WR Osirus Mitchell reverts to Packers injured reserve

Osirus Mitchell went unclaimed on waivers, so he reverted back to injured reserve. An injury settlement could still be coming.

After going unclaimed on waivers on Thursday, wide receiver Osirus Mitchell reverted back to the injured reserve list of the Green Bay Packers.

Mitchell was waived/injured because of a quadriceps injury. He will either miss the rest of the season while on injured reserve in Green Bay or negotiate an injury settlement with the team, which would allow him to sign with another team and still play this year.

Mitchell, who starred in the USFL, signed with the Packers on July 25. He missed over a week of practice while dealing with a quad issue of unknown severity.

As of Friday, Mitchell is the only player on injured reserve for the Packers. He does not count against the team’s 90-man roster.

The Packers waived Mitchell and released long snapper Steven Wirtel to make room on the roster for running back Dexter Williams and safety Micah Abernathy.

Packers release LS Steven Wirtel, waive WR Osirus Mitchell

The Packers released long snapper Steven Wirtel and waived wide receiver Osirus Mitchell with an injury.

The Green Bay Packers made a roster move at both long snapper and wide receiver ahead of Wednesday’s training camp practice.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers released long snapper Steven Wirtel and waived wide receiver Osirus Mitchell with an injury.

The moves clear two spots on the 90-man roster. One spot is going to running back Dexter Williams.

Wirtel’s attempt to keep the long snapper job ended in failure after only two weeks of camp. He replaced Hunter Bradley and was the team’s long snapper in nine regular-season games and one playoff game in 2021. The Packers still have rookie Jack Coco on the roster at long snapper, and an addition could be coming – the team worked out long snappers Mitchell Fraboni and Antonio Ortiz on Tuesday.

Much is left to be decided at a key specialist spot with a month to go before the season opener at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Mitchell, who starred in the USFL, has been dealing with a quad injury and hasn’t practiced in a week. If unclaimed on waivers, Mitchell would revert to injured reserve in Green Bay and could depart later via an injury settlement.

Mitchell’s exit leaves 11 wide receivers left on the roster, although rookie Christian Watson (knee) remains on the PUP list to start camp.

The Packers open the preseason on Friday in San Francisco.

Packers RB Patrick Taylor, WR Osirus Mitchell miss Wednesday’s practice with new injuries

The Packers are without two players – RB Patrick Taylor and WR Osirus Mitchell – for Wednesday’s practice because of new injuries.

The Green Bay Packers added two new players to the injury list ahead of Wednesday’s practice. According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, running back Patrick Taylor and receiver Osirus Mitchell are not participating on Wednesday because of new injuries.

Taylor has a groin injury, while Mitchell is dealing with a quad issue.

The Packers held their first padded practice of training camp on Tuesday. It’s unclear when during the practice or how the injuries to Taylor and Mitchell occurred.

Taylor, who scored a touchdown in the season finale last year, entered training camp as the favorite to be the No. 3 running back while Kylin Hill recovers from an ACL injury on the PUP list. In Taylor’s absence, undrafted rookies BJ Baylor and Tyler Goodson will get more opportunities behind starters Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.

Mitchell, who was signed right before training camp, is fighting to make the team after a successful run with the USFL. Any lost time during camp will significantly hurt his chances of sticking, even on the practice squad.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said it was likely he’d have to make adjustments to his 90-man roster as injuries flared up during training camp and the preseason.

There was good news on the injury front: cornerback Jaire Alexander returned after sitting out the final portion of practice on Tuesday. Coach Matt LaFleur said Alexander was dealing with some “tightness” and his removal from practice was nothing more than “precautionary.”

Packers to sign USFL WR Osirus Mitchell on Tuesday

The Packers are signing WR Osirus Mitchell, who caught three touchdown passes for the Stallions of the USFL this year.

The Green Bay Packers will be adding another star from the USFL to the team’s 90-man roster before the start of training camp.

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Packers are signing wide receiver Osirus Mitchell (6-5, 210) to a one-year deal on Tuesday.

Mitchell, who caught 23 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL this year, was one of seven players to work out for the Packers on Monday.

Mitchell joins tight end Sal Cannella, who starred for the New Orleans Breakers, as USFL products arriving in Green Bay before camp. Mitchell’s Stallions went 9-1 and won the league in its return season.

Mitchell went undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2021. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys and spent most of the season on the team’s practice squad. During the preseason, Mitchell caught two passes on seven targets for 31 yards.

At Mississippi State, Mitchell finished ninth in school history in catches (107) and sixth in touchdown catches (14). He played in 46 games with 30 starts. In the 2020 opener against LSU, Mitchell set career-highs for catches (7), receiving yards (183) and touchdowns (2).

At his pro day, Mitchell ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds, hit 35.5″ in the vertical leap and finished the three-cone drill in 7.12 seconds. He has 10 7/8″ hands and an 82 1/4″ wingspan.

The Packers will need to release a player to make room for Mitchell on the roster.

Three Bulldogs who stood out in Mississippi State’s 44-34 win over LSU

Here’s a look at three Bulldogs who particularly stood out this weekend

There was always the thought a potential upset could be on the horizon as the Mississippi State Bulldogs traveled to Baton Rouge to take on the defending national champion LSU Tigers, and Mike Leach’s team certainly delivered on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback K.J. Costello hung over 600 passing yards on an LSU team that’s been so often commended for its defensive dominance in recent history, causing some embarrassment for “DBU.”

Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach described his team as “explosive but inconsistent,” and it will be interesting to see just how much of a force to be reckoned with they prove to be as the season rolls on.

Here’s a look at three Bulldogs who particularly stood out this weekend:

1. QB K.J. Costello.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Bulldogs could hardly have asked for more from Costello in his first game as a Mississippi State starter as he guided not only the Bulldogs to their first win of the season, but himself to breaking the record for most passing yards in a single SEC performance.

He finished out by completing 36-of-60 passing attempts for 623 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. His overall rating stood at 168.1 by the time the clock hit zero in the fourth quarter.

There were some decision-making mistakes Costello made throughout the game and turnovers that should have been avoided, but it’s looking like Leach got exactly what he wanted with this one.

Expect Costello to emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in college football as the season goes on.

Here’s a look at the SEC’s best receivers from each school and how they rank

This 3rd installment in our Gators Wire original series will attempt to rank the likely No. 1 wide receiver for every member school in fall.

After previously examining each Southeastern Conference program’s projected quarterback and lead tailback entering the 2020 season, this third installment in our Gators Wire original series will attempt to rank the likely No. 1 wide receiver for every member school this fall.

Featuring high-powered offenses throughout the league’s 14 teams, the conference had nine wideouts selected in the 2020 National Football League Draft, meaning there will be some big names to replace and opportunities for returning players to step into larger roles.

The Florida Gators had three receivers chosen in the draft, the most of any SEC program, with Van Jefferson coming off the board at No. 57 to the Los Angeles Rams, Freddie Swain at No. 214 to the Seattle Seahawks, and Tyrie Cleveland at No. 252 to the Denver Broncos, the fourth-to-last overall selection.

Three of the league’s wideouts went in the first-round, headed by Alabama Crimson Tide standout Henry Ruggs III to the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 12. His teammate, Jerry Jeudy, followed shortly behind, selected by the Broncos at No. 15, and Justin Jefferson of the LSU Tigers was plucked by the Minnesota Vikings at No. 22.
