Report: Mutual interest between Klay Thompson and Orlando Magic

With the start of free agency looming, there’s already one team reportedly being linked to Klay Thompson.

The first domino to fall during the Golden State Warriors highly anticipated offseason will likely involve four-time champion Klay Thompson. The five-time NBA All-Star sharpshooter is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and he reportedly already has suitors outside of the Bay Area.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, there is mutual interest between the Orlando Magic and Thompson. In an appearance on Fan Duel TV’s “Run It Back,” Charania reported Thompson is a name to keep an eye on for the Magic.

Coming off a loss in Game 7 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the postseason, the Orlando Magic are expected to have open cap space and spend in free agency.  The Magic will have the chance to build around the impressive young core of Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner.

Thompson is coming off an up-and-down season with the Warriors, during which he came off the bench for the first time in his decorated career. The 34-year-old averaged 17.9 points on 43.2% shooting from the field and 38.7% from beyond the arc.

Free agency is set to begin on June 30 when the new league year gets underway.

Orlando Magic offseason primer: On the way up, with money to spend

In the only seven-game series of the first round of the 2024 NBA playoffs, the Orlando Magic lost on the road to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 106-94, ending their season. It was the first postseason appearance for the Magic since the bubble of 2020, and …

In the only seven-game series of the first round of the 2024 NBA playoffs, the Orlando Magic lost on the road to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 106-94, ending their season.

It was the first postseason appearance for the Magic since the bubble of 2020, and their 47-35 regular-season record was their best since the 52-30 mark of 2010-11, all the way back in the Stan Van Gundy/Dwight Howard era. One of the NBA’s worst franchises of the last decade finally found some form, some fun and some success. Now, the question becomes how to build on this going forward.

Because they have been led by young stars Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs, the Magic have been able to do what they have done while keeping costs down. All three are on rookie-scale contracts, and thus the team is in an enviable position of being young, good and at a manageable cost. There therefore exists a window to add more talent before the bigger paydays come due, aided by the expiration of some of their more significant contracts at just the right times.

That said, to have potential flexibility is different to being able to convert that into meaningful additions, and the future big contracts will need budgeting for. It is therefore a balancing add between immediate possibilities and future necessities. With this in mind, here follows a look at the Orlando Magic’s roster and spending heading into the 2024 NBA offseason.

NBA Twitter reacts to Cavaliers eliminating Magic in Game 7: ‘Donovan Mitchell dragging the Cavs to victory like LeBron’

Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 39 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Caris LeVert added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench. Paolo Banchero was again the star in Orlando with 38 points and 16 rebounds.

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to the Cavs victory.

Is it better that the Boston Celtics have five days off while they wait to see who their 2024 NBA East semis opponent is?

Could this long break for Boston hurt the Celtics by bringing some rustiness to the team?

Is it better that the Boston Celtics have five days off while they wait to see who their 2024 NBA East semis opponent is? The Celtics are looking at an extra-long pause in their postseason action as they wait for the winner of the Cleveland Cavaliers – Orlando Magic Eastern Conference first round series.

The winner of that matchup will face the Celtics in the next round, with Game 7 for those teams coming on this next Sunday (May 5) afternoon. Could this long break for Boston hurt the Celtics by bringing some rustiness to the team? Or might it be a blessing for injured big man Kristaps Porzingis to heal up?

Cleveland Cavaliers or Orlando Magic: Is there a better matchup for the Boston Celtics?

The Celtics now find themselves in the enviable spot of getting some rest and practices in while waiting to see who their next opponent will be.

The Boston Celtics have had long, drawn-out postseason series with the Miami Heat in recent seasons, usually going for at least 6 if not 7 games. But after beating the Heat in just 5 games in the 2024 Eastern Conference first round, the Celtics now find themselves in the enviable spot of getting some rest and practices in while waiting to see who their next opponent will be.

Their opponent for the NBA’s 2024 Eastern Conference semifinals matchup will come from the winner of the Cleveland Cavaliers – Orlando Magic first round series that just went to seven games on this past Friday (May 3). Is there a better matchup between the two for Boston?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Still Poddable” podcast, Brian Robb, Sam Packard, and Jay King, hashed who they think Boston ought to want. Check it out below!

Paolo Banchero is acing every playoff test through six games

Former Duke star and No. 1 draft pick Paolo Banchero is playing his first playoff series, and he’s scored 20 points five times in six games.

Great players forge their mark during the regular season, but legacies are crafted in the postseason. Luckily for former Blue Devil Paolo Banchero, that latter part doesn’t seem to be a problem.

Banchero, who now plays for the Orlando Magic, scored a team-high 27 points on Thursday night as the Magic defeated Cleveland on their home court to force a winner-take-all Game 7.

The former Blue Devil, whom Orlando picked No. 1 overall in the 2022 NBA draft, went 9/20 from the floor and 7/10 from the free-throw line for the game. He’s only six games into his playoff career, but Banchero is already stacking statement performances.

In Game 3, after back-to-back losses to open the series, Banchero offered up a 31-point, 14-rebound double-double for Orlando’s first win. In Game 5, despite the Magic losing by a single point, Banchero scored a playoff-career-high 39 points and shot 14/24 from the floor.

Across the first six games of his postseason career, Banchero is averaging 25.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. That’s the 14th-highest scoring average in the NBA playoffs this year, ahead of names like fellow Duke star Jayson Tatum (21.8), James Harden (21.2), Paul George (19.5), and Tyrese Haliburton (16.0). He’s shooting 47.9% from the floor and 38.2% from beyond the arc.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Banchero is still just 21 years old. His 151 points through his first six career playoff games are a Magic franchise record, a team that saw the start of legends like Shaquille O’Neal, Dwight Howard, and Penny Hardaway.

It remains to be seen whether Banchero’s heroics can lift Orlando to the second round, but he’s flashing his potential as a future league-defining star.

Paolo Banchero puts up fifth 20-point playoff game to help Orlando force Game 7

Former Duke star Paolo Banchero scored 27 points, his fifth 20-point game of the series, to help the Orlando Magic force Game 7 against Cleveland.

Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic will live to fight another day.

Banchero, the former Duke star and the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft, scored 27 points in Orlando’s 103-96 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The game, the sixth edition of a best-of-seven series, forced a winner-take-all game in Cleveland on Sunday.

Orlando trailed 78-73 after three quarters, but the Magic outscored Cleveland by 12 points over the final 12 minutes for the win.

Banchero made nine of his 20 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, and he went 7/10 from the free-throw line. His teammate Franz Wagner added 26 points to overcome a 50-point game from Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell.

The former Blue Devil set a franchise record with 151 points through his first six playoff games. Banchero has scored at least 20 points in five of Orlando’s six postseason battles thus far, including 31 points in Game 3 and 39 points in Game 5.

Banchero added eight rebounds and four assists in the comeback effort.

‘This is the moment you play for’: Magic eagerly await Game 7 after defeating Cavaliers

Paolo Banchero scored 27 points, Franz Wagner added 26 points and the Magic pulled out a late win to beat the Cavaliers in Game 6 on Friday.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Paolo Banchero scored 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists, Franz Wagner added 26 points and the Orlando Magic pulled out a late win to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday to force a decisive Game 7 in their first-round series.

The Magic controlled much of the first half of the contest, leading by as many as eight points. Despite being outscored 40-18 in the paint, they limited the Cavaliers to 1-of-14 shooting from 3-point range to carry a 53-49 lead into the intermission.

Cleveland then seemingly woke up.

Led by Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, the Cavaliers began the third quarter on a 17-4 run to go up by nine points. They held a 29-20 advantage in the period and the lead for the next 15 minutes of game time before the Magic staged their comeback attempt.

“Ain’t nobody held their head when they went on that run,” said Cole Anthony, who finished with nine points. “Basketball is a game of runs, so we just weathered the storm, chipped into the lead and when we were able to get it back to an even game, we just stayed composed and made some plays at the right time.”

Mitchell finished with 50 points, including 31 in the second half, to join LeBron James as the only two players in franchise history to reach that mark in the playoffs. Garland added 21 points and Max Strus had 10 points to lead the Cavaliers, who were without Jarrett Allen (rib).

After outscoring the Magic by nine points in the third quarter, the Cavaliers, with the exception of Mitchell, failed to get going offensively. Mitchell went 7-of-13 from the field and accounted for all of their 18 points in the fourth quarter, while the rest of the team went without a field goal.

“You look at the second half and third quarter, (it wasn’t) great defensively, and then I thought we were really locked in,” Wagner said. “I thought Mitchell hit a bunch of tough shots. Credit to him, but I thought we stuck with it and kept making it tough and then got stops when we needed to. That was pretty much the game. We got stops in the fourth and whenever you keep getting stops, you get a rhythm a little bit and some offense going.”

The fourth quarter had five lead changes while the score was tied four times. The Magic wouldn’t take the lead for good until Banchero hit a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 39 seconds left to play. From there, the Magic answered each basket by the Cavaliers to save their season.

The Magic, despite getting outscored 66-38 in the paint, managed to pull out the win by limiting the Cavaliers’ 3-point attempts. Cleveland finished by converting only 25% (7-of-28) from beyond the arc, which was a point of emphasis by Orlando.

The effort was noted by coach Jamahl Mosley.

There was just a poise about them. They understood what the game plan was. They didn’t try to chase it. They knew what we were trying to accomplish down the stretch; guys made big plays. They trusted each other, trusted the pass. They understood who had it going and they didn’t shy away from it.

Jalen Suggs chipped in 22 points, six rebounds and four assists with six 3-pointers and Wendell Carter Jr. added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Magic. They also received strong contributions from Jonathan Isaac (nine rebounds) and Markelle Fultz (six points),

The two teams head to Cleveland for Game 7 on Sunday (1 p.m. EDT, ABC). Each played their last Game 7 against the Boston Celtics, who are awaiting the winner on Sunday. Cleveland last won a Game 7 in 2018; it was 2009 for the Magic.

Orlando is eagerly awaiting that challenge.

“This is the moment you play for; why you do it,” Mosley said. “You do it for these moments. … You lay it all out there on the line, one opportunity. I think that these guys will all embrace that, knowing what they’re capable of doing. It isn’t going to be easy, nor do we want it to be easy.”

The Boston Celtics advanced to the NBA’s 2024 Eastern Conference semifinals, defeating the short-handed Miami Heat 118-84 in Game 5 on this past Wednesday (May 1) night. The Celtics now await the outcome of the Cleveland Cavaliers – Orlando Magic first round series to determine their next opponent in the 2024 postseason.

The Cavaliers currently lead that series 3-2, with Game 6 scheduled to take place in Orlando on this next Friday (May 3) night. Which of the two ball clubs should the Celtics want to play in the 2024 East semis, the more physical Magic or more offensively-capable Cavs?
