Patriots place preseason standout on IR, sign rookie DE to main roster

The Patriots made two big roster moves on Wednesday

The New England Patriots announced on Wednesday they were placing sixth-year linebacker Oshane Ximines on injured reserve. They also announced the signing of rookie defensive end Jamree Kromah to the 53-man roster.

It was a busy day for the Patriots ahead of Thursday’s AFC East showdown against the New York Jets.

Ximines, who has been dealing with a knee injury, was one of the preseason standouts for the Patriots. He showed his ability to be disruptive by recording a sack in each of the first two exhibition games.

His emergence, along with Keion White’s unbelievable progression, was probably why the team felt comfortable parting ways with four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Matthew Judon before the season.

Ximines is at least out for the next four games with the injured reserve designation.

Meanwhile, Kromah is an undrafted rookie out of James Madison. He signed with the Chicago Bears in the offseason and was released during the roster cuts, before re-signing to the practice squad. He’s a large and powerful defender coming off a 10-sack season as a senior in college.

Considering the many pieces missing along the defensive front for the Patriots, they could certainly use the added depth on the roster.

How offseason free agent signing could help fill Matthew Judon void

The Patriots have the pieces in place to help fill the huge pass-rushing void left in the Matthew Judon trade

The New England Patriots moved Matthew Judon in a trade that shook up the roster last week. It was a surprising move that had some wondering who might step up and help fill the void left by the four-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher.

There’s hope that Judon’s departure might lead to the emergence of a training camp standout like outside linebacker Oshane Ximines.

Ximines spent nearly five seasons with the New York Giants before being released by the team in 2023. He was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft after playing college ball at Old Dominion.

He was picked up by the Patriots as a free agent in April, and now, he might play a bigger role in the linebacker room than originally intended.

“Ox has been great,” outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Came in here, learned the playbook quickly, humble approach to everything — a guy that wants to play the run, set the edge and do the dirty work. He fits right in this defense.”

Ximines had a sack and two quarterback hits in the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. He followed that performance up with a quarterback hit and a tackle for a loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stories like Ximines’ are part of the reason why training camp is so important. So many things can happen, and opportunities often come when they’re least expected.

You have to be ready for them when they do.

Ex-Giants Oshane Ximines, Shane Lemieux sign with new teams

Former New York Giants LB Oshane Ximines and OL Shane Lemieux have have joined the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

With the 2024 NFL draft now in the rearview mirror, teams have resumed addressing their needs through what remains of free agency.

On Tuesday, former New York Giants linebacker Oshane Ximines was one of those signed, joining Jero Mayo’s New England Patriots.

Ximines was a third-round pick of the Giants in the 2019 NFL draft but he failed to make a significant impact. He appeared in 48 games (nine starts), recording just 71 tackles (35 solo, nine for a loss), six passes defensed, 24 QB hits and 6.5 sacks.

Most of that production came during Ximines’ rookie season.

In addition to the edge rusher, offensive lineman Shane Lemieux also found a new home, agreeing to terms with the New Orleans Saints.

Lemieux was a fifth-round pick of the Giants in the 2020 NFL draft but like Ximines, failed to make a significant impact. Due to a multitude of injuries, he appeared in just 18 games with 12 starts, nine of which came as a rookie.

Patriots announce signing of former Giants veteran LB

The Patriots announced signing of former Giants veteran defender

The New England Patriots are giving their linebacker corps a boost with the announced signing of former New York Giants defensive veteran Oshane Ximines on Tuesday.

Ximines, who was taken by the Giants in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, saw his snap count diminish greatly in 2023 after seeing a major uptick in 2022.

That eventually led to him being released before the end of the season.

Ximines is well-rounded given his ability to play on both defense and special teams. Even though his numbers dipped last season, he was in on 51 percent of the defensive snaps in the prior year with 506 snaps under his belt.

Along with special teams, the Patriots could be looking to utilize him as a rotational pass-rusher. They are still looking to fill the sub pass-rusher and special teams role left behind by Mack Wilson, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency.

Ximines might ultimately be their answer to filling that role.

Giants release Oshane Ximines from practice squad, sign WR Dylan Drummond

The New York Giants have released LB Oshane Ximines from their practice squad and signed WR Dylan Drummond to replace him.

The New York Giants made some minor changes to their practice squad on Thursday, releasing linebacker Oshane Ximines and signing wide receiver Dylan Drummond.

Ximines was a third-round pick (No. 95 overall) in 2019 out of Old Dominion, the first player in school history to be selected in the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-4, 254-pound Ximines played in 45 total games over his first four seasons with the Giants, amassing 67 total tackles (34 solo) with 6.5 sacks and nine tackles for a loss. He also had 22 quarterback hits, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and six passes defensed.

This season, Ximines appeared in just three games, recording four tackles (one solo) and two QB hits.

The 23-year-old Drummond signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie out of Eastern Michigan back in May. He spent time on and off of their practice squad, appearing in just one game where he took five offensive snaps and three special teams snaps. He did not amass any stats.

Giants place Gary Brightwell on IR, activate two from practice squad

The New York Giants have placed RB Gary Brightwell on IR and made several other transactions, including two practice squad elevations.

The New York Giants have placed running back and special teams ace Gary Brightwell on injured reserve.

Brightwell, who’s been dealing with a hamstring injury, will miss at least the next four games, and he’s eligible to return in Week 12 against the New England Patriots.

Brightwell has not played an offensive snap since Week 4 and has only been used on special teams the past three games. He didn’t practice all this week due to a hamstring issue and was ruled out for this week’s game against the New York Jets on Sunday.

The Giants have added both Jashaun Corbin and Deon Jackson to the active roster to serve as running back depth behind Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida. Corbin is expected to be a candidate for punt return duties in the wake of the injury to Eric Gray.

The Giants also signed the recently added Gunner Olszewski from their practice to squad to the 53-man roster, replacing the aforementioned Brightwell.

Finally, quarterback Tommy DeVito and linebacker Oshane Ximines were elevated from the practice squad. Both are considered standard elevations.

The New York Giants elevated RB Taiwan Jones and LB Oshane Ximines from their practice squad ahead of Week 2 game against the Cardinals.

The New York Giants have elevated running back Taiwan Jones and linebacker Oshane Ximines from their practice squad ahead of a Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The 35-year-old Jones is a 13-year NFL veteran with a significant amount of experience. He appeared in 137 career games before joining the Giants, playing primarily on special teams, recording 79 tackles, one forced fumble, and seven fumble recoveries. He’s also returned 84 kickoffs for 1,907 yards.

Jones was elevated for a Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and took 15 snaps on special teams.

The Giants can only elevate Jones one more time this season before his eligibility runs out.

Ximines, the team’s third-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, was released as a part of final cuts before being added back to the practice squad.

In 45 career games (nine starts), the 26-year-old Ximines has recorded 67 tackles (34 solo), one forced fumble, 22 QB hits, 6.5 sacks, and six passes defensed.

Giants trim roster to 53: The 5 biggest surprise cuts

The New York Giants set their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday and these were the five biggest names waived, cut or released.

The New York Giants cut their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday.

Unlike in recent years, the exercise was a difficult one as the Giants had more depth in training camp this season

Here are the five biggest surprise cuts the Giants made on Tuesday.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 32-24 preseason loss to Jets

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ loss to the New York Jets in Week 3 of the preseason?

The New York Giants closed out their preseason with an injury-riddled 32-24 loss to the New York Jets on Saturday night.

The game itself — and the injuries — were overshadowed by the Jets debut of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who got into it with Giants linebacker Jihad Ward at one point. Both refused to talk about the incident after the game.

For several players, it was their final opportunity to earn a spot on the 53-man roster and, potentially, the final game of their career. Others played hard and opened eyes, potentially earning them a roster spot — either with the Giants or elsewhere.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the preseason loss? Let’s take a look.

Giants-Jets preseason Week 3: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 3 preseason game against the Jets. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants dropped their preseason finale to the New York Jets, 32-24, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday night.

The game marked the Jets on-field debut for quarterback Aaron Rodgers but the real story, at least in Giants land, will be the injuries.

The Giants saw eight players go down to injury during the game with seven of those failing to return. It’s a situation that will have an impact on the team’s cuts next week.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ loss.

Offensive snaps: 74
Defensive snaps: 59
Special teams snaps: 30

Offensive lineman Korey Cunningham and cornerback Amani Oruwariye took the full load of snaps, which tells you the Giants wanted to get one last long look. Ditto offensive tackle Matt Peart.

Linebacker Oshane Ximines also saw a significant amount of playing time and that may call into question his future with the team. Of course, the Giants were also running low on numbers due to injury and that obviously factored in.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard seeing time on special teams is also curious.
