Oregon Ducks fail to score touchdown for first time since November of 2017

The Ducks failed to score a touchdown against the Bulldogs for the first time in almost five years. Not a great start for Kenny Dillingham’s offense.

The Dan Lanning era is off to a ridiculously rough start after the Oregon Ducks got torched by the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, falling 49-3 in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game.

It is the first time the Ducks failed to score a touchdown in a game since November 4, 2017 against the Washington Huskies.

Oregon’s offense had some decent drives, going 7-15 on third down, 2-3 on fourth down, and totaling over 300 yards in the contest.

However, a pair of costly interceptions from quarterback Bo Nix and a completely disastrous performance from the defense allowed Georgia to march down the field effortlessly basically every single time they had the ball.

The Bulldogs went 9-10 on third down, and quarterback Stetson Bennett completed 25-31 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns before exiting early and giving way to backup Carson Beck, who went 5-6 with a touchdown himself.

While Oregon’s failure to score a touchdown isn’t entirely on Nix and the offense, it is clear they have a lot of work to do on both ends of the field if they want to challenge Utah and USC for a Pac-12 championship this season.

3 keys to victory for No. 11 Oregon Ducks against No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs

The Ducks will have their hands full with the defending champion Bulldogs Saturday. Here are three keys to pulling an upset.

The Oregon Ducks are taking on the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, in what will be a reunion of sorts for new head coach Dan Lanning – Georgia’s former defensive coordinator.

Georgia is the heavy favorite in this game, but Oregon is a new-look squad with not only a new coach at the helm, but a new quarterback, new coordinators, new running backs, and multiple new starters in the secondary, on the defensive line, and in the wide receiver room.

It makes the Ducks a tough team to pin down early in the season, and that is just one of many things this Oregon squad should use to their advantage in this game to pull off a major upset.

Here are three keys to a potential Oregon victory:

Element of Surprise

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix throws out a pass during practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022, in Eugene.

Oregon’s blend of talent, athleticism, potential, experience, and more importantly NEWNESS puts them in a unique position heading into this game.

Pound for pound, no one is arguing Oregon is better than Georgia. But Georgia is a relatively known commodity, with a returning quarterback, returning tight ends, a few returners up front, and a still excellent defense that now-Oregon head coach Dan Lanning helped build.

Meanwhile, Georgia coach Kirby Smart is going to have a hard time figuring out just what the heck, or even who the heck, the Ducks are going to be rolling out there on Saturday.

Using that to their advantage will be key for the Ducks. Trick plays, new plays, different coverages on defense, etc. are all ways for Oregon to keep Georgia guessing throughout the game, which could give them a bit of an edge.

How every Oregon Ducks quarterback performed in Week 1 since the 2000 season

Whether Bo Nix or Ty Thompson, the Ducks will have a new QB1 on Saturday. Here’s how every Oregon QB performed in Week 1 dating back to 2000.

The 2022 college football season is mercifully getting underway, with the Oregon Ducks set to take on the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.

While we don’t know for certain, Bo Nix is the presumed starter under center for Dan Lanning’s squad, and he’ll look to do damage against an elite defense that Lanning himself helped construct and develop during his time with the Bulldogs.

The Ducks have rich history of excellent quarterback play, dating all the way back to the Norm Van Brocklin and Dan Fouts days. Recent successes include Joey Harrington, Kellen Clemens, Dennis Dixon, Marcus Mariota, and Justin Herbert – a tremendously talented group that has helped the Ducks achieve great success over the past two decades.

While a quarterback’s first game of the season isn’t always a good barometer for how the year is going to go, especially since first games are often either against elite opponents (like Georgia) or non-FBS opponents (like Southern Utah or New Mexico in years past). Will that give us some indication on how Nix (or Thompson) will perform on Saturday against Georgia?

Below is a look at every starting quarterback in Week 1 of the past 21 seasons, dating back to Harrington’s squad in 2000.

We take a look at the opponent, the result, and how the quarterback performed in game one:

Dan Lanning unconcerned with underdog label: ‘Nobody in Vegas is going to play in this game’

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning isn’t concerned with the betting odds being against his team in Week 1 against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Opening up the college football season against the defending national champions is never an easy task.

Doing it with a new head coach, new coordinators, a new quarterback, and new starters in the running back room, wide receiver room, and the secondary is especially challenging, even if the talent level at each of those spots is excellent.

So it’s no surprise to see the Oregon Ducks head into the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as betting underdogs. However, new head coach Dan Lanning is entirely unconcerned by the perception of sportsbooks…or really anyone for that matter.

“We don’t really bother ourselves with the opinions of others,” Lanning told reporters on Monday. “Nobody in Vegas is gonna play in this game. Our players are gonna play in the game so we know what everyone thinks of our team and that’s okay by us. Our goal is to go out there and play the best game we can possibly play. But that’s gonna have zero effect on this game. The opinions of others are not going to matter.”

Considering the amount of emotion that goes into a regular college football season opener, and considering the added aspect of playing your former team, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation and coming off a championship, it’s easy to see why Vegas betting lines are about the last thing on Lanning’s mind this week.

Oregon and Georgia are set to kick off their respective seasons at 12:30 PM PT on Saturday.
