Notre Dame men’s athletics win third Capital One Cup

Congrats, Notre Dame!

The Capital One Cup demonstrates greatness of a university’s athletic department. Each year, it is given out on both the men’s and women’s side. Notre Dame has captured the men’s award for the second time in three years and third time overall. Former lacrosse player [autotag]Pat Kavanaugh[/autotag] was on hand at this year’s ESPYS to acknowledge the victory:

At 103 points, Notre Dame finished well ahead of second-place Michigan (90 points) in the men’s standings. The national-championship lacrosse team got the most points with 60. The soccer team, the College Cup runner-up, earned 30 points, and the fencing team, another national-championship runner-up, got six points. Rounding out the scoring was the swimming and diving team, which earned a single point for playing 10th at the national meet.

This should serve as a reminder that although football is Notre Dame’s biggest sport by far, the university strives for athletic success across the board. Congratulations to the programs that made this honor possible.

Three Notre Dame lacrosse players make Lacrosse Network’s Dream Team

Congrats to the trio of Irish recipients

Fresh off defending its National Championship, Notre Dame lacrosse players were bound for more recognition.

That’s exactly what happened on Thursday afternoon, as The Lacrosse Network announced its inaugural Dream Team. Three Notre Dame players made the list: goalie [autotag]Liam Entenmann[/autotag], midfielder [autotag]Jordan Faison[/autotag] and attacker [autotag]Pat Kavanagh[/autotag].

It should come as no surprise that the three were honored, as they led the Irish’s charge all year long. Kavanagh’s list of accolades just increased, as he was already the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, a first-team All-American, won the programs first Tewaaraton Award while setting the Notre Dame career points and assists records.

Congrats to the three Irish stars on a massively successful season.

Notre Dame’s Pat Kavanagh Wins Lacrosse’s Biggest Individual Award

College lacrosse’s biggest individual honor goes to…

Notre Dame wrapped up one of the very best seasons in the history of college lacrosse Monday as the Fighting Irish dominated Maryland 15-5 and won their second-straight national championship.

The hardware kept coming for Notre Dame as the week went on however as on Thursday it was announced that attackman Pat Kavanagh was this year’s winner of the most coveted individual honor in the sport, the Tewaaraton Award.

The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.

Joining Kavanagh as a finalist was Notre Dame teammate and goaltender Liam Entenmann as well as Matthew Brandeau (Yale), Brennan O’Neill (Duke) and Connor Shellenberger (Virginia).

This was Entenmann’s second time being a finalist and the third time for Kavanagh.

Kavanagh scored an astounding 80 points with season with 20 of those coming in the postseason en-route to Notre Dame’s second straight national championship.

Kavanagh is the first player in Notre Dame history to take home the award after becoming the seventh Fighting Irish player to be named a finalist.

Best Photos of Notre Dame’s Lacrosse Championship Win Over Maryland

The party is on in South Bend!

Notre Dame had been a very successful men’s lacrosse program for years but was unable to reach the sport’s peak until last May when they won their first national championship.

Fast forward a year and the Fighting Irish are back on top after dominating their way to a second-straight national championship.  Notre Dame overcame a slow start in Monday’s championship against Maryland where they trailed 2-0 early on.

The Irish went on an incredible run however, outscoring the Terrapins 15-3 the rest of the way en-route to that second-straight national championship.

We’ve had reaction from much of the Notre Dame community following the win here at Fighting Irish Wire but would like to share the best photos from Sunday’s dominating win below.

Pat McAfee Congratulates Notre Dame Lacrosse for Repeat Championship

Friends of the Progrum

Notre Dame men’s lacrosse earned their second-straight national championship that culminated Monday with a 15-5 a domination of Maryland in the national championship game.

Despite falling behind 2-0 early, Notre Dame quickly bounced back and made things rather uninteresting shortly after.  The win was expected entering the tournament after Notre Dame lost just one game all year.  They avenged that loss in the national quarterfinals when they beat Georgetown which led to their blowout victories over Denver and Maryland.

Former Indianapolis Colts punter and current national talk show host [autotag]Pat McAfee[/autotag] has been a supporter of the Notre Dame lacrosse program for the last year or so when he learned of the Kavanagh brothers.  He took a moment on Tuesday to look back to his visit with the team last fall which included a great one-liner from Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan.

Check out the video below.

Pat McAfee has done many things (NFL player, WWE performer, College Gameday host, husband, and father, and more) but we don’t think star lacrosse player will be added to that list anytime soon.

Regardless, some national love from a major player in sports media for a team that certainly earned it over the past two years.

Notre Dame Overcomes Slow Start, Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

Moving On!

The No. 1 seeded Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team didn’t play their best half to start Sunday’s matchup with Albany but in the end were able to overcome it and advance to next week’s national quarterfinal.

Trailing 5-4 at halftime, Notre Dame came out playing more like the top-seed on their home field, scoring the first four goals of the second half to take an 8-5 advantage, eventually cruising to a 14-9 victory.

Pat and Chris Kavanagh led the way for Notre Dame, scoring five points each in what wound up being a 14-9 victory.  Pat had three goals and a pair of assists while Chris scored one goal and had four helpers.

Devon McLane and Jake Taylor both had hat tricks for the Fighting Irish with McLane actually netting four goals.

Will Lynch was ferocious for Notre Dame in the faceoff circle, winning 18-of-26 draws on the afternoon.

Notre Dame now advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals next weekend on Long Island where they’ll take on No. 8 Georgetown, the only team to beat the Irish this season.

College Lacrosse – No. 1 Notre Dame Wins at No. 3 Duke

A huge road win for the Irish!

It was a rematch of last year’s national championship lacrosse game and again between a pair of the nation’s top-ranked teams on Sunday.  No. 1 Notre Dame traveled to No. 3 Duke in a showdown that lived up to the billing.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead, scoring the game’s first goal before exchanging the next pair with the Blue Devils to hold a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Fighting Irish head to halftime on a scoring spree.  After allowing two Duke goals to open the period, Notre Dame scored five-straight to hold an 8-4 halftime edge.  The Brothers Kavanagh, Chris and Pat, each scored a pair of goals during that 5-0 run.

Duke scored early in the second to get back within three before the two teams matched the final portion of the third quarter which ended with Notre Dame holding a 10-7 lead.

The first part of the fourth quarter belonged to the Devils as they struck fast to score four goals while allowing just one, tying the game at 11 with 9:09 to play.  It’s one thing to give up a lead, it’s another to fall behind, and Notre Dame never did that keeping things at least tied.

From there the Irish outscored Duke 3-1 to close the contest and win 14-12.

Pat Kavanagh led the Irish with four goals and three assists while Chris Kavanagh also scored four goals while assisting one.

As is the norm, Notre Dame goaltender Liam Entenmann was great, stopping 14 Duke shots in the win.

Notre Dame returns to action next weekend when they travel to Cornell.

College Lacrosse: No. 1 Notre Dame upset at home

Tough one on banner day at Notre Dame…

The reigning national champions won’t have to worry about the pressure of a perfect season in 2024 as the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team fell at home in overtime to No. 19 Georgetown on Sunday, 11-10.

Georgetown got things started early, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after one period of play.  From there it out it was a back and forth battle that Notre Dame could never quite get ahold of.

Jeffery Ricciardelli took a feed from Pat Kavanagh to put the Irish ahead 9-8 with 8:41 left in regulation but Georgetown would answer with a pair of goals themselves to retake the lead.

Kavanagh would tie things up late in regulation, forcing overtime but Georgetown was able to stop Notre Dame’s first possession and land the game-winning goal from Aidan Carroll on their first overtime possession.

Notre Dame falls to 2-1 on the young season and returns to action at home against next weekend when they welcome No. 4 Maryland to town.

College Lacrosse: No. 1 Notre Dame Accomplishes Program First in Obliterating Marquette

A dominating showing by the nation’s top-ranked team!

A program first for the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team occurred Sunday when they dismantled Marquette in Milwaukee.  The 21-8 Notre Dame victory marked the first time in program history the Irish scored 20 goals in consecutive games.

The Brothers Kavanagh as they’ll forever be known here did what they do, putting on an absolute clinic.  Chris Kavanagh scored four goals while dishing out three assists and Pat Kavanagh added two scores and five helpers in the win.

Jake Taylor continued his fast start to 2024, scoring four more times, bringing his total to nine through two games.

Devon McLane added a hat trick for the top-ranked Golden Domers while Eric Dobson and Jordan Faison both netted a pair of goals.

Notre Dame sits 2-0 on the young season now and returns home next Sunday to welcome Georgetown in a 2 p.m. ET start.

Quite the last few days for Pat

Former NFL punter [autotag]Pat McAfee[/autotag] was already a big deal in the media, especially since signing a big contract with ESPN, but he was a bigger deal to [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] lacrosse today.

McAfee has a massive platform and for him to invite Irish star lacrosse player [autotag]Pat Kavanagh[/autotag] onto the show is a big deal. The Notre Dame National Champion joined the Pat McAfee Show today to discuss his feelings towards bringing home the hardware to South Bend.

Take a look below at McAfee’s introduction of Kavanagh and the first few questions asked during the interview. You can also watch the full interview here. (Warning: there is some explicit language so please be careful).
