Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Baltimore Orioles are on the road to open their season when they face the Tampa Bay Rays Friday. First pitch from Tropicana Field is set for 3:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Orioles vs. Rays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Rays won the 2021 series 18-1, outscoring the Orioles 150-71.

It appears another difficult season is in the future for the Orioles. Baltimore has finished last in the AL East in four of the last five years. That’s looking as though it may be a likely outcome again as the O’s were Tipico’s longest preseason odds to win the World Series at +40000.

Tampa will be looking for a strong start in their home opener after recording 100 wins last season before falling 3-1 to the AL East rival Boston Red Sox in the ALDS. The Rays will once again have one of the lowest payrolls in MLB but are still expected to be a contender in the packed AL East.

Orioles at Rays: Projected starters

LHP John Means vs. LHP Shane McClanahan

Means (6-9, 3.62 ERA in 2021) gets the opening-game nod for the Orioles. The lefty recorded a 1.03 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9 and 7.7 K/9 through 146 2/3 IP in 26 starts in 2021.

  • Posted a 5.40 ERA on a 1.35 WHIP in five starts (0-2) against the Rays in 2021.
  • Had a slightly depressed ERA in 2021 as evidenced by his xFIP (4.36), xERA (4.09) and SIERA (4.10).

McClanahan (10-6, 3.43 ERA in 2021) takes the mound for the Rays’ opening day in just his second season. He finished with a 1.27 WHIP, 10.3 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 across 123 1/3 IP in 25 starts last year.

  • Was a perfect 4-0 with a 2.74 ERA (23 IP), 1.09 WHIP and 9.0 K/9 in four starts versus the Orioles in his rookie campaign.
  • Was one of three Rays to receive AL Rookie of the Year votes in 2021, finishing seventh.

Orioles at Rays prediction and picks

Prediction

Rays 6, Orioles 3

Money line

Starting pitching, relief pitching and batting should all favor the Rays in this game. While Means showed flashes last season, particularly early in the year, Tampa was able to get him to for 4 or more runs in three of his five starts against them. Even if the lefty is able to keep Tampa contained, the bullpen battle should favor the 100-win team.

At the plate Tampa was one of the best hitting teams against left-handed pitchers in the American League in 2021; Baltimore was the worst.

Run line/Against the spread

Sure, this is a new season, but not a lot has changed between these two clubs. The Rays were 15-4 ATS versus the Orioles last season.

It’s the first game of the year and there could be surprises in store for us so don’t get carried away, but consider a partial-unit play on the RAYS -1.5 (+115).

Over/Under

PASS.

Means did manage to keep the Rays under wraps in two of his five starts last season, but more importantly he was much sharper in the first half of the season and all five of his Rays meetings came after the break. The Orioles lefty recorded a 2.28 ERA in 12 first-half starts, in contrast to a 4.88 ERA in 14 starts after the All-Star break. It’s risky business to get behind him being lit up, necessarily.

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Baltimore Orioles (38-81) and Tampa Bay Rays (74-47) wrap up their four-game series Thursday afternoon at Tropicana Field, with the first pitch coming at 1:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Orioles vs. Rays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Orioles RHP Jorge Lopez (3-13, 6.14 ERA) makes his 25th start. He has a 1.65 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9 and 8.1 K/9 through 111 1/3 IP.

  • The Orioles lost each of Lopez’s last two starts after winning each of his last four outings. In his most recent start, he allowed 7 runs across 3 1/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox.
  • He has a 5.87 ERA through three starts this month and allowed at least 4 runs in 10 starts this season.

Rays LHP Shane McClanahan (7-4, 3.73 ERA) makes his 19th start. He has a 1.29 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 10.6 K/9 through 89 1/3 IP.

  • The Rays won each of McClanahan’s last three starts, as he pitched to a 2.95 ERA over his last 18 1/3 innings.
  • In two starts against the Orioles, McClanahan allowed 4 runs and struck out 15 over 12 innings, earning two wins.

Prediction

Rays 7, Orioles 3

Money line (ML)

As heavily as the Rays are favored against the Orioles, I’m not touching the money line in this game. At -400, there’s very little upside in betting on the Rays to win outright, and I’m nowhere near confident the Orioles will upset Tampa Bay on the road, having lost eight straight to the Rays.

PASS on the money line and instead bet on the spread.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Rays have won eight in a row against the Orioles and covered the spread seven times in that span. Overall, the Orioles have lost 14 games in a row to sink even further below .500 on the year.

Lopez allowed only 2 runs over 6 innings last time he faced the Rays, but Tampa Bay still wound up winning that game 9-6. I like the RAYS -2.5 (-120) to cover the spread and win by at least 3 runs Thursday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over/Under is 8.5 runs as the high-powered Rays lineup takes on a struggling starter. The total went Over the projected line in each of the last eight games between these teams and it is 68-50-3 in Rays games this season.

Tampa Bay shouldn’t have much trouble putting up runs against Lopez, as they scored 14 runs in the two games he started against them this season. Bet the OVER 8.5 (-135).

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Baltimore Orioles (31-63) and Tampa Bay Rays (56-39) play the finale of a three-game set Wednesday at Tropicana Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Orioles vs. Rays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

LHP Keegan Akin is the projected starting pitcher for the Orioles. He is 0-5 with a 8.19 ERA and 1.80 WHIP with 8.6 K/9 and 3.7 BB over 48 1/3 IP across eight starts and five relief appearances.

Akin has been awful lately, allowing 4 or more earned runs in each of his last six appearances. He has also lost his five decisions over his last seven starts causing his ERA to rise from 3.60 to 8.19 since June 4.

RHP Michael Wacha is the projected starting pitcher for the Rays. He is 2-2 with a 5.14 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 across 61 1/3 IP spanning 11 starts and five relief appearances.

Wacha allowed 4 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks across 4 innings in a no-decision Friday at the Atlanta Braves. He worked just 2 innings in a 28-pitch start against the Orioles June 13 giving up 1 run on 2 hits and a walk in a no-decision.

Orioles at Rays odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:15 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Orioles +165 (bet $100 to win $165) | Rays -200 (bet $200 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Orioles +1.5 (-120) | Rays -1.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 8.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Prediction

Rays 8, Orioles 3

Money line (ML)

The RAYS (-200) are expensive as the favorites, but not totally out of line. It’s a very good bet to take the home side as it will be able to pile up the offense and get the win against the scuffling Akin and the Orioles.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RAYS -1.5 (+100) is a good bet against the Orioles as Akin has been serving up batting practice lately for all intents and purposes. Tampa Bay will score early and often and cover the run line in the series finale. We should see a result similar to the 9-3 beating the Rays put on the O’s Tuesday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over cashed in Tuesday’s lopsided affair and you can expect another rout in Wednesday’s matinee. The only concern here is that the teams just played an evening game, and the bats could be quiet for the road team. However, the home side should enjoy plenty of success against Akin and his 12.21 ERA across his past six appearances.

Bet the OVER 8.5 (-105).

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Baltimore Orioles (31-62) and Tampa Bay Rays (55-39) play the second game of a three-game set at Tropicana Field Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Orioles vs. Rays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

LHP John Means is the projected starting pitcher for the Orioles. He is 4-2 with a 2.28 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 8.7 K/9 and 1.6 BB over 71 IP across 12 starts.

Means allowed 4 earned runs, 6 hits and 1 walk with 6 strikeouts across 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Rays in his previous outing May 19 at Camden Yards.

LHP Shane McClanahan is the projected starting pitcher for the Rays. He is 3-3 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 10.7 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 across 60 IP spanning 13 starts.

McClanahan allowed just 1 run, 4 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts across 4 innings last time out against the Blue Jays July 9 in a no-decision.

Orioles at Rays odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:18 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Orioles +165 (bet $100 to win $165) | Rays -200 (bet $200 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Orioles +1.5 (-125) | Rays -1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: 8 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Prediction

Rays 4, Orioles 2

Money line (ML)

The Rays (-200) will cost you two times your potential return. Monday’s series-opening win by the Orioles served as a cautionary tale of why you never play heavy favorites on the money line.

AVOID, and look to the run line instead.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RAYS -1.5 (+105) are less risky on the run line. Despite Monday’s egg-laying, they’re still 7-4 against the run line across their last 11 games, including four covers as favorites.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 8 (-105) is the play yet again. It cashed in Monday’s series opener, and the Under is now 6-2-1 across the past nine meetings in St. Petersburg.

The Under is 5-1-1 in Baltimore’s last seven games on astroturf, while the Under is 4-0 in Tampa Bay’s last five games as a favorite, and 11-4-1 in its last 16 at home against a left-handed starter. The Under is also a perfect 6-0 across the Rays’ last six divisional games.

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Baltimore Orioles (30-62) and Tampa Bay Rays (55-38) play the opener of a three-game set Monday at Tropicana Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Orioles vs. Rays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Spenser Watkins is the projected starting pitcher for the Orioles. He is 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 6 K and 6 BB over 10 1/3 IP across two starts and one relief appearance.

Watkins hasn’t given up much in the way of runs in his two previous starts, yielding just 1 run to the Toronto Blue Jays over 5 innings in a win July 6, and just 1 run over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision July 11 against the Chicago White Sox last time out. His issue has been allowing walks, with six free passes issued in the last 9 1/3 innings.

LHP Ryan Yarbrough is the projected starting pitcher for the Rays. He is 6-3 with a 4.30 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 across 96 1/3 IP in 13 starts and five relief appearances.

The southpaw has gone 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in a pair of victories over the Toronto Blue Jays so far in July.

He has posted a 1-0 mark with a 3.75 ERA and .234 opponent batting average against through 12 innings while serving up 4 home runs in two starts against the Orioles this season.

Orioles at Rays odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:05 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Orioles +170 (bet $100 to win $170) | Rays -210 (bet $210 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Orioles +1.5 (-115) | Rays -1.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 9 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Prediction

Rays 5, Orioles 3

Money line (ML)

The Rays (-210) will cost you two times your potential return, and that’s just a little more expensive than I care to wager, even against the lowly Orioles. Baltimore proved a few weeks ago in a road sweep in Houston that they can cobble together a few impressive wins.

AVOID, and play the run line instead.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RAYS -1.5 (-105) are a much better value on the run line, especially at home. Not only is Tampa Bay 7-3 across the last 10 starts by Yarbrough, but they’re also 8-2 covering the run line in his last 10 outings, including five times as the favorite with wins of 2 or more runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 9 (-115) is the play in this series opener. Watkins hasn’t been yielding a lot for the O’s, and Yarbrough has been on point lately for the Rays.

Tampa Bay has averaged just 4.8 runs per game across Yarbrough’s past four outings, and the Under is 5-2-1 across the past eight meetings between these sides at “The Trop”.

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Baltimore Orioles (22-40) and Tampa Bay Rays (40-24) play the second of a three-game set at Tropicana Field with a 4:10 p.m. ET first pitch. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Orioles vs. Rays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Jorge Perez is the projected starting pitcher for the Orioles. He is 2-6 with a 5.30 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 8.7 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 over 56 IP through 12 starts.

Perez allowed three earned runs, four hits and three walks across five innings in a victory against the Indians on Sunday. It was his first outing in three tries without a quality start, but the O’s backed him and the bullpen with 18 runs.

LHP Rich Hill is the projected starting pitcher for the Rays. He is 5-2 with a 3.05 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 over 62 IP through 12 starts.

Hill has won each of his past two starts while tossing 10 scoreless innings. He has also won four of his previous five outings. The last time he faced the Orioles in Baltimore, he allowed one run in six innings in a win May 20.

Orioles at Rays odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Orioles +180 (bet $100 to win $180) | Rays -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Orioles +1.5 (-115) | Rays -1.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 7.5 (Over -110 | Under -110)

Prediction

Rays 6, Orioles 2

Money line (ML)

The Rays (-225) will cost you more than two times your potential return against the Orioles (+180). Betting MLB and being successful has a lot to do with pitching matchups, and this one is heavily skewed in favor of the home side.

AVOID, and look to the run line instead.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The RAYS -1.5 (-105) are a much better play on the run line at near even money. Tampa doubled up the Orioles +1.5 (-115), covering the run line in the opener Friday.

The Rays also swept a three-game set at Camden Yards May 18-20, outscoring the O’s 32-14 while covering the run line in each of those outings, too. That includes a 10-1 win behind Hill on May 20.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 7.5 (-110) is the lean here, but it’s only worth a small-unit play. Tampa should be able to roll up enough offense against Lopez, but Baltimore will struggle against the southpaw.
