Halftime analysis: Panthers trail Saints 16-7

The Panthers trail the Saints 16-7 at halftime of their last game of the season.

The pain is almost over. The Panthers trail the Saints 16-7 at halftime of their last game of the season.

Here’s a recap of what’s happened so far.

Offense

The slide for QB Teddy Bridgewater continues. Carolina’s first possession once again ended with Bridgewater taking a sack. Now he’s added a new trick: muffing handoffs to the running back. In addition to those errors, Bridgewater is just 11/19 passing for 124 yards and one interception – and he’s lucky he doesn’t have three already. The Panthers’ run game has been weak, as well. The team has just 32 yards on 13 carries. Once again, WR/RB Curtis Samuel is the only standout offensively. So far, he has caught six passes, totaling 95 yards.

Defense

Carolina will be fortunate if this is the last time they face Drew Brees, who has taken a couple of sacks (one each for Tre Boston and Efe Obada) but is still operating the Saints’ offense efficiently. At the half, he’s 13/16 for 114 yards, two touchdowns and a 135.9 passer rating. Having Brian Burns out there might have helped, but likely not much.

Special teams

Joey Slye is still not getting chances on fourth down, which doesn’t bode well for his future in Carolina. Meanwhile, the reigning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week Joseph Charlton is averaging 45 yards per punt.

The Saints receive the kick to begin the third quarter.

Experts all picking Saints over Panthers for Week 17 matchup

As you might expect, the experts are all taking New Orleans for this Week 17 matchup.

The Carolina Panthers (5-10) finish their 2020 season on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints (11-4).

As you might expect, the experts are all taking New Orleans for this Week 17 matchup. Here’s who they’re picking.

ESPN: Saints

To begin, New Orleans swept all nine picks at ESPN.

MMQB: Saints

They took all six picks at the MMQB, as well.

USA TODAY: Saints

Same story, here. New Orleans took all seven.

CBS Sports: Saints

This morning Jonathan Jones also picked the Saints.

Sporting News: Saints

Vinnie Iyer made this his lock of the week, predicting a 34-17 Saints win.

Pro Football Talk: Saints

Michael David Smith (28-17) and Mike Florio (31-17) also picked against the Panthers.

Last week was an interesting and difficult matchup to predict. This one is relatively straight-forward. New Orleans is a vastly more talented team and has a potential No. 1 seed in the NFC on the line. Carolina’s defense has been exceptional the last two games though, so we’d be surprised if it’s a blowout. Saints 24, Panthers 17.

Panthers open 6.5-point underdogs for Week 17 game vs. Saints

According to the latest odds at BetMGM, the Panthers are 6.5-point underdogs against the Saints for this matchup.

There’s only one game left to play for the Carolina Panthers this season. They will close out the 2020 campaign at home against the New Orleans Saints, who just clinched their fourth-straight NFC South championship. As expected, New Orleans is a heavy favorite heading into Week 17. According to the latest odds at BetMGM, the Panthers are 6.5-point underdogs against the Saints for this matchup.

New Orleans is coming off a convincing Christmas Day revenge game against the Minnesota Vikings. Alvin Kamara rolled behind a dominant offensive line, scoring six rushing touchdowns in a 52-33 victory. That brings their record on the season to 11-4, one game behind the Green Bay Packers for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Meanwhile, Carolina just beat the Washington Football Team, improving to 5-10 in the process. They lost earlier in the season to New Orleans, though. If they somehow manage to win this time, they’ll match our preseason 6-10 prediction.

Halftime analysis: Panthers trail Saints 21-17

The Panthers briefly held a lead over the Saints but gave up a touchdown with one second to go in the second quarter

The Panthers briefly held a lead over the Saints but gave up a touchdown with one second to go in the second quarter. They trail 21-17 at halftime.

Here’s a review of how things have gone so far.

Offense:

Teddy Bridgewater is getting a bit of a revenge game against his former team. He’s hooked up with Curtis Samuel and D.J. Moore for big gains, including a 74-yard touchdown for the latter. Bridgewater is 11/13 for 170 yards, two touchdowns and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. By comparison, the run game has been a dud. Mike Davis has managed just five yards on five carries. The Panthers’ passing attack has been strong enough to make this irrelevant, though.

Defense:

As usual, things are less rosy on this side of the ball. The Saints have moved the chains effortlessly, rolling over a mistake-fest of an effort by Carolina. Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray have already combined for 105 rushing yards and New Orleans is averaging 6.6 yards per carry. Brian Burns came through with a huge hit and forced fumble late in the half though – that helped put the Panthers in position for Moore’s second touchdown. They’ll need to come up with an answer for wide receiver Marquez Callaway, who leads the Saints with 56 yards on five catches.

Special teams:

Joey Slye continues to come through when the offense stalls out in the red zone. He’s made a 43-yard field goal and is 2/2 on extra points.

The Panthers will receive the kick to begin the second half.

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey preparing to play whole game vs. Saints

Heading into Week 17, McCaffrey needs just 67 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the season.

The Panthers play their last game of the year on Sunday against the Saints. Despite playing on the road, New Orleans is favored to win by 12.5 points. That might scare off some Carolina fans who have gotten tired of seeing their team lose during this seven-game losing streak. However, if there’s one reason to watch it’s the potential for Christian McCaffrey to break some records.

Heading into Week 17, McCaffrey needs just 67 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the season, which would make him just the third player in NFL history to reach 1,000 receiving yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a year. McCaffrey says he’s preparing to play the entire game and coaches have not said anything about his workload.

For what it’s worth, McCaffrey’s workload is a little concerning. So far, he’s played 1,005 offensive snaps, or 94.8% of the team’s total. History says that running backs who have special statistical seasons like this one tend to never reach those same numbers again.

The Panthers may have a unicorn in McCaffrey, though. Riding him as long as they can makes sense for an interim head coach who is trying his best to win games, despite what it might mean for draft position.

Whether it’s Perry Fewell or somebody else, whoever the next head coach is has to think long and hard about the potential of running McCaffrey into the ground. For now, sit back and enjoy the show.

Watch: Panthers S Eric Reid talks about playing spoiler for Saints

Watch safety Eric Reid talk about potentially playing the spoiler this week.

Last year, the Panthers scored a consolation prize victory Week 17 against a Saints team that was resting its stars for the playoffs. This year, Carolina is carrying another long losing streak (currently seven games) into the last week of the season. Their chances of upsetting New Orleans are not good. The Saints opened as 12.5-point favorites despite playing on the road.

As daunting as that sounds, the Panthers were able to compete with their division rivals earlier this season, losing by three points in New Orleans thanks to some kicker issues. Watch safety Eric Reid talk about potentially playing the spoiler this week.

Reid hasn’t been bad exactly but he’s played an unexceptional season.

Like the rest of Carolina’s secondary he has made too many mistakes in coverage, allowing explosive plays. Reid posted a season-high 11 solo tackles Week 12 against the Saints and he has a career-high 118 total so far but that’s more a sign of the first two levels of the defense not making stops rather than Reid doing something special.

Reid still has two more years left on the contract extension he signed in February.

Panthers open 12.5-point underdogs vs. Saints for Week 17 matchup

New Orleans has won six of the last eight meetings between these teams, and Kyle Allen’s 2018 victory should come with an asterisk.

The pain will soon be over, Panthers fans. There’s only one game left in the 2019 season. Don’t expect any moral victories this time around, though. Last year, the Saints rested their most important players with a top seed already locked up in Week 17. This time, they’re still fighting for playoff position and will be playing Drew Brees and everybody else that matters.

That means Carolina is in for another whooping, fresh off a 38-6 collapse against a far inferior Colts team, at least compared to New Orleans. According to BetMGM, the Saints are considered 12.5-point favorites for this week’s season finale.

The Panthers made things interesting when these teams played at the Superdome earlier in the year. Unfortunately, three short-range misses by rookie kicker Joey Slye cost them the game.

New Orleans has won six of the last eight meetings between these teams, and Kyle Allen’s 2018 victory should come with an asterisk.
