Carolina Panthers: Updated depth chart projection after the 2021 NFL draft

Here’s our updated depth chart projection after the draft.

One month before the 2021 NFL draft, we shared a projected depth chart for the Panthers. Safe to say it’s now completely useless following a quarterback trade, several free agent pickups and the largest rookie class coming in since 1995.

Let’s try again and see where all the new pieces might fit. Here’s our updated depth chart projection after the draft.

Offense

QB Sam Darnold P.J. Walker Tommy Stevens Will Grier Peyton Ramsey
RB Christian McCaffrey Chuba Hubbard Reggie Bonnafon Trenton Cannon Rodney Smith Darius Clark Spencer Brown
FB Mikey Daniel Mason Stokke
WR D.J. Moore Robby Anderson Terrace Marshall David Moore Shi Smith Keith Kirkwood Brandon Zylstra
WR (cont.) Omar Bayless Micah Simon Marken Michel Ventell Bryant Ishmael Hyman
TE Dan Arnold Tommy Tremble Ian Thomas Colin Thompson Stephen Sullivan Giovanni Ricci
LT Brady Christensen Trent Scott Cameron Erving Greg Little
LG Pat Elflein Dennis Daley
C Matt Paradis Sam Tecklenburg David Moore
RG Deonte Brown John Miller Mike Horton
RT Taylor Moton Matt Kaskey Aaron Monteiro Martez Ivey

The big question here is do the Panthers see Christensen as a left tackle at this level, and if so how long will it take him to supplant the veterans on the roster? Our guess is he won’t start right away but eventually will become LT1, hence the projection.

Defense

DE Brian Burns Morgan Fox Marquis Haynes
DT DaQuan Jones Bravvion Roy Daviyon Nixon P.J. Johnson
DT Derrick Brown Mike Panasiuk Phil Hoskins
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Christian Miller Austin Larkin Frank Herron
OLB Shaq Thompson Clay Johnston Daniel Bituli
MLB Denzel Perryman Jermaine Carter Paddy Fisher
OLB Haason Reddick Frankie Luvu Chris Orr
LCB Donte Jackson Rashaan Melvin Stantley Thomas-Oliver III Keith Taylor
RCB Jaycee Horn A.J. Bouye Jalen Julius
SCB Troy Pride Jr.
SS Jeremy Chinn Sam Franklin Myles Hartsfield J.T. Ibe
FS Juston Burris Sean Chandler Kenny Robinson

On this side of the ball, Carolina added a lot more depth to the interior of the defensive line, making it much easier to project who will go where. We still have major questions about who will play slot and free safety, though.

Competition is the name of the game here, with each specialist from 2020 having to deal with another player at their respective positions. As far as the return game goes, these are only wild guesses at this point and the answers may not be on the roster.

Panthers projected depth chart 1 month before the 2021 NFL draft

Here’s how things are shaping up in all three phases of the game with one month to go before the draft.

The Carolina Panthers have made a series of bargain-shopping free agent pickups over the last few weeks. Yet, they still head into the month of April with an imbalanced, as-yet incompete roster and there’s still a lot of work to be done before the season begins.

To get a better idea of the team’s positional needs as we transition towards the 2021 NFL draft, we created a best guess depth chart using the players that are currently on the roster. Here’s how things are shaping up in all three phases of the game with one month to go before the draft.

Panthers projected depth chart after the 2020 NFL draft

The last time we published a projected 2020 depth chart for the Panthers, it was a mess. There were massive holes at guard, cornerback and along the defensive line. Now that the NFL draft is over, things are much clearer.  In addition to an all-defense draft class, the team has signed 17 undrafted free agents and a few veterans to help round out the roster.

Here is our best guess at what the depth chart looks like right now.

Panthers projected 2020 depth chart after 1 week of free agency

The Panthers have had another tumultuous offseason so far.

The Panthers have had another tumultuous offseason so far. With new coach Matt Rhule coming in, the roster is being rebuilt or retooled, depending on how you want to describe it. With Cam Newton expected to be released or traded any day now, the team has a new projected starting quarterback and several other new faces.

There’s a lot of time left to finish filling out this 2020 team, so this is not meant to be a complete depth chart, but here’s our best educated guess as to what it looks like right now.

Offense

QB Teddy Bridgewater P.J. Walker Will Grier
RB Christian McCaffrey Reggie Bonnafon Jordan Scarlett Mike Davis Marcus Murphy
WR D.J. Moore Curtis Samuel Seth Roberts Keith Kirkwood Pharoh Cooper Brandon Zylstra Damion Jeanpiere Ishmael Hyman
TE Ian Thomas Chris Manhertz Seth DeValve Temarrick Hemingway
LT Russell Okung Greg Little
LG Dennis Daley
C Matt Paradis Tyler Larsen Chris Reed
RG John Miller
RT Taylor Moton Tyler Marz Matt Kaskey Aaron Monteiro
FB Alex Armah

The big holes on offense are at the guard positions. Only Miller is an obvious starter given his level of experience at right guard. Daley put in some time at left guard as a rookie but he’s still very much a work in progress. If nothing else, the Panthers need to add more interior depth in the remaining weeks of free agency and the draft.

Defense

RDE Brian Burns Marquis Haynes Christian Miller
LDE Stephen Weatherly Chris Smith Efe Obada
DT Kawann Short Woodrow Hamilton
MLB Shaq Thompson Andre Smith
ROLB Tahir Whitehead Sione Teuhema
LOLB Jermaine Carter Jr. Jordan Kunaszyk
RCB Cole Luke
LCB Donte Jackson Dominique Hatfield
SCB Corn Elder
SS Juston Burris T.J. Green Natrell Jamerson
FS Tre Boston Quin Blanding

On this side of the ball, there’s still a lot of holes. At the very least, Carolina needs another starting EDGE to pair with Brian Burns, a few more interior defensive linemen and several more cornerbacks.

K Graham Gano Joey Slye Elliott Fry
LS J.J. Jansen
KR Pharoh Cooper

Obviously, the team won’t be carrying three kickers once the season begins. Expect a robust competition between Gano and Slye to see who wins the job.
