Where is Oregon’s place in the national recruiting world under Dan Lanning?

Oregon’s recruiting saw an uptick under Mario Cristobal. Now with Dan Lanning at the helm, can the Ducks hold onto that elite status, or even further it?

The world of recruiting has evolved for the Oregon Ducks over the past decade, and it large part, it’s gone through swings with the numerous coaching changes. While things were soaring under Chip Kelly, they took a dip in the years between the end of his tenure and the start of the Mario Cristobal era. Of course, Cristobal got things back on track, and a pair of top-10 recruiting classes in his past three years has Oregon’s roster stacked with talent.

In all, since 2010, the Ducks have had two top-10 classes, seven top-15 classes, and just two classes ranked lower than 20th in the nation, per 247Sports. While much of Oregon’s success in the recruiting world came from getting star players out of California and in the western half of the nation, things have shifted in the past five years. It started with Cristobal, and has continued under the new regime — the Ducks are now recruiting at a national level.

[lawrence-related id=24768]

Is that something that can be taken to the next level under Dan Lanning and his coaching staff? Early in his tenure, we’ve seen Lanning have some great success on the trail, building up the 2022 class to a No. 16 ranking in the nation despite having very little time to work. It’s not much to go on, but should that give us a lot of confidence going forward?

That’s a question that The Athletic asked as they ramp up their 2023 recruiting coverage. Here’s what they had to say:

When Oregon had to deal with unexpectedly losing Cristobal after he had a ton of success recruiting an elite-level class in the 2021 cycle, what did the Ducks do? They went out and hired a coach who learned how to recruit under Smart at Georgia. The expectation for Oregon is that Dan Lanning is not only going to keep meeting Cristobal’s standard but maybe even exceed it.

The biggest win since Lanning took over was landing five-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. out of Seattle (Wash.) Rainier Beach to close out the Class of 2022. That was important for two reasons — elite offensive tackles are gold in this sport, and it seemed as though Conerly was trending toward USC at the 11th hour.

Oregon’s 2023 class has six commitments, but only one — four-star cornerback Cole Martin of Chandler (Ariz.) Basha — is ranked in the top 100 nationally. In this head-to-head battle between Lanning and Riley, who do you got?

While the 2022 class ended with fireworks — the Conerly commitment, plus 4-star WR Kyler Kasper’s reclassification to 2022 — it’s clear that there are some interesting things brewing on the horizon for 2023 as well. The month of June alone could be a banner time for the Ducks, with a handful of 5-star players — Richard Young, Jayden Wayne, Kadyn Proctor, Samuel M’Pemba, David Hicks — all coming on visits to Eugene in a couple of weeks.

Lanning and his staff are getting talent to town, and they’ve shown in the past that they tend to find success from there. If the question on the national landscape is “where will Oregon stand in the nation’s rankings from year to year?” then I think Duck fans feel pretty confident that they know what the answer will be under the new coaching staff.

Somewhere near the top.

Oregon jumps nearly 10 spots in recruiting rankings after Kodi DeCambra commitment

With the latest commitment from 4-star S Kodi DeCambra, the Oregon Ducks made another big jump up the recruiting rankings.

On Monday afternoon, Oregon Duck fans got to add some football celebration to their ongoing Memorial Day celebrations. 4-star safety Kodi DeCambra announced his commitment to play his college ball in Eugene.

While there’s been a feeling over the past several months that DeCambra was going to end up at Oregon, we now know it’s official. DeCambra is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 16 safety in the 2023 class, and the No. 255 player overall.

So what does that do to Oregon’s recruiting rankings in the nation as a whole?

According to 247Sports team rankings, the Ducks jumped up nearly 10 spots. They went into Monday sitting at No. 25 in the nation with 6 commitments. Now they move into the No. 16 spot, just ahead of Cincinnati and behind Iowa.

Oregon still sits at No. 3 in the Pac-12 recruiting rankings, trailing the USC Trojans (No. 9 in nation) and the Colorado Buffaloes (No. 14 in nation.)

With all of the momentum that the Ducks have on the recruiting trail at the moment, we can expect that number to rise before all is said and done as well. The month of June is expected to be massive for Oregon, as they will host a number of 5-star prospects including RB Richard Young, OT Kadyn Proctor, EDGE Jayden Wayne, and DL David Hicks.

Breaking: 2023 4-star safety Kodi DeCambra commits to Oregon Ducks

Another one for the Ducks. 4-star safety Kodi DeCambra announced his commitment to Oregon, joining the 2023 class.

[jwplayer keaYdjlV]

The positive recruiting commitment for the Oregon Ducks is certainly continuing full-steam ahead, this time with a commitment from 4-star safety Kodi DeCambra.

DeCambra, a Bishop Gorman safety who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 3 player in Nevada, has been a continual presence in Eugene over the past six months, making several visits to the campus.

DeCambra is the No. 16 safety in the 2023 class, and the No. 214 player overall, according to 247Sports.

The addition of DeCambra continues the positive momentum for the Ducks, who have added some talented players like 4-star WR Jurrion Dickey, 4-star WR Ashton Cozart, and 4-star RB Dante Dowdell in the past several weeks. The Ducks also had a booming spring, with 4-star WR Kyler Kasper reclassifying to the 2022 class after his commitment, as well as 5-star OT Josh Conerly’s commitment to Oregon.

5-star DE Matayo Uiagalelei joins massive June recruiting weekend in Oregon

Add another 5-star recruit who will be on campus in Eugene this June.

The weekend of June 24 is setting up to be the biggest we’ve seen at Oregon when it comes to recruits coming to town.

We knew some of the top five-star prospects in the nation — running back Richard Young, offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, defensive end Jayden Wayne, defensive lineman David Hicks and athlete Samuel M’Pemba — were coming to Eugene along with many more four-stars on the guest list. On Sunday night, we learned another five-star player is being added to the list, DE Matayo Uiagalelei.

Uiagalelei is a familiar name for Oregon fans. He has been on multiple visits to Eugene over the past year. Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 DE and No. 5 player in the 2023 class, a player of Matayo’s caliber committing would be massive for the Ducks, and they seem to be in a great position.

Uiagalelei will take three of his official visits this spring — to Oregon, USC, and Ohio State — and will take an visit to Alabama during the season.

Ducks listed as overwhelming favorite to land 4-star S Kodi DeCambra, who commits on Monday

Kodi DeCambra will announce his commitment on Monday at noon. The Ducks should feel good about their chances.

We will find out the final destination for 4-star safety Kodi DeCambra on Memorial Day, who is set to announce his commitment at long last on Monday at noon.

There’s a good sense that we know where he is going to end up, though…

DeCambra, who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 3 player in the state of Nevada, as well as the No. 24 safety and No. 255 player in the 2023 class, has long been predicted to choose the Oregon Ducks. If you look at the ‘Crystal Ball’ predictions on 247Sports, there are 5 predictions, all for the Ducks.

You can also look at On3’s recruiting prediction machine, where Oregon is given an overwhelming chance to land the blue-chip defensive back.

It may be a foregone conclusion, but we will see the final decision on Monday afternoon. It looks like it might be shaping up for another great day for the Ducks.

Ducks take big jump up ESPN’s 2023 recruiting rankings after Ashton Cozart addition

The Ducks jumped nearly 10 spots in ESPN’s recruiting rankings, and they show no signs of slowing down.

Depending on which recruiting site you’re looking at, the rankings are going to appear a little bit different. Regardless of your preference, though, it’s clear that the Oregon Ducks are heading in the right direction.

After getting a bit of a slow start to the 2023 cycle — which was understandable due to the new coaching staff getting settled and creating in-roads with top talent — the Ducks are now carrying a lot of momentum into the summer months.

[lawrence-related id=24601]

According to ESPN’s recently updated national recruiting rankings, Oregon made a big jump up the polls. About a month ago, the Ducks ranked No. 22 on the list. Now, after a couple of new offensive additions, Oregon is all the way up to No. 13.

New head coach Dan Lanning led Georgia’s championship defense last year but now focuses on trying to build a similar unit with the Ducks. ESPN 300 CB Martin is a good place to start, as he is a player with good feet and upside. Despite his strong defensive background, Lanning’s first full class at Oregon is defined by promising offensive talent. The Ducks landed big targets for their passing attack in Cozart, who is long, fast and posted a laser-timed 4.45 40 at the Dallas Under Armour camp, and Jurrion Dickey, who had an MVP performance at the UC Report Elite Camp in Oakland this spring. Along with Kyler Kasper, all of them check in at 6-foot-2 or taller and can win contested matchups.

Of course, ESPN is still listing 4-star WR Kyler Kasper as a member of the 2023 class, when in reality he reclassified to 2022 and will join the Ducks this fall, so this top-15 ranking may be slightly generous for Oregon.

[lawrence-related id=24558]

Regardless, it’s impossible to deny the fact that the Ducks are picking up steam in the recruiting world and set for a big summer stretch. Already they have some massive visits set for the month of June, with guys like 5-star Richard Young, 5-star Jayden Wayne, 5-star Kadyn Proctor, and 5-star David Hicks all scheduled to be in Eugene over the next 30 days.

There’s no telling when more commitments might come, but the next couple of months look like they could bring more success for the Ducks.

5-star EDGE Jayden Wayne narrows list down to 6 schools

Jayden Wayne keeps Oregon in his top-6 ahead of his OV to Eugene next month.

The Oregon Ducks should feel good about where they stand when it comes to the recruitment of 5-star defensive end Jayden Wayne, a 6-foot-5 monster from Tacoma, Washington.

Wayne has visited Eugene a number of times over the past year or so, and he is currently predicted to land with the Ducks according to On3 Recruiting.

So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when Wayne included Oregon in his top-6 released on Friday morning, alongside five other blue-blood schools like Alabama, Georgia, Miami, LSU, and Michigan State.

Wayne, who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 3 EDGE in the 2023 class, and the No. 28 player overall, has one of his five official visits scheduled to Eugene on June 24th, where there will be some of the best recruits in the nation at his side. We will see how his recruitment goes after that visit, but Duck fans should feel pretty confident about this one.

Where Oregon Ducks go at RB after two prominent targets commit to UCLA, Notre Dame

Both Roderick Robinson and Jayden Limar passed on the Ducks Thursday. Where will Oregon focus now when it comes to recruiting RBs?

Thursday was expected to be an important day for the Oregon Ducks when it came to recruiting the running back position.

Four-star backs Roderick Robinson II and Jaydin Limar planned to announce their commitments. Both were targets for Oregon, and both had the Ducks among their final options.

Both chose to play college ball elsewhere.

Robinson announced on Thursday morning he planned to commit to the UCLA Bruins. Limar committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday afternoon. Neither was predicted to land with the Ducks, so the outcome wasn’t a major surprise. However, with the way Oregon has recruited at the RB position over the past few months, it would not have been a shock to see either player choose to put on the green and yellow, either.

Both players are off the board now, though, which leaves the Ducks to reset and get back out on the recruiting trail. Fortunately they already have four-star Dante Dowdell committed to the 2023 class, stealing him late in the game from Ole Miss and Tennessee, but it wouldn’t at all be surprising to see them add more.

Which running backs might they be after in the 2023 class, though? Here are a few to keep an eye on:

Oregon Ducks land huge official visit from 5-star RB Richard Young

Not only will 5-star RB Richard Young take an OV to Eugene, but the Ducks will be his last visit in June. That’s potentially very beneficial.

The Oregon Ducks got some big news in the recruiting world on Wednesday morning, with 5-star RB Richard Young announcing that he would be taking one of his five official visits to Eugene at the start of this summer.

Young, who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 2 RB in the 2023 class and No. 19 player overall in the nation, has been in Eugene already this year for a visit, and obviously liked it enough to put the state of Oregon back in his schedule for his jam-packed summer of visits.

Young also released a top-7 recently, with the Ducks in the mix along with some other traditional powers like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.

Young will be back in Eugene from June 24-26, which will be his last official visit of the summer. We will see how quickly he makes a decision after that visit, but with the Ducks getting the last crack at him, it certainly could be beneficial.

Where Oregon stands in 2023 rankings after flip from 4-star WR Ashton Cozart

Oregon was 30th in the nation before flipping Ashton Cozart from Oklahoma. Where do they rank now after adding the 4-star WR?

The Oregon Ducks picked up a major commitment on Sunday afternoon, with 4-star WR and former Oklahoma commit Ashton Cozart, who flipped from the Sooners to the Ducks after a visit to Eugene this weekend.

Cozart is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 17 WR in the 2023 class, and No. 140 player overall.

While the Ducks got off to a bit of a slow start when it comes to the 2023 recruiting cycle, they have certainly picked up steam over the past month, and now have 5 players in the class, with Cozart joining 4-star WR Jurrion Dickey, 4-star RB Dante Dowdell, 4-star CB Cole Martin, and 3-star DL Tevita Pome’e.

With the addition of Cozart, Oregon climbed up a number of spots in the 247Sports national recruiting rankings. They were at No. 30 on the list going into the weekend and now sit at No. 21 overall after flipping the former Sooner.

We will see over the next couple of months how much talent Oregon can continue to add to the class, but they are certainly on a roll right now and heading in the right direction.
