Pacific vs Gonzaga Game Preview

Why Pacific Will Win

Can the Tigers bring the same performance they came up with against USC?

They lost to the Trojans 74-68, but they started great, shot well from the inside, and they held on as long as possible before the talent took over and the shots started dropping.

To have any prayer, Pacific has to get Gonzaga to screw up. It only forced 11 turnovers against USC, but it might be able to make things interesting if it can generate enough easy points come close to keeping up.

The threes have to come early and often. The Tigers are 5-2 when hitting eight or more threes. Gonzaga has allowed eight or more threes eight times, but …

Why Gonzaga Will Win

The offense continues to be unstoppable.

It’s dropping 90 a game lately like it was nothing, the threes are falling, and no one is able to keep up.

Pacific just doesn’t score enough. It doesn’t have the ability to hit from three – it’s hasn’t hit close to 30% from the outside over the las three games – and it’s struggling to get to 70 points. It was able to do it in a win over Pepperdine, but it took 23 made free throws to get there.

Worse yet, the Tigers aren’t doing enough defensively. Teams are hitting 45% from the field on a consistent basis, and Gonzaga should blow past 55% if the threes are dropping.

What’s Going To Happen

Pacific has a way of battling with teams, and then losing. It might not get obliterated in the first ten minutes, but that tidal wave of Gonzaga points will be coming soon.

For all of Pacific’s issues, only one team – Santa Clara – has been able to score more than 80 points against it. That’s about to change.

USC vs Pacific Game Preview

Why Pacific Will Win

The Tigers need an unfocused effort from a USC team that had a few days off since the loss to Arizona.

Pacific might not have enough of a consistent offense to keep up if the Trojans get rolling, but it forces a ton of takeaways, it hasn’t been bad from the field lately, and when things are working – for the most part – it’s getting to the free throw line on a regular basis.

On the flip side, USC doesn’t do a ton to take the ball away and isn’t great on the free throw line, and …

Why USC Will Win

Pacific doesn’t score enough.

It’s not a great shooting team inside or out, there isn’t enough size to hold up on the boards, and it’s a fight to get to 70 points.

The USC defense was pushed over the last few games, and the offense has been a tad spotty – actually, it was bad in the Arizona swing – but coming up with offensive rebounds shouldn’t be an issue and the defense won’t allow much from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

It would be nice if Pacific could bomb away from three enough to throw a scare into the Trojans, but it doesn’t make enough from outside with just one game all year with double-digit threes.

USC will get out to a good start and coast. It needs the easy win after the last few games, and it’ll enjoy it.

ODDS: Boise State -2, per KenPom

PREVIEW: The Broncos are coming off of a much needed win Tuesday night against a BYU team that has been hard to read this early in the season. Tuesday night’s game went into overtime tied at 58 a piece and great penetration by Derrick Alston Jr. and big defensive plays at the top of the key by Justian Jessup sealed the win. Both players will be needed on Saturday in Stockton along with senior forward RJ Williams who is averaging a double-double (16.5 PPG and 10.0 RPG) in order to leave California with a win.

Alston has been dominant in four games, averaging 25.3 PPG 6.0 RPG and 1.8 APG, and even with a supporting cast of talented scorers sometimes his efforts are not enough. Shots just weren’t falling against UC-Irvine and Oregon is looking like a top 10 team with solid wins so far and should only get better with the return of N’faly Dante come December.

The Broncos are going to face a Tigers team who isn’t putting up big numbers (68.9 PPG) and are winning games by small margins as of the past week. They will need to simply knock down shots and outscore the Tigers who are led in scoring by junior guard Justin Moore with 12.0 PPG followed by senior guard Jahlil Tripp with 11.7 PPG and 7.7 RPG. The Tigers match up nicely with the Broncos in terms of height. Neither teams are very tall with starting big man Amari Mccray (6-9 265) playing around four guards and RJ williams a 6-7 forward essentially doing the same, even if the Broncos do have two guards who stand above 6-6. Look for Boise State to use their height advantage in certain positions as a weapon defensively again and for Alston to have another big game.

Game Prediction: Boise St. 80, Pacific 70
