Trey Mancini wins MLB Comeback Player of the Year

Was there ever any doubt from the second he stepped on the field this past opening day?

In a year that saw some incredible performances there was no easier Major League Baseball award to be given out than the American League Comeback Player of the Year Award that went to Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

Mancini, a former Notre Dame star, returned to the Orioles after missing the entire 2020 season after being diagnosed with colon cancer during spring training.  Mancini hit 21 home runs and batted in 71 runs in 147 games this season.

Mancini also made a splash during the All-Star Game festivities in Colorado when he finished second in the home run derby to Pete Alonso of the New York Mets.

Congratulations to Mancini for an incredible return to the field in 2021!

Orioles announcer Kevin Brown paid tribute to Michael K. Williams by using one of his most iconic lines after a home run

This was so awesome.

People everywhere were crushed after finding out about the tragic death of Michael K. Williams.

He’d touched so many people in so many places with his iconic acting performances through the years. And though his impact was wide-ranging, he’d probably left his biggest imprint on the city of Baltimore.

His performance in The Wire as Omar Little is one of the most iconic performances you’ll ever see on television. So, of course, folks from Baltimore will have a bit more of a connection to Williams than most others.

That’s why it was so perfect when Orioles announcer Kevin Brown paid tribute to Williams by using one of his most iconic lines from the show.

Kevin Hays hit a home run on Tuesday night against the Royals and as the ball was going over the wall, Brown said “If you come at the king, you best not miss.”

For those who haven’t seen The Wire, that’s one of the most iconic lines from Williams’ performance as Omar. It’s an incredible scene with an incredible line from an incredible actor.

What a call from Brown. This is a dope tribute.

Notre Dame’s Mancini falls in Home Run Derby Final

Even the best comeback stories are rarely this good.

If it were a Hollywood script Trey Mancini would have upset defending Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso and taken Monday’s derby crown.

Instead, it was Alonso winning the derby for a second year in a row and Mancini falling just short in what was one heck of an effort.

Mancini started Monday night’s home run derby by upsetting Matt Olson of the Oakland A’s in the first round, 24-23 before then knocking out Trevor Story of the host Colorado Rockies in the semi-finals.

This sent the sixth-seeded Mancini to the finals to take on Alonso where he fell 23-22, as Alonso’s walk-off winner came during the bonus time he had earned.

Even without the trophy it was an incredible coming out party for Mancini, who missed all of the 2020 season while battling colon cancer.

It may not have been the Hollywood ending all of us non-Mets fans wanted, but it was still an ovation worthy showing by Mancini.

Watch: Mancini homers, adds to MLB RBI lead

Trey Mancini has been on a heater of late, only adding to that Wednesday afternoon.

Trey Mancini got after it early on Wednesday as the current MLB leader in RBI added to his total in his first at-bat of the matinee affair in Minnesota.

Batting with two outs and nobody on in the top of the first inning, Mancini launched an 0-2 pitch into the left-field stands at Target Field to give the Orioles an early 1-0 lead over the Twins.

That gives Mancini 42 RBI on the season, 25 of which have come in May while the home run was his 11th of the 2021 campaign.

Mancini has been one of the few bright spots for the Orioles who entered Wednesday’s contest just 17-31 on the season.

Perez will make his first start as a member of the Red Sox after coming over in the offseason after one year with the Minnesota Twins. His first seven seasons in the majors were with the Texas Rangers.

Prediction

Red Sox 9, Orioles 6

Moneyline (ML)

The RED SOX (-209) are heavy chalk against the Orioles (+185), who simply cannot be trusted. Boston improved to 15-6 in its past 21 at home vs. Baltimore after Friday’s series-opening 13-2 rout. The Red Sox are 36-16 in their last 52 meetings vs. the Orioles.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Red Sox (-209) to win straight up nets a return of just $4.78.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RED SOX (-1.5, -110) are a much better value on the run line than eating all of that chalk on the moneyline. Even with OF Mookie Betts now playing his baseball in Los Angeles with the Dodgers, the Red Sox have more than enough firepower to put away the Orioles in the ultra-competitive AL East. Boston’s bats were certainly alive and well in Game 1.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 10.5 (-110) is the play here. Cobb could be rather rusty while making his first start since late April 2019, and Perez is always very hittable and yields plenty of runs. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a run total well into the double digits.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox matchup, with MLB betting predictions, picks and best bets.

The Baltimore Orioles travel to meet the division rival Boston Red Sox Friday at Fenway Park for a 7:30 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Orioles-Red Sox MLB betting odds and lines, with betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Orioles at Red Sox: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Tommy Milone vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi

The journeyman southpaw Milone posted a dismal 4-10 record with a 4.76 ERA and 94 strikeouts last season for the Seattle Mariners.

  • Milone hasn’t faced the Red Sox since 2016. That might be a good thing, as he was hammered for eight runs – four earned – on 10 hits in just 4 2/3 innings in a loss at Fenway Park as a member of the Minnesota Twins July 24, 2016.
  • The southpaw was actually better on the road than at home last season. Away from Seattle, he was 3-4 with a respectable 3.91 ERA across 50 2/3 innings over two starts and nine relief appearances. However, he was 1-6 with a 5.56 ERA at home.

Eovaldi struggled with a 2-1 record, 5.99 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 70 strikeouts and 35 walks across 12 starts and 11 relief appearances in ’19.

  • Eovaldi was tagged for eight earned runs on six hits and seven walks with just four strikeouts in seven innings across two starts vs. Baltimore last year, going 0-1 with a 10.29 ERA.
  • He also didn’t fare well at Fenway Park last season, going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA, 29 K’s and 22 walks across 30 innings over five starts and seven relief showings.

Prediction

Red Sox 6, Orioles 4

Moneyline (ML)

The Orioles (+180) might be a tempting play on the road, but AVOID. The Red Sox (-209) are heavily favored for a reason, even if they’re expected to be a mediocre team overall. Boston is 14-6 in their past 20 at home vs. Baltimore, and 35-16 in the previous 51 meetings overall.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Red Sox (-209) to win straight up nets a return of just $4.78.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RED SOX (-1.5, -115) are a better play, albeit make it just a small-unit wager. Boston is not expected to be a championship-caliber team, but Baltimore is likely to be terrible again. The BoSox might get off to a fast start against their overwhelmed rivals.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 9.5 (-110) is worth playing, but don’t get carried away with a big bet. The starting pitchers are pretty horrendous in this one, and we could see both sides go to the bullpen early. As such, the offenses for both sides could get off to a bit of a quick start.
