Cardinals 5th-round pick Owen Pappoe already has post-NFL career goal in mind

He wants to be an NFL strength coach after his playing days are over.

The Arizona Cardinals made Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe the second of two fifth-round selections. He has yet to suit up for the team, but he already knows what he wants to do when the day comes he isn’t playing anymore.

Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis revealed on Tuesday what Pappoe told him previously.

“He basically said, ‘I want to really be a strength coach after I’m done playing in the NFL,'” Rallis told reporters.

The answer came when Pappoe was asked what he was studying in college. He studied exercise science.

Rallis thought it was cool for him to have those plans “because he was a little bit lighter playing safety then kind of changed his body.”

Pappoe enters the NFL undersized for traditional linebackers. He is six feet tall and 225 pounds.

He is built more like a safety than a linebacker, although that size and frame is becoming more and more common.

The coaches like Pappoe’s intelligence and athleticism. That comes first.

But assuming he can play in the NFL for a few years, keep an eye out on him after that to see if he lands a strength training job somehere in the league.

Cardinals’ grade for LB Owen Pappoe in Round 5: B+

Drafted in the fifth round, Pappoe is a plus athlete and has the upside of a starter.

The Arizona Cardinals used the second of two fifth-round selections to draft Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe. He is an ultra-athletic playmaking linebacker who sounds like he is ready to play already.

What grade do the Cardinals get for selecting him?

Grade: B-plus

The Cardinals went with plus athletes with every selection on Day 3.

Pappoe is undersized but insanely athletic. His bench press, 40, 10-yard split of the 40 and broad jump are all at least in the 90th percentile among linebackers.

He is built like new Cardinals linebacker Kyzir White and is and is as fast as Isaiah Simmons.

While we have seen years of high draft picks and big contracts going to off-ball linebackers, Pappoe matches philosophically what Jonathan Gannon wants from his linebackers.

He has the upside of a starter as a Day 3 pick. It is completely possible to see him replacing Isaiah Simmons in the starting lineup in a year, assuming Simmons’ fifth-year option is not exercised.

Five Tigers sign undrafted free agent contracts with NFL franchises

Eku Leota and John Samuel Shenker headline a list of former Tigers who are getting the chance to turn pro.

Last weekend was a special weekend for Auburn football, as five players were taken in the 2023 NFL draft.

[autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] led off day two by being taken 37th overall by the Seattle Seahawks, and [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] followed suit by being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 88th overall pick.

Saturday was a busy day as three more Tigers were taken. [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag] and [autotag]Anders Carlson[/autotag] will be heading north to Wisconsin after being drafted by the Green Bay Packers with the 116th and 207th overall respectively. [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag] was included in day three’s haul after being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in round five with the 168th overall selection.

Auburn’s draft class was impressive, as five players overall heard their names called. The total is up from just one last season as Roger McCreary was the only Tiger to be selected in the 2022 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans in round two.

Not only were five players selected in the NFL draft, but five others were able to join an NFL franchise by signing undrafted free agent contracts.

Here’s a look at the five other Tigers who will get the shot to prove their worth in the NFL.

Arizona Cardinals select Owen Pappoe in round five

Pappoe is the second Tiger taken on the final day of the NFL draft, joining Colby Wooden.

The latest Tiger to be taken in the NFL draft is linebacker [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag]. Pappoe was selected in round five of the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals with the 168th overall selection.

His selection marks the fourth Tiger to be selected in the 2023 NFL draft, joining fellow defenders Derick Hall (Seahawks), and Colby Wooden (Packers), as well as running back Tank Bigsby (Jaguars).

Jess Root of Cards Wire shares his initial thoughts on Pappoe:

Pappoe is a little undersized for the traditional linebacker position at six feet, 225 pounds. But he is a freak athlete. He benched 225 pounds 29 times at the combine, ran the 40 in 4.39 seconds and had explosive jumps (126-inch broad jump and 35.5-inch vertical).

The 2023 NFL draft was much better for Auburn, as they have seen four times as many players selected than last season. [autotag]Roger McCreary[/autotag] was the lone Tiger to be drafted last season, going 35th overall to the Tennessee Titans.

Cardinals select Auburn LB Owen Pappoe in Round 5

The Cardinals selected hyper-athletic Auburn LB Owen Pappoe with the 168th pick in the 2023 draft.

The Arizona Cardinals have made their second selection in the fifth round. They used pick No. 168 to select Auburn LB Owen Pappoe.

He was a two-time captain.

Last season,  he had 91 tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, an interception and three pass breakups.

Colby Wooden selected 116th overall by Green Bay Packers

Wooden is the third Tiger to be taken in the 2023 NFL draft, and the first of day three.

Hello, Wisconsin!

The third Auburn Tiger to be taken in the 2023 NFL draft is defensive lineman [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag], who was taken in the 4th round of the draft by the Green Bay Packers, who took Wooden with the 116th overall pick.

Wooden is seen as a player that will help the Packers with rushing the passer, joining first-round pick Lukas Van Ness. Packers Wire’s Brennan Rupp feels that Wooden could be a versatile piece to the Packers’ defense.

Colby Wooden is going to help Green Bay’s pass rush. He’s on the lighter side (273) but played closer to 285 when he was at Auburn. He’s a moveable piece that Joe Barry could get creative with how he deploys him. Over the past two seasons, he’s recorded 76 pressures to go along with his 11 sacks.

Wooden joins [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] and [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] as Tigers who have been taken in the 2023 NFL draft to this point. Hall was taken in the second round by the Seattle Seahawks, and Bigsby closed day two of the draft by being taken in the third round by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Other Tigers that could hear their name called on day three of the NFL draft include [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag] and [autotag]Eku Leota[/autotag].

The next Tiger off the board is Tank Bigsby, who was selected by the Jaguars with its’ third-round pick.

Day two of the NFL draft was a big day for former Auburn Tigers, as two of its’ own have found new homes.

Derick Hall selected 37th overall by Seattle Seahawks

Hall becomes the first Tiger taken in the 2023 NFL draft.

Day two of the 2023 NFL draft is underway, and the first Auburn Tiger is officially off the board.

EDGE [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] becomes the first Tiger drafted in 2023, as he was selected 37th overall by the Seattle Seahawks.

Hall was the sixth pick on day two and has joined an already talented draft class for the Seahawks. In round one, Seattle selected Illinois CB Devin Witherspoon and Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Nate Davis and Jim Reineking of USA TODAY see Hall as a great fit for the Seahawks’ defense.

The ‘Hawks begin building out the depth of their D-line with a 6-3, 254-pounder who posted 19½ sacks and 29½ tackles for loss over the past three seasons. As a team captain with 4.5 speed he brings good tangible and intangible assets to the Emerald City.

Several other Tigers will now await to hear their name called. Players to watch in this year’s draft include [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag], [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag], [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag], and [autotag]Eku Leota[/autotag].
