John Harbaugh lacks hindsight & Patrick Queen might laugh last: Steelers lead AFC North

Baltimore Ravens HC John Harbaugh is losing ground to the Pittsburgh Steelers and LB Patrick Queen is reaping greatly.

It’s happening again: the Baltimore Ravens are jeopardizing an opportunity to stay ahead in the AFC by losing games that they quite frankly shouldn’t.

Still, Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh isn’t discontent, and he had this to say after Sunday’s 29-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns:

…you’re not going to win every game, we didn’t make the calls… we didn’t make the plays…

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen has to feel good knowing he left the Ravens last season for higher pay and a new head coach in Mike Tomlin, who is not content with losing.

With the possibility of injury, that is, the reality that no player is physically immortal, Queen knows that he doesn’t want to waste the prime of his NFL career playing under a “we’ll get them next time” type of head coach.

Respectfully, Harbaugh has had a hall-of-fame NFL career, but Queen did not get to share Harbaugh’s Super Bowl glory back in 2013 because he was still in high school. Queen did, however, share the excruciating AFC Championship loss earlier this year with Harbaugh as his coach.

Queen’s Steelers are 6-2, thriving under the leadership of all-pro T.J. Watt and the poise of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. Queen has played his role within a Steelers defense that ranks No. 2 in opponent points per game.

On defense, the Ravens have clearly taken a step backward since Queen’s departure, and this flaw might be pivotal late in the NFL season when the premiere teams will appear. Whether bittersweet or not, Queen is having the last laugh.

Ravens linebacker Trenton Simpson lands a spot on the PFF 2024 All-Breakout team

Ravens second year linebacker Trenton Simpson makes the Pro Football Focus 2024 All-Breakout Team

The Ravens are stacked at several key positions on both sides of the football, but the weak-side linebacker spot opposite Roquan Smith will be most critical to success this coming season. Baltimore has an All-Pro or Pro Bowler at every level of the defense, but it’ll be the player replacing Patrick Queen who will face the most pressure.

Pro Football Focus released their 2024 all-breakout team, and Simpson made a list as linebacker.

Simpson improved daily as a rookie playing behind Roquan Smith and Queen at the inside linebacker spot. He offered the ultimate preview of his potential in the season finale against Pittsburgh, logging seven tackles and one sack on 26 snaps played.

Former Ravens LB Patrick Queen on signing with Steelers: ‘Better atmosphere for me’

Patrick Queen says Pittsburgh offers a better atmosphere for him to flourish

Patrick Queen is one of the best trash talkers in the NFL, and he’s already set the scene and written the script for two intense matchups between the Ravens and Steelers.

Queen bet on himself in 2023 and departed Baltimore for a three-year, $41 million deal that made him the fifth highest-paid inside linebacker behind former teammate Roquan Smith ($20 million), San Francisco’s Fred Warner ($19 million), Chicago’s Tremaine Edmunds ($18 million) and Buffalo’s Matt Milano ($14.2 million).

Queen is catching flak for recent comments he made to The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly in which he described everything he likes about Pittsburgh more than Baltimore.

“I don’t care … it’s the truth,” Queen said. “I am not saying anything bad about them. I am just speaking the truth.”

“It was a no-brainer,” Queen said of joining the Steelers. “At the end of the day, money makes you happy, but you also have to win to be happy. I’d rather win and be happy than be miserable with a lot of money. It’s a better atmosphere here for me. Everybody is cool, the people are cool, the players are cool and the food spots are better. I am a big food guy. I love food. I am more of a true food guy rather than a seafood guy. I like meat and stuff like that. It’s just a better atmosphere for me here.”

Queen has not missed a game in his four NFL seasons, making 67 starts and totaling 454 tackles and 13.5 sacks with one Pro Bowl selection. He’ll now step into the center of arguably the NFL’s most intense and most physical rivalry.
