Vipers outlast Guardians for first XFL 2023 triumph

The Vegas Vipers outscored the Orlando Guardians in a battle of previously winless XFL teams

Rod Woodson and the Vegas Vipers have their first win in XFL play.

Terrell Buckley and the Orlando Guardians are winless through five games.

In a duel between previously winless teams Saturday, the Vipers outlasted the Guardians, 35-32.

The outcome was in doubt until 72 seconds were left. Cody Latimer caught a 45-yard TD pass from Quinten Dormady.

However, a 3-point conversion — from the 10-yard line — failed — and Woodson had his first XFL victory.

The loss spoiled a superb relief effort by Quinten Dormady. He replaced Paxton Lynch and went 22-of-25 for 256 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Luis Perez was 20-of-28 for 269 yards through the air and 3 touchdowns.

Jeff Badet had a pair of TD receptions and Rod Smith rushed for 62 yards and 2 scores.

Houston Roughnecks clobber Orlando Guardians in XFL 2023 play

Houston crushed Orlando in XFL 2023 play

A mismatch on paper proved to be exactly that on the field Saturday as the Houston Roughnecks remained perfect, battering the winless Orlando Guardians, 44-16.

The outcome never was in doubt as early as the first quarter when Houston scored 20 straight points.

Brandon Silvers completed 24-of-30 passes for 239 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Roughnecks used the double-forward pass for a touchdown as Jontre Kirklin threw a 49-yard pass to Deontay Burnett.

Dejoun Lee had a pair of rushing TDs for Houston, which had 95 yards on the ground in the second half after going for -1 in the first 30 minutes.

Paxton Lynch threw for 230 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown pass to Charleston Rambo in the mismatch.

Wade Phillips and Houston are 4-0, while Terrell Buckley and Orlando are 0-4.

XFL Roughnecks pull off double-forward pass touchdown

The Roughnecks used a rule exclusive to the XFL for a special touchdown

It is almost unfair to use trickeration on the hapless and winless Orlando Guardians.

Wade Phillips and the Houston Roughnecks didn’t care in XFL action on Saturday and wound up with a 20-0 lead after a trick play thanks to league rules.

The XFL allows for double-forward passes if the first throw is behind the line of scrimmage.

Brandon Silvers threw the football to Jontre Kirklin, who went deep, deep, deep to Deontay Burnett.

Forty-nine yards later, Burnett was in the end zone and the Roughnecks led 20-0 … in the first quarter.

Paxton Lynch backward pass turns into Roughnecks touchdown in XFL 2023

Paxton Lynch threw a backward pass and Houston’s Will Likely turned it into a touchdown

The Orlando Guardians are winless and appear to be going nowhere against the Houston Roughnecks in Week 4 of the XFL season.

Paxton Lynch, once a first-round pick of the Denver Broncos, threw a backward pass in the first quarter on Saturday.

Will Likely of the Roughnecks scooped the ball on a bounce and cruised into the end zone.

The pass was clearly backward as was noted by rules official Dean Blandino in the replay command center.

For some reason, Guardians coach Terrell Buckley used his lone challenge of the game on the call.

The call was upheld and the winless Guardians were dealt another blow.

Renegades edge winless Guardians in dreary XFL contest

The Arlington Renegades downed the winless Orlando Renegades in a sleepy XFL contest

After his Arlington Renegades downed the Orlando Guardians, 10-9, Sunday in XFL 2023 play, coach Bob Stoops was asked about the victory.

“Barnburner” the former Oklahoma coach said sarcastically after the low-scoring contest that saw the Renegades improve to 2-1 while the Guardians fell to 0-3.

Stoops wasn’t kidding.

Kyle Sloter threw for 124 yards and a TD in his first start for Arlington. The TD pass to Tyler Vaughns tied the game in the fourth quarter.

Stoops recognized there weren’t going to be many points scored and went for the 1-point conversion. The Renegades ran the ball in — there are no kicking PATs in the XFL — and Arlington held on for the victory.

Paxton Lynch threw for 219 yards and rushed for 43 in the loss as Terrell Buckley has yet to find a winning combination.

A last-ditch deep pass from Lynch to Charleston Rambo was completed but the receiver was unable to get one foot down inbounds.

The XFL plays by college rules and one foot in would have been enough to keep the drive going. It was not to be.

Former Dolphin Terrell Buckley rips his XFL team during game

This is the raw emotion that the XFL promised.

The XFL has offered football fans another league to follow along with during the NFL’s offseason, joining the USFL, which has yet to kick off their 2023 season.

Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Terrell Buckley is actually coaching in the XFL, as he’s the head coach of the Orlando Guardians.

During their game this past weekend’s matchup, Buckley was being interviewed on the sideline about his team’s poor performance. Instead of giving the typical canned coach response, Buckley called out his players for their lack of effort mid-game.

If the XFL is going to offer coaches and players saying their true feelings during the game, that’s a step up from what the NFL is offering in terms of in-game content from the teams.

An XFL head coach was brutally honest about his team’s awful effort in 2 sideline interviews

Buckley wore ALL of his frustrations on his sleeve.

After a slow start to the 2023 XFL season, Orlando Guardians head coach Terrell Buckley seems pretty displeased.

While the team and backup quarterback Deondre Francois took their hot-mic lumps in a 30-12 defeat to the San Antonio Brahmas on Sunday, Buckley took his players to task not once but twice.

The first occasion saw the coach discuss what transpired mid-game. By the end of the third quarter, Orlando was down 27-6 and seemed out for the count. Rather than offer the typical cliches of playing better, playing harder, and making adjustments, Buckley was instead rather candid.

Buckley thought his team was putting in a horrible effort and let the reporter interviewing him know as much:

Phew. I don’t know that I remember the last time a coach essentially called for different players who wanted to try harder… in a mid-game interview.

By the matchup’s end, Buckley was curter with a 30-12 loss cemented. Were there any positives? Anything he liked at all from the Guardians in an 18-point blowout defeat?

He kept it simple:

There are still eight games left in the 2023 XFL regular season, but the Guardians already sit in a comfortable last place in the XFL South division. If Buckley’s players don’t pick it up soon, it might be a long spring.

The best-case scenario would be the Guardians taking their coach’s frustrated honesty and channeling it into better performances down the line.

A hot mic picked up a XFL QB frustratingly telling his teammates to ‘shut the [expletive] up’

The man had ENOUGH of his teammates not listening.

The Orlando Guardians already had their hands full during a 30-12 defeat to the San Antonio Brahmas. So when backup QB Deondre Francois (who was mic’d up) came in to lead the offense in the late stages, the broadcast figured to get a few notable mid-game soundbites. (Note: This isn’t the first time a 2023 XFL game has delivered the goods so far.)

With the way the Guardians’ offense struggled (it didn’t even crack 200 total team yards), Francois’s evident frustrations probably should’ve been seen coming.

As the QB tried to rally the troops in the huddle, some of his teammates began to talk over his play call. Francois didn’t take lightly to this and had a hilariously NSFW response to quickly quiet everyone down:

(Note: NSFW language in the video below.)

Look, if I were trying to rally the troops, I’d find it hard to believe I wouldn’t react like Francois, too. I’d say it’s fair that these sorts of moments happen in all sorts of football games all the time. The real story here is that he just happened to be mic’d up while attempting to get his offensive teammates in line.

And that kind of brilliant timing is what makes for sports comedy gold.

Coan throws three TDs in first XFL win

Former Badger quarterback Jack Coan got his first win of his XFL career Sunday as the Brahmas defeated the Orlando Guardians 30-12.

Former Badger quarterback Jack Coan got his first win of his XFL career Sunday as the Brahmas defeated the Orlando Guardians 30-12. The quarterback was able to throw for 165 yards and three touchdowns.

Coan was able to connect with tight end Deon Yelder for a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter, giving the Brahmas an early 6-0 lead.

His next passing score came in the following quarter when he was able to hit another tight end Alize Mack for a 19-yard touchdown.

Finally, he delivered a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Tolliver in the third quarter to get his third score of the day.

After not being selected by the Brahmas and subsequently assigned to their team, Coan seems destined to hold onto the starting role after the franchise’s first ever victory Sunday.

Jack Coan, San Antonio Brahmas crush Orlando Guardians in XFL 2023

Former ND QB Jack Coan led San Antonio to an easy XFL 2023 victory over Orlando

Former Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan had a stellar day throwing Sunday in XFL play as the San Antonio Brahmas dealt the Orlando Guardians their second straight loss, 30-12.

The matchup started as Coan against former Denver Broncos first-round pick Paxton Lynch and it was no contest.

Coan threw for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for 23 yards on 3 carries as the Brahmas evened their mark at 1-1.

The TD passes went to Alize Mack, Jalen Tolliver, and Deon Yelder.

Lynch was 9 of 19 for 79 yards and a TD.

Deondre Francois replaced him — as was planned — and went 6 of 13 for 7 yards and a TD.

Terrell Buckley has a lot of work to do in this short season as the Guardians appear to be the worst team in the league.
