Panthers Week 10 injury report: 4 players out, 4 limited on Wednesday

The Carolina Panthers have been playing banged up most of the season. Why should Week 10 be any different?

The Carolina Panthers have been playing banged up most of the season. Why should Week 10 be any different? Star running back Christian McCaffrey and three other players did not participate in today’s practice, while four others were limited.

Here is your first look at this week’s injury report.

McCaffrey hasn’t officially been ruled out yet, but all signs point to that being the case this week. Coach Matt Rhule told reporters he has an AC joint issue and probably won’t play. He said that he considers McCaffrey week-to-week.

Russell Okung and Jeremy Chinn are the other critical names to watch.

While Okung has blocked at a high level when he’s been out there, the left tackle situation has been a revolving door all year due to his ongoing injury problems. Okung has now missed four of the team’s nine games. Greg Little, Trent Scott and Dennis Daley have all tried their hand and nobody has performed well consistently as of yet.

Chinn is of course the team’s most versatile and important defensive playmaker. He lines up all over the field and covers a ton of ground. The Panthers missed him sorely in Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs, especially when they were having trouble covering tight end Travis Kelce – who could not be contained and posted a game-high 159 receiving yards.

Panthers injury updates: Jeremy Chinn, 2 others questionable vs. Chiefs

Even though he was upgraded on Thursday, Chinn is one of three players who have been listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

The big question for the Panthers this week is whether or not the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Month Jeremy Chinn will be able to play against the Chiefs. It sounds like we may have to wait until 90 minutes before kickoff to find out. Even though he was upgraded on Thursday, Chinn is one of three players who have been listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Here is the team’s complete Week 9 injury report.

If starter Russell Okung is ruled out again, the Panthers will likely rely on a rotation of Trent Scott and Greg Little at left tackle. Neither has proven consistent enough to lock down the job as of yet.

As for Zach Kerr, last week rookie Bravvion Roy started in his place next to Derrick Brown. That would likely continue if Kerr is unavailable.

Replacing Chinn is far more difficult, though. Defensive coordinator Phil Snow told reporters that it will be a committee approach if Chinn can’t play.

Panthers injury updates: Jeremy Chinn upgraded on Thursday

The Panthers need every bit of help they can get against the Chiefs this week.

The Panthers need every bit of help they can get against the Chiefs this week. That’s why Jeremy Chinn’s presence on the injury report is so concerning. Chinn sat out Wednesday’s practice, but he was upgraded to a limited participant today.

If Chinn can’t play, the Panthers will take a by-committee approach to replacing the multiple roles he fills defensively.

Starting left tackle Russell Okung remains a limited participant due to his calf injury. Carolina will also need him in the lineup to help contain Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark.

Panthers Week 9 injury report: Jeremy Chinn misses first practice

Standout rookie defender Jeremy Chinn did not participate due to a knee injury.

The Carolina Panthers got Christian McCaffrey back in full swing at practice today. Because this is 2020, there had to be a catch. Standout rookie defender Jeremy Chinn did not participate due to a knee injury. Three others were limited.

If Chinn can’t play, it would obviously be a huge blow for the Panthers defense. His versatility and range have made him the most indispensable piece for this unit. Facing the Chiefs without Chinn could lead to the biggest blowout of the year. Coach Matt Rhule told reporters today doing so would not fall on one player but would require multiple guys filling different roles.

Panthers Week 8 injury report: 2 offensive linemen DNP at first practice

Here is your first look at this week’s injury report.

The Panthers are on a short week as they prepare for the Falcons in their only primetime game of the 2020 season on Thursday night.

Okung and Miller represent two starting offensive linemen potentially being ruled out. On Sunday against the Saints, Dennis Daley started at right guard in Miller’s place and Greg Little came in when Okung went down. While Little did well at left tackle, Daley eventually got benched for Trent Scott.

In related news, running back Christian McCaffrey was spotted wearing a red no-contact jersey, but that he was spotted at all indicates he’s getting close to returning. He is still considered a long shot to play this week, though and he has not been activated from injured reserve as of yet.

Losing Douglas would be a massive blow, as he’s been the team’s best cornerback this season.

While this doesn’t look too bad on the surface, it also doesn’t represent just how shorthanded the team is right now.

Christian McCaffrey, Yetur Gross-Matos and Juston Burris are all on the injured reserve list, Kawann Short and Keith Kirkwood are out for the season and four players are on the team’s growing reserve/COVID-19 list, including two offensive linemen and kicker Joey Slye. Carolina has brought in three free agent kickers to compete for his spot if Slye can’t play against the Saints.

Panthers Week 6 injury report: Brian Burns, Yetur Gross-Matos miss first practice

Here is your first look at the team’s Week 6 injury report.

The Carolina Panthers’ atrocious luck with injuries this season continues, especially around the line of scrimmage. Three starting defensive linemen did not participate in today’s practice and one is done for the year.

Short’s shoulder injury will require surgery, so his 2020 season is over. Hopefully KK’s luck changes. However, it’s starting to look like his NFL career is going to be dominated by injury issues as it winds down. He missed 14 games last season and has played less than 200 defensive snaps since the start of 2019.

This setback for Gross-Matos is also pretty disheartening. After a difficult start to the season, the second-round pick had come on strong the last couple of games, racking up multiple pressures.

Burns’ injury is of course the scariest. As this franchise learned the hard way with Luke Kuechly, concussions can be far more damaging long-term than just forcing a key player out for a couple of weeks. Burns will be a foundational defensive piece for the Matt Rhule era, but only if he can stay healthy.

One spot the team is thin at is running back with Christian McCaffrey and Reggie Bonnafon both on injured reserve. Coach Matt Rhule just told reporters that Trenton Cannon and fullback Alex Armah will be backing up Mike Davis this week.

As for cornerback, Donte Jackson and Rasul Douglas should continue starting at the outside positions.

It seems that former Saints corner Eli Apple is a bit snakebitten right now. Fortunately for the Panthers, cornerback has been a surprise strength for their defense. Even playing hurt, Donte Jackson is having the best season of his career and Rasul Douglas has been their best defender outside of Brian Burns.
