Patrick Surtain says if another team called he would’ve stayed with Dolphins

He has an affinity for the school.

The Miami Dolphins have lost a number of coaches this offseason, but defensive assistant Patrick Surtain’s departure was the only one that they didn’t have a part in.

Surtain left Miami Gardens in January to join the Florida State Seminoles’ coaching staff as their secondary coach. In three years, Surtain has jumped from high school head coach to NFL defensive assistant and now to positional coach at the college level.

However, it’s not that he was just looking to move on from the Dolphins. Speaking on if he would’ve left his position for another job, he was quite frank.

“Probably not,” Surtain said. “ It’s still the state of Florida. Like if Minnesota called me, I would stay with the Dolphins. If Washington or Washington State would’ve called, I would’ve stayed with the Dolphins.

“But Tallahassee, what, five hours away from home? With an iconic program like Florida State that’s getting back to the glory days, that was the perfect situation. So, lightning happened in the bottle twice with the Dolphins and then Florida State. I’m ready to leave my mark on the program.”

With defensive coordinator Josh Boyer getting fired after the Surtain news was reported, it’s unclear whether or not he would’ve been kept around on Vic Fangio’s staff, but it’s great to see the legendary cornerback continuing to develop in his coaching career.

At the rate he’s going, he’ll be a defensive coordinator soon.

FSU adds Patrick Surtain Sr. to coaching staff as DBs coach

PS2’s dad, Patrick Surtain Sr., will coach FSU’s defensive backs this fall.

Patrick Surtain Sr., father to Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, has been hired as the new defensive backs coach for the Florida State Seminoles, the university announced Wednesday.

Surtain Sr. is no stranger to the Sunshine State, having played as a Miami Dolphin for seven seasons.

The Surtain name is legendary in defensive back circles. Surtain Sr, was an 11-year NFL veteran, and from 2012-2021, coached several future NFL players at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. The elder Surtain coached six members of the 2021 NFL draft, among them his son, Surtain II, who was drafted by the Broncos ninth overall in 2021.

After seven years at the high school level, Surtain Sr. served as a defensive assistant with the Dolphins in 2022.

“I’m incredibly excited to have Patrick Surtain joining the Nole Family,” Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience at the highest levels and has prioritized genuine relationships and developing players on and off the field.

“Patrick was an elite NFL player for more than a decade and then earned remarkable success as a high school coach in South Florida before continuing his development as an NFL coach. I’m happy for our student-athletes who will receive top-notch skills instruction while also learning life lessons from Coach Surtain.”

Florida State is coming off a 10-3 season in 2022, including a 35-32 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Cheez-It Bowl.

Patrick Surtain Sr. joins Dolphins’ coaching staff

Patrick Surtain’s son plays cornerback for the Broncos. Denver will face the Dolphins in Miami in 2023.

Patrick Surtain Sr., the father of Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, will join the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff as an assistant coach, according to a report from Andy Slater of Fox Sports 640 (via Dolphins Wire).

Surtain, 45, will presumably be the team’s assistant defensive backs coach. He spent the first seven years of his career in Miami after being selected by the Dolphins in the second round of the 1998 NFL draft out of Southern Miss.

The elder Surtain was a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro during his 11-year career, totaling 37 interceptions and 105 pass breakups. Surtain has been a head football coach at the high school level since 2016.

Surtain’s son was selected by the Broncos in the first round of last year’s NFL draft out of Alabama. The younger Surtain earned Pro Bowl first-alternate honors as a rookie in 2021 after breaking up 14 passes and totaling four interceptions, including a 70-yard pick-six.

Miami is not on Denver’s list of opponents in 2022, but the Broncos are scheduled to face the Dolphins on the road in 2023.

Patrick Surtain Sr. shares his thoughts on Brian Flores and Tua Tagovailoa

The past gives his opinion on the present.

In the third year of the Brian Flores era, the Miami Dolphins struggled mightily through the first half of the season before adjusting and re-establishing their winning ways.

Those first eight games had a lot of people questioning Flores’ future as well as the future of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. With the team losing games and rumors swirling daily about Deshaun Watson, fans and media alike were left to wonder if the two men who were leading the team would be around much longer.

Through all of this, everyone has shared their opinion on the pair, including former Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain who was asked to give his thoughts about the coach and quarterback in an interview with Time2Play.

“I’m a Tua fan,” Surtain said of Tagovailoa. “I’m a little biased with our Alabama connection. I’ve seen this kid do it, he has some unique traits. He might not have the strongest arm, but his anticipation is amazing. He needs his core receivers back, he hasn’t had his full unit around him in two years. The Dolphins want to see that too before making a long-term decision on him. He has a great work ethic and I’m a big fan.”

This past week against the Giants was just the third game this year that Tagovailoa, DeVante Parker, and Jaylen Waddle all played a majority of the game, and they won two of them. Surtain seems to have similar feelings to a lot of Dolphins fans on the quarterback, and he seems to be a fan of the coach as well.

“I think he’s the man to lead them forward,” Surtain said about Flores. “This is such a fickle business. You can win 10 games one year, and if you fall below those standards the next year you’re gone. I think they need a big-time running back, keep those receivers fit and healthy. They have to keep pushing- the main thing is stability and the ownership should give him a chance. Give him a couple years to get things together.”

In three seasons, Brian Flores has a 21-24 record, but he seems to get a lot out of players. From what they’ve said in interviews and press conferences, everyone in the building loves playing for the guy. If the Dolphins give him time, Flores can be a good coach in the league. And, if he has the support of a Dolphins legend, he must be doing something right.

Former Dolphins CB Patrick Surtain honored for high school coaching

Former Dolphins CB Patrick Surtain honored for high school coaching

Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain knows plenty about success on the gridiron. Surtain logged 37 interceptions to go along with three Pro Bowls and one All-Pro honor over the course of an 11-season career between Miami and Kansas City. Surtain cut his teeth in the league with the Dolphins in the late 1990s and by the turn of the millennium, Surtain was one of the most dangerous cornerbacks in football.

Surtain may have been comfortably retired, but he’s seeing plenty of success on the gridiron all the same. His son, Patrick Surtain Jr, is expected to become a 1st-round draft selection in this year’s NFL Draft after a successful career with the Alabama Crimson Tide. And the elder Surtain has filled the void lost by retirement by coaching high school football. And he’s been named High School Football America’s High School Coach of the Year for his work in 2020.

Surtain’s American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida won the Florida 5A championship in December by a score of 24-6. It’s the latest in a continuation of dominance for Surtain’s program, which is 58-6 since he took over in 2016. What makes Surtain’s run and success at American Heritage so much fun for Dolphins fans? Surtain isn’t the only former Dolphin on the staff — former receiver Oronde Gadsden and former linebacker Anthony Harris are also featured on staff.

So perhaps a road trip is in order for long-time Dolphins fans — pick a weekend this fall and make the trip to Plantation to see Surtain’s NFL-loaded coaching staff continue to build a dynasty at American Heritage.
