the Patriots overlooked those issues in hopes of getting him in their program for what initially looked like a bargain deal for a player with high-end potential. So New England took the plunge and selected the former Arizona State standout defensive back at No. 121 overall in the 2022 NFL draft.

Things got off to a great start initially with Jones stepping up and making big plays on the field as a rookie. However, the first hint of trouble was him getting suspended by the team late in the season. In June, he was arrested on gun-related charges, and he was recently benched in back-to-back games for performance issues and being late for a team meeting, reportedly.

It appears to have been a bunch of situations adding up that eventually led the Patriots to the decision to cut Jones. Here’s what people are saying about the release on Twitter:

Shared post by Julian Edelman has fans missing the old Patriots

Patriots fans are reminiscing over the old Patriots teams after this retweet from Julian Edelman.

If time apart really does make the heart grow fonder, New England Patriots fans have been experiencing a full-blown heartache remembering what the team used to be as opposed to what it is right now.

A perfectly-timed retweet by former Patriots wideout Julian Edelman dug up all sorts of emotions for fans.

The post came from the Patriots’ 2014 regular season matchup against the Denver Broncos. It was one of the epic Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning matchups with New England rolling to a 43-21 victory. The video was a highlight of Edelman taking a punt to the house with Brady running from the sidelines all the way into the end zone to celebrate with his teammate.

What started off as a simple highlight from the Patriots’ past turned into fans wanting to step into a time machine to take things back to the way they used to be.

You can’t really blame people for feeling that way considering the team is currently 2-7 and dead last in the AFC East division. The 2023 season has been a colossal failure the likes of which no one expected.

It’s a new and sad reality for longtime fans that remember the near two decades of dominance. Here’s what people were saying on social media about the video post:
