Bulls’ Patrick Williams could be worth $95 million contract extension

Patrick Williams should be a staple on the Chicago Bulls for years, and as extension talks begin, look to De’Andre Hunter for a comparison.

All eyes are on this summer for the Chicago Bulls. After missing the playoffs this past season, they have a ton of tough decisions to make if they hope to get back into the postseason conversation. It all starts with Nikola Vucevic and free agency, but there are some other decisions they have to make as well.

It’s fallen under the radar, but Patrick Williams is contract extension eligible this offseason. While his counting stats didn’t take a huge jump this past season, Williams looked good in his third NBA season. And at 21 years old, he still has plenty of room to grow.

During a recent edition of the NBA Front Office Show podcast, Keith Smith of Spotrac unveiled what he believes an extension for Williams could look like. He said the Bulls shouldn’t feel uncomfortable handing him a De’Andre Hunter-like extension, depending on their other financial decisions. Hunter landed a four-year, $95 million extension with the Atlanta Hawks ahead of this past season.

“I don’t know that I’d feel super uncomfortable with giving him like De’Andre Hunter-ish extension,” Smith said. “I think he’s shown just as much as Hunter had shown at that point in his career. So, I really liked Patrick Williams.”

Hunter’s counting stats look more impressive than Williams’, but he’s also been given a larger role in Atlanta’s offense than Williams has been handed in Chicago.

With his solid defensive presence and ever-improving three-point shot, Williams should be a valuable asset in Chicago for years to come. A Hunter-like extension may seem rich, but Williams’ potential as a two-way player is through the roof.

Chicago Bulls mock trade flips DeMar DeRozan, Patrick Williams

This mock trade would see the Chicago Bulls ditch DeMar DeRozan and Patrick Williams in a five-player deal.

If the Chicago Bulls want to be a serious playoff threat in the Eastern Conference next season, they need to make some big changes. And while that may be the direction Arturas Karnisovas is determined to go in, it may be beneficial for the Bulls to explore potential teardown moves.

With DeMar DeRozan heading into the final year of his contract, trading him now for some sort of value could be a good idea. Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times believes Chicago should call up a team they made a blockbuster trade with just two years ago – the Orlando Magic. There could be a deal to be made.

Cowley suggested a trade that would send DeRozan and Patrick Williams to the Magic in exchange for some young assets, some role players, and a draft pick.

3 free agents Chicago Bulls could target to mentor Patrick Williams

As Patrick Williams continues to develop, here are three free agents the Chicago Bulls could target to help mentor him.

The Chicago Bulls have some tough choices to make this summer. And since Arturas Karnisovas has stated his desire to keep the current core together, but if that’s his plan, then he will need to improve the team around them. Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic are a solid group, but if they want a shot at consistently making the playoffs, they need help.

One of the most important members of the supporting cast is Patrick Williams. His defense and improving three-point shot are crucial. But at just 21 years old, he still has plenty of room to grow and improve.

So, as the Bulls are scoping out potential targets in free agency, they should consider signing players who could help mentor Williams. Here’s a list of three forwards who could do just that.

Patrick Williams’ improvement is ‘paramount’ to Chicago Bulls success

If the Chicago Bulls want to reach their ceiling, they need Patrick Williams to reach his.

When the season ended, Arturas Karnisovas made it clear that he has no intention of rebuilding the Chicago Bulls. Instead, he plans to run it back and make another playoff push next year. There’s always a chance he changes his mind this summer, but barring that, it seems as though most of last season’s Chicago squad will be back next year.

Obviously, the play of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic will be the most important, but other Bulls will have to step up, too. According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, however, Patrick Williams‘ improvement will also be crucial. The 21-year-old forward could be due for an increased role.

“Of the team’s younger players,” Smith wrote. “Patrick Williams has to have a bigger role next season. He upped his three-point shooting in both volume and percentage. Williams also improved his off-the-dribble game. This season is an opportunity for the team’s veterans to cede even more responsibility towards Williams, as his growth is paramount.”

Williams missed nearly all of his sophomore season due to injury, but even outside of that, he has failed to make significant improvements in his three-year career.

If the Bulls want to take things to the next level, they desperately need him to improve as a shooter and embrace a larger role. At the same time, Chicago needs to allow him room to grow.

The veterans on the roster should make it their mission next season to cultivate Williams’ growth, as the Bulls will only reach their ceiling if he does.

Chicago Bulls mock trade ditches Nikola Vucevic, Patrick Williams

In this mock trade, the Chicago Bulls would flip Patrick Williams and Nikola Vucevic for a big-time center upgrade.

This offseason could end up being a big one for the Chicago Bulls. Just two years after making some big-time moves in an attempt to move up the ladder in the Eastern Conference, the Bulls are nowhere close to where they want to be. Now, they could be looking at a new rebuild just a few years after they attempted to wrap up their previous one.

Trading one of DeMar DeRozan or Zach LaVine would be the logical place to start, but the Bulls also have a decision to make about big man Nikola Vucevic, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. While they could simply let him walk in free agency, the better option could be to explore sign-and-trade options.

One deal proposed by Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report would see Chicago sign and trade Vucevic to the Phoenix Suns and receive 24-year-old big man Deandre Ayton. However, the Bulls would also have to give up Patrick Williams in the trade.

Billy Donovan doesn’t rule out starting Patrick Williams vs. Raptors

Due to Toronto’s size, Patrick Williams could get his number called more on Wednesday.

The fate of the Chicago Bulls’ postseason hopes will be decided in Wednesday’s play-in game against the Toronto Raptors.

If Chicago wins, they’ll move on to play the loser of the matchup between the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. If the Bulls lose to the Raptors, their season is over.

One obstacle in playing the Raptors will be their size advantage, which Bulls coach Billy Donovan referenced following Friday’s win against the Dallas Mavericks.

“The biggest challenge that we’ve had against them is just their size,” Donovan said. “They play really, really big.”

Per K.C. Johnson of NBCS Chicago, Donovan spoke on the matchup with Toronto, which brought up the question whether the Bulls would consider starting Patrick Williams to give Chicago more size.

“I’m not opposed to that at all. Obviously, they’re all going to play,” Donovan said of potentially starting Williams. “I do think that they’re obviously a really big and physical team. And they’re one of the better rebounding teams in the league. But to be quite honest, I think some of our difficulties rebounding have had very little to do with size.”

Williams would add a lot more size on the glass and defensively but would take away from the starting unit with Patrick Beverley and Alex Caruso, which has played been one of the best defensive units since Beverley’s arrival.

“I think it’s been more the consistency of what you have to do, whether it be rotational boxouts or guys running to the rim. We could be bigger and still not rebound well enough. I think there are things technique-wise that we have to do to be better.”

Billy Donovan believes Patrick Williams can be a consistent double-digit rebounder

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan praised forward Patrick Williams’ performance and viewed him as a consistent double-digit rebounder.

The Chicago Bulls extended their winning streak to three games following Monday’s home victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The win places the team back into play-in contention as the tenth-ranked squad in the Eastern Conference.

A standout performance from forward Patrick Williams as he finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulls’ third-year player has recently shown improvement on the court as he battled on the glass all night. The exceptional play was lost on his head coach as Billy Donovan praised his performance during his post-game press conference with reporters.

“He’s really explosive with two feet. And when he gets in and makes those kinds of efforts to get on the backboard, he really is an elite rebounder, and we need him to do that. I think he ended up with whatever it was, 18 points and 10 rebounds, but he’s a guy that’s got to try to go get double-figure rebounds for us,” said Donovan. “I thought there were some opportunities for him offensively to drive it a little bit more. Where he may be settled a little bit, I think it’ll get better there. But overall, you can see his growth and his improvement over the course of the season.”

Williams was a lottery pick during the 2020 NBA draft after only one year at Florida State. He has progressed each year in adjusting to the pro-level speed and is committed to living up to his coach’s expectations as he responded to reporters after the game.

“Not necessarily talked about. But I think he’s pretty clear. That I can rebound the ball. I agree with him,” Williams said. “In terms of, I gotta be more consistent rebounds. I think we’re really good. When any of our wings grab a rebound, we can get up quicker. So I tell people, just put that on myself, accept the challenge.”

Williams will be essential to the Bulls’ success moving forward, as the team wants to finish the season’s first half on a high note.

Dosunmu, Williams are ‘with whatever to win’ despite demotion

Billy Donovan made the lineup change to ‘see what this looks like.’

In Friday’s loss to the Golden State Warriors, the Chicago Bulls starting lineup looked a little different.

Bulls coach Billy Donovan made a lineup change, sending both Ayo Dosunmu and Patrick Williams to the bench for Alex Caruso and Javonte Green.

“It was more to see, ‘Let’s see what this looks like,'” Donovan said following the 119-111 loss. “I’m always evaluating and you’re not trying to make a decision after two or three games. But I think there’s a pretty decent body of work for the number of games we played. And I just wanted to take a look at something different.”

Patrick Williams is confident he has ‘what it takes to be a star’

The Bulls’ forward is ‘100% locked in’ on becoming a better player.

The Chicago Bulls brought back the majority of their roster from last season with hopes of taking a leap past their first-round playoff loss.

As for taking an individual leap, Bulls forward Patrick Williams is confident in his growth as a player, which is a necessity for Chicago to ascend in the Eastern Conference.

Williams spoke to the media after Sunday’s practice on his progress this season.

“I told you I was going to figure it out. I think I’m still figuring it out. But I’m 100 percent locked in on being the player that I want to be,” Williams said following Sunday’s practice. “I always felt I had what it took to be a really good player in this league. But now I’m starting to feel like I have what it takes to be a star and a superstar in this league. I’m kind of trying to take that role on and build on it day-by-day.”

On media day, Bulls coach Billy Donovan said that the team needed Williams to ‘take another step’ for not just his own growth as a player but for the team to reach another level.

“I think it’s definitely a team effort. Guys have been telling me this since my rookie year and before that since high school and college. Kind of trying to take it in my own mind now and show that on the court,” Williams said.

Williams started the season off slow as he struggled with being aggressive on the offensive end, which led to Donovan opting to give more minutes to guys like Javonte Green. But, over the last nine games, Williams is averaging 11.2 points while shooting 50% from the floor and 56.7% from 3-point range.

“I think I started out in a slump, and I got myself out of that. Obviously, the coaching staff and talking to my teammates definitely helped. But I think I got myself out of that just mentally,” Williams said. “I know it hurts the team when I don’t play as well on either end. I’m pretty proud of myself just in terms of how I went about it. Tried to be the same guy each day I came in here and continued to talk to my teammates.”

With Williams’ confidence growing, the Bulls’ third-year forward could finally start reaching his potential.

Player Grades: Bulls fall as Fred VanVleet leads Raptors at home

The Chicago Bulls gave it their best shot without guard Zach LaVine, but it proved to be futile since Fred VanVleet had quite a night.

The Chicago Bulls took on the Toronto Raptors on Sunday at Scotiabank Arena and lost 113-104. Chicago got exceptional games out of big Nikola Vucevic (18 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists) and guard Alex Caruso (11 rebounds and 11 assists), but those efforts weren’t enough as Toronto guard Fred VanVleet put together a double-double of 30 points and 11 assists.

Chicago guard DeMar DeRozan had a good game considering that Toronto doubled him every time he touched the ball, especially on pick-and-rolls. Goran Dragic turned back the clock a bit to give the Bulls 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench while forward Patrick Williams had a good game despite struggling from the field.
