Oskar Palmquist says goodbye to Rutgers basketball, thanks Scarlet Knights fans

This week, Oskar Palmquist announced he is leaving Rutgers basketball.

After five years as a Scarlet Knight, Oskar Palmquist is moving on to the next chapter of his career. On Monday, the forward announced on social media that he will be pursuing professional opportunities overseas and will not return next year. The news marks the end of a solid collegiate career for Palmquist.

It also means that Rutgers basketball is projected to have three open roster spots to fill.

In four years as Scarlet Knight, Palmquist scored 156 points while recording 81 rebounds. He also dished out 26 assists and averaged a career-high 1.4 per game during the 2023-2-24 campaign. While those numbers don’t jump off the page, the Swedish native made the most of his opportunities.

Last season, he averaged 2.7 points per game as he came off the bench for Rutgers.

Additionally, since making his collegiate debut during the 2020-2021 season, Palmquist became a mainstay on a roster full of change. He still had a year of eligibility and could have returned as a veteran leader.

While Palmquists’ decision comes as no surprise, he did not take his time at Piscataway for granted. In his social media post, he thanked teammates and coaches who impacted his career.

Palmquist is the ninth member from last year’s team to leave Rutgers.

Rutgers basketball welcomes back junior forward Oskar Palmquist

Rutgers basketball forward Oskar Palmquist returns to the Scarlet Knights after entering the transfer portal on March 24th. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound junior from Sweden committed to Elon University on May 5th but reconsidered, entering the transfer portal on July 14th. On Sunday, Palmquist came back home to play with the Scarlet Knights.

Palmquist first committed to Rutgers in 2020 after receiving one offer from Western Kentucky. Over the last three seasons, the junior forward appeared in 48 games, recording two starts. Palmquist had his most active season in 2023, playing in 21 of the team’s 34 games for the Scarlet Knights. He averaged 9.8 minutes per game, 2.3 points, 1.1 rebounds, and shot 36.4 percent from three-point range.

The Swedish forward had his best game last season against No. 18 Indiana, posting nine points, shooting three of four from behind the arc.

With his return, Palmquist is the most efficient three-point shooter on Rutgers’ 2023-24 roster. Forward Aundre Hyatt is the second-highest three-point shooter, behind Palmquist on the Scarlet Knights roster at 30.6 percent. Palmquist is one of the program’s most experienced players heading into the upcoming season.

He will play alongside center Cliff Omoruyi and forward Mawot Mag in the 2023-24 season. Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell will use Palmquist off the bench for instant offense, giving his team a spark when needed. Palmquist rejoins the team with two years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

Rutgers basketball: Oskar Palmquist has entered the transfer portal

Oskar Palmquist has entered the transfer portal.

Oskar Palmquist entered the transfer portal on Friday as Rutgers basketball loses a valuable piece of their rotation.

Having played the past three years at Rutgers, the 6-foot-8 forward made some valuable contributions to the program, in particular this past season. He posted a career-high average for minutes played (9.1), points (2.3) and rebounds (1.1) per game.

Part of the 2020 recruiting class, Palmquist played in 48 games during his time at Rutgers. He made two starts this past season.

Palmquist was unlikely to see much of a larger role with the program. Mawot Mag grabbed the starting job at forward during the preseason and looked like a strong piece throughout this past year. And part of the 2023 recruiting class is Gavin Griffiths, a four-star forward who is likely to challenge for starting minutes this fall.

Earlier this week, center Cliff Omoruyi announced his intention to enter the NBA draft. Omoruyi, one of the top big men in college basketball, will not hire an agent as he maintains his college eligibility for a possible return to Rutgers for one more season.
