Former Panthers QB signs with Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders

Former Panthers QB P.J. Walker is headed up north to the CFL.

An old friend has found a new home . . . a very new home.

On Tuesday, the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders announced they have signed former Carolina Panthers quarterback P.J. Walker. The 29-year-old will join the team as a member of their practice roster.

Walker first hit the pros following a four-year stay at Temple University from 2013 to 2016. The Elizabeth, N.J. native, who remains the program’s all-time leading passer, signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2017.

After bouncing back and forth between Indianapolis’ practice squad and free agency through the 2019 campaign, Walker really turned heads after joining the XFL in 2020. The COVID-shortened season saw him lead the Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 record with 1,338 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions.

That showing helped Walker back into the NFL, where the Panthers and his former Temple head coach Matt Rhule awaited him. He went on to play in 15 games for the Panthers between 2020 and 2022—amassing 1,461 passing yards, five touchdowns and 11 picks with seven starts.

Walker has since made stops with the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns and, most recently, the Seattle Seahawks.

Seahawks 90-man roster by jersey number going into summer break

Tomorrow mandatory minicamp is set to begin, so let’s take a look at the full roster heading in.

The Seahawks are reportedly signing former NC State running back Ricky Person Jr., which brings the offseason roster to 91 including offensive tackle Max Pircher, who has an international roster exception. The move is as yet unofficial so we don’t have a jersey number for Person as of yet, but we now know that former Browns quarterback P.J. Walker will be wearing No. 15.

Here’s the updated roster by jersey number going into summer break.

Seahawks make P.J. Walker signing official, waive rookie DT to make room

To make room for Walker on the 90-man roster, the team has waived rookie defensive tackle Buddha Jones.

The Seahawks have made official Friday’s reported signing of former Browns quarterback P.J. Walker. An undrafted QB out of Temple, Walker has been a practice squad option for the Colts and a backup for the Panthers and Browns. During his brief time in the XFL, Walker went 5-0 and looked like an MVP. However, in nine career starts in the NFL he’s gone 5-4 with six touchdowns, 16 interceptions and a passer rating of 52.2.

Walker takes over the No. 3 spot on the depth chart at quarterback beneath Geno Smith and Sam Howell. Odds are it will be difficult for him to make the initial 53-man roster unless either Smith or Howell get injured.

Former Browns quarterback P.J. Walker signs with the Seattle Seahawks

After a year with the Browns, Walker heads out west

Veteran quarterback P.J. Walker joined the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad last year as the emergency quarterback in case of injury. The Browns ultimately turned to Walker after Deshaun Watson’s injury, and though he wasn’t great overall, he had his moments.

Against the Colts on the road, the Browns needed a big drive to win the game, and Walker made some big-time throws to make that drive come true. Against one of the best teams in football, the 49ers, Walker led multiple scoring drives in the fourth quarter for a massive win in Cleveland.

The plays Walker made in key moments helped the Browns make the playoffs with big wins early in the season. Ultimately, he struggled overall, and if you have to rely on him for extended periods of time, you will be in a tough spot.

Walker now heads out west after signing a contract to become a member of the Seattle Seahawks. The Browns have mandatory minicamp next week before their summer break that ends when training camp starts.

Walker (5-foot-11, 215 pounds) played his college ball at Temple, where he posted over 10,000 passing yards, 74 touchdowns, 44 interceptions and a 129.1 rating over four years. In the NFL Walker has been primarily a backup quarterback, spending three years in Carolina and then last season in Cleveland. All together he’s gone 5-4 as a starter with 2,135 passing yards, six touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Walker’s best work was in the pandemic-shortened 2020 XFL season, though. While it was only a handful of games, Walker was as dynamic and dominant at that level as Patrick Mahomes at this one and likely would have won the league MVP award if the season had completed.

There’s a massive gap between the talent in the XFL and the NFL, though. In Seattle Walker will be a firm No. 3 option at quarterback behind Geno Smith and Sam Howell for now. He’ll have to show some improvement beyond his usual talented arm and legs to make the initial 53-man roster – especially when it comes to turnovers.

Browns name Jeff Driskel backup QB over P.J. Walker heading into wild-card game

The Browns officially have a new backup quarterback.

Jeff Driskel got the start for the Cleveland Browns over P.J. Walker a week ago and has done enough to win the backup quarterback job entering the postseason.

Speaking to the media today as the team prepares to take on the Houston Texans in the wild-card round, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said Driskel will be Cleveland’s backup quarterback.

In the Week 18 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Driskel went 13-of-26 for 166 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked three times on the day as well. Both of his touchdowns were to wide receiver David Bell in the fourth quarter.

Having started five quarterbacks this season, the Browns will hope to have way more health in the playoffs and just stick it out with Joe Flacco as they look to make a run at the first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

Report: Browns sign QB P.J. Walker to active roster as Dorian Thompson-Robinson injures hip

The move comes after DTR’s injury during the Texans game

It is a short week for the Cleveland Browns as they return home with a chance to punch their ticket to the postseason on Thursday against the New York Jets. The team continues to battle injuries, as they may be without both their kicker and punter. Now, Brad Stainbrook of The OBR has reported, due to a hip injury to backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the Browns are signing veteran P.J. Walker from the practice squad to the active roster.

It has been a struggle for Walker this season when he has played but the team was able to win several games with him under center. In a short week, there aren’t many options outside of the organization so the team made the only move that makes sense at the position.

Walker will now be the backup for Joe Flacco until Thompson-Robinson can recover from his hip injury. Hopefully, it will not be needed.

Report: Browns bring back P.J. Walker to the practice squad

The Browns have brought a familiar face back to the practice squad

After waiving quarterback P.J. Walker earlier this week to make room to activate rookie cornerback Cameron Mitchell, the Cleveland Browns have now re-signed him to the practice squad. The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook has first reported this move.

The Browns only have one quarterback on their active roster in rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson as Joe Flacco is still on the practice squad. Flacco will likely be signed to the active roster this week as he has been named the starting quarterback for the rest of the 2023 season. This means the Browns needed another practice squad quarterback.

Walker makes a great deal of sense given his time in Cleveland. Hopefully, however, Walker will not have to see the field anymore this season as his three games of significant playing time were more than enough to see he is not a starting-caliber quarterback.

This was always the logical move once Walker cleared waivers.

LOOK: Browns’ 54-man roster vs. Jaguars after elevating Joe Flacco, waiving P.J. Walker

Here is your Browns roster for the Jaguars game after a few tweaks.

After dropping two games in a row, the Cleveland Browns return home looking for a rebound win as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ahead of this Week 14 matchup, however, the Browns made a few changes to their roster. First, they elevated quarterback Joe Flacco from the practice squad. Then they activated cornerback Cameron Mitchell off of Injured Reserve, waiving quarterback P.J. Walker to make room for the rookie defensive back.

All signs point toward Flacco being signed to the active roster on Monday as the Browns now have just one quarterback in rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson on their actual 53-man roster at this point. While the Browns have not officially named a starting quarterback, there is reason to believe that Flacco will make his second start after a promising debut a week ago.

If P.J. Walker clears waivers, and the New York Jets might be desperate enough to sign him, expect him to land back onto the practice squad in Cleveland. After these changes to their roster, however, here is Cleveland’s 54-man gameday roster, highlighted by Joe Flacco, as they get set to take on the Jaguars at home.

Deshaun Watson to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

The Cleveland Browns will be without quarterback Deshaun Watson for the rest of the season due to shoulder surgery.

The trade the Cleveland Browns made for Deshaun Watson continues to complicate the franchise’s competitive picture. On Wednesday morning, the team announced that Watson will undergo season-ending surgery on a shoulder injury he suffered in the first quarter of Cleveland’s 33-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s a rough go for the Browns, who have fielded a top-tier defense for most of the season. They’ll now have to muddle through without their franchise quarterback and starting running back Nick Chubb, who was lost for the season in Week 2.

Watson played through the shoulder fracture against the Ravens, completing 20 of 34 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a passer rating of 74.8.

P.J. Walker is expected to take Watson’s place, which he’s done before this season as Watson has dealt with multiple injuries.
