Here’s how Patriots players are taking reveal of brutal 2023 schedule

Patriots players know they have a big challenge ahead in the 2023 season.

The New England Patriots have one of the hardest schedules in the NFL in 2023.

The season starts with a game against the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles and ends in a rivalry matchup with a New York Jets team led by Aaron Rodgers in January. In between those two games is a full season slate that includes meetings with the Los Angeles Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs and of course, the Buffalo Bills.

This is certainly not going to be easy for a Patriots team looking to establish a new offensive identity after a 9-8 season. However, new pieces on both sides of the football should help, as New England looks to get back on the winning track.

How do the players feel about the schedule gauntlet? Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald was able to get an idea, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Dakota Randall.

“I think you could look at their schedule, and that would be the starting point for if the Patriots season is going to bottom out,” said Callahan, during an appearance on Thursday’s episode of 98 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher & Rich” show. “Because they don’t get a break. And that’s something that I know that they’re aware of — because hey, they can look at the schedule. But in texting with a few players, they’re like, ‘You know, there are no slacks here. There is no breather, there is no anything like that.'”

The Patriots will have an uphill battle ahead of them. However, they have several positive factors in play heading into the 2023 season, including new offensive coordinator Bill O Brien and only one missing piece from a defense that was strong in 2022.

Nevertheless, the Patriots seem cognizant of the upcoming challenge.

ESPN FPI ranks Patriots’ 2023 schedule as hardest in NFL

The Patriots face a mountain of a challenge with their 2023 schedule.

The New England Patriots may have an uphill battle heading into the 2023 season, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index. Per Seth Walder, the Patriots will have the hardest schedule in the NFL this coming season.

Just one look at the schedule and it’s easy to see why they’ll have their hands full. It starts out with the Philadelphia Eagles and features games against the Miami Dolphins, new-look New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs, just to name a few.

This may not be encouraging news for a team that is looking to get back onto the winning side of the equation. However, they have new pieces both on the roster and within the coaching staff. Those factors, and the need for Mac Jones to step up in his third season, could make for some interesting storylines in 2023.

New England will look to embark on a playoff push and make up for missing it last season after finishing with a losing record.

7 takeaways from the Patriots’ 2020 schedule

Making sense of the Patriots’ 2020 schedule.

The NFL revealed the 2020 schedule on Thursday night, which included the New England Patriots’ docket for the upcoming season. And it’s going to be a tough slog for New England. Not only will Patriots fans find themselves rooting for a quarterback not named Tom Brady, but they’ll be rooting against Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson and a handful of the league’s most gifted signal-callers. Wins won’t be easy to come by. Everything is going to feel different, at first.

But that’s the obvious takeaway, right? We took a deeper look at the schedule to drum up a few thoughts on how the league organized it for Bill Belichick and company. Here are seven takeaways from the Patriots’ 2020 schedule.

1. Week 1 might not feel good

With the Patriots in flux, they might find themselves struggling against the Miami Dolphins, who may end up starting Ryan Fitzpatrick, even after drafting Tua Tagovailoa in the first round. If Fitzpatrick is under center and working against Jarrett Stidham, we could see a surprisingly experienced team in Miami playing against a surprisingly inexperienced in New England.  What’s more, the Patriots will be on their home field, but it may not feel like an advantage, if there’s no one in the stadium amid the coronavirus pandemic.

What if the Patriots suffer a defeat against the Dolphins? And worse still, what if Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers make a statement win against the New Orleans Saints? I’d say it’s possible.

Only the Patriots have a tougher schedule than the Jets in 2020

The Jets finished the 2019 season with a 7-9 record, but that didn’t stop them from landing one of the toughest schedules in 2020.

The Jets finished the 2019 season with a 7-9 record, but that didn’t stop them from landing one of the toughest schedules in the NFL in 2020.

In fact, only the Patriots have a tougher slate than Gang Green this coming campaign based on opponents’ 2019 records. Meanwhile, the rest of the AFC made the top five.

With games against both of last season’s Super Bowl teams — the Cheifs and 49ers — the Seahawks, Rams and two against the Bills, there’s no denying the Jets have a tough road ahead of them. Take into account that the Cardinals, Colts and Broncos should all be better, and there are very few gimmes on Gang Green’s schedule.

With that said, the strength of the schedule, as mentioned, is based on how opponents did last season. With teams like the post-Brady Patriots and post-Rivers Chargers on the agenda, there’s reason to believe that at least a few of New York’s opponents won’t be as good as they were a year ago.

With that said, this is a difficult schedule for the Jets, no matter how you look at it.
