Adriano Moraes hoping ONE Championship doesn’t have to resort to Plan B for his title fight

Adriano Moraes’ next bout arguably is the biggest of his career, but he’s left just hoping it still happens.

[autotag]Adriano Moraes[/autotag]’ next bout arguably is the biggest of his career, but he’s left just hoping it still happens.

ONE Championship flyweight titleholder Moraes (18-3) is set to meet former UFC flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson (30-3-1) at the end of May at ONE Championship’s “Infinity 1” event in Manila in the Philippines. But the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic might have something to say about that time table.

“We hope this coronavirus situation improves so we can actually travel there,” Moraes recently told MMA Junkie. “It’s not for sure that airports will be open at that time. I believe this will all get better so the event can go forward.

“My understanding right now is that the card will be on May 29, in Manila – assuming things improve. I’m not sure if ONE has a Plan B, or another location in mind like a closed studio. It would be a dream come true if they could do it here in the United States. I’ll just keep training, waiting for the time to come, so we can have the fight in the best way possible.”

Moraes, currently training in Florida, has had to deal with closed gyms like most fighters. He said he already had been training when things started into lockdown mode to help combat the virus. Now he’s at the point he does what he can to stay in shape.

“To keep doing it, I’ve been exercising outdoors,” he said. “I wake up early so I can go on a long run and practice some shadowboxing in the grassy area near my building. There’s a pool here, too. It’s not too big, but I’m also swimming so I can work my cardio. I use some of the trees in the area to do some drills. There are ways to stay active while we wait for this coronavirus situation to improve. I’m taking care of myself. I’m helping out by doing social distancing. We’re all doing our part until things improve, and we can get back to work. I’m looking forward to a great fight.”

Johnson moved to ONE Championship after years in the UFC in late 2018 and worked his way through a flyweight tournament to get a shot at the belt. Moraes avenged a loss to Geje Eustaquio in January 2019 with a unanimous decision to win back the bantamweight title. That victory came seven months after he lost a split call to Eustaquio to have a four-fight winning streak halted.

Moraes has been thinking about Johnson for long enough that he seems to understand a lot of his ins and outs. But at the same time, he’ll have gone nearly 18 months without fighting.

“My focus is to be at an above-average physical condition,” he said. “I want my standup to be very intense, too. Sometimes, I manage to book time with a partner, so we can spar or hit some pads at a local field. I’ll do what I always do, which is to give my best inside the ONE circle. I’m looking to get a knockout or submission win. It’s going to be a very active fight. I’m much improved since my last fight last year. I’m very happy with this opportunity. I believe everything is going to work out for the best.

“Once Demetrious Johnson joined the promotion, I asked to fight him. But I didn’t get that fight. Instead, I was told he’d participate in the flyweight grand prix. I was told I’d defend against the eventual grand prix winner (Johnson). So, I had to wait. There was nothing I could do. But the wait will be worth it. It’s going to be a great fight.”

Video: Brandon Vera’s top 3 knockouts in ONE Championship

Ahead of his return to action at ONE Infinity 1, check out a hat trick of first-round KOs from heavyweight champion Brandon Vera.

[autotag]Brandon Vera[/autotag]’s ONE Championship record at heavyweight is untouchable, and he’ll look to extend that red-hot form when he returns to action later this summer.

ONE heavyweight champion Vera (16-8) is set to make his return to action against Arjan Bhullar at ONE Infinity 1 in Manila, Philippines, on May 29, where he hopes to continue his devastating run in the Asian promotion’s heaviest division.

Since signing for ONE Championship in 2014, Vera has fought four times as a heavyweight and claimed all four wins by first-round knockout. He made a splash in his debut with a soccer-kick KO of Igor Subora, then captured the heavyweight title in his second appearance with a stunning head-kick KO against Paul Cheng. Then, in his two most recent heavyweight outings, “The Truth” defended his title with first-round knockouts of Hideki Sekine and Mauro Cerilli.

Now, after unsuccessfully attempting to become a two-division champion against reigning middleweight and light heavyweight champ Aung La N Sang, Vera is returning to his natural weight class to take on Canada’s Bhullar (10-1), who picked up a unanimous decision against Cerilli in his promotional debut in October 2019.

ONE Championship has released a highlight reel video showing Vera’s best three KOs so far. Check out his handiwork – and footwork – above to see Vera starch Subora, Cheng and Cerilli in spectacular fashion.

ONE Championship moves all April, May events behind closed doors during coronavirus crisis

ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong has announced his promotion will host all their events behind closed doors throughout April and May.

Asian promotion ONE Championship has taken a major step in their approach to dealing with the ongoing coronavirus outbreak by announcing they are holding all of their upcoming shows in April and May behind closed doors.

The Singapore-based organization, which recently hosted its “ONE Championship 109: King of the Jungle” event behind closed doors at Singapore Indoor Stadium, also postponed “ONE Championship 110: Heart of Heroes” in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as a result of the ongoing crisis.

Now ONE has taken things a stage further, by confirming that the organization is transitioning all of their upcoming events into behind-closed-door events until the end of May, and confirming an adjusted event schedule for the period.

In a Facebook post, ONE CEO and chairman Chatri Sityodtong officially announced the news:

BREAKING NEWS: My team and I have decided to turn all events for ONE Championship into closed-door, audience-free events effective immediately. Bar none, the safety of our fans, athletes, staff, partners, and the public is the highest priority for ONE Championship. All scheduled ONE events with live audiences will now be suspended until at least May 29, 2020 due to the extraordinary COVID-19 global situation.

For the millions of fans at home around the world, the show will go on from the comfort and safety of your living room. Our global broadcast shows behind closed doors will commence in Singapore with an initial schedule of April 17, April 24, May 1, and May 8 respectively. Bout cards will be announced shortly for these broadcast-only shows, and additional dates will be added in the near future. Also, ONE Infinity Series, the world apex of martial arts events, is now slated to kick off on May 29, 2020 in Manila, Philippines with ONE Infinity 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The schedule changes mean the new ONE Infinity series events will kick off later in the month, with ONE Infinity 1 taking place on May 29 in Manila, Philippines.

The amended ONE Championship schedule for April and May includes:

  • April 17 – “ONE Championship 111: Kings & Queens” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Demetrious Johnson to challenge for ONE flyweight title at ONE Infinity 1

Demetrious Johnson will challenge for the flyweight title at ONE Infinity 1 in Jakarta on Friday, Apr. 10.

[autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag] will look to add a second ONE Championship belt to his collection at ONE Infinity 1.

The record-breaking former UFC flyweight champion captured the ONE flyweight grand prix title in 2019, and along with the colossal championship belt he received for his efforts, he was also handed a shot at reigning ONE flyweight champion, [autotag]Adriano Moraes[/autotag].

That matchup will form the main event of ONE Infinity 1, which takes place at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday, Apr. 10. The event will be streamed live on B/R Live, with prelims on MMA Junkie.

Johnson (30-3-1) made his high-profile switch from the UFC to ONE in a much-publicized so-called “trade” that saw Ben Askren head in the opposite direction, and has looked as sharp as ever inside the ONE Championship circle.

“Mighty Mouse” kicked off his tenure with his new promotion with a second-round submission of Yuya Wakamatsu in the quarterfinals of the grand prix tournament at “ONE Championship 92: A New Era” in March 2019, then followed up with a dominant unanimous decision win over Tatsumitsu Wada at “ONE Championship 99: Dawn of Heroes” four months later. He captured the grand prix title in the final with another unanimous decision, this time against Filipino fan-favorite Danny Kingad to put himself in line for a shot at three-time champion Moraes (18-3).

The co-main event in Jakarta sees the return of two-division ONE champion [autotag]Aung La N Sang[/autotag]. “The Burmese Python” holds the middleweight and light heavyweight titles, as well as a knockout win over current heavyweight champion Brandon Vera. Now N Sang (26-10) returns to action as he puts his middleweight belt on the line against the man he defeated to win it back in 2017, Russia’s [autotag]Vitaly Bigdash[/autotag].

Then-champion Bigdash (10-2) defeated N Sang in their first meeting at “ONE Championship 51: Quest for Power” in January 2017 after the Myanmar athlete stepped in on short notice to challenge for the title. But, despite losing a unanimous decision, N Sang had done enough to warrant a rematch with a full camp, and he made his second chance count as he turned the tables on Bigdash to claim a unanimous decision of his own after a breathless five rounds at “ONE Championship 56: Light of a Nation” in Yangon, Myanmar.

Injury and an untimely defeat to Leandro Ataides kept Bigdash from his chance to face N Sang again in a trilogy fight, but that matchup will now finally take place in Jakarta, with the ONE middleweight strap on the line once again.

A third title will also be on the line in Jakarta, as ONE light heavyweight kickboxing champion Roman Kryklia puts his title on the line for the first time against Andrei Stoica.

ONE Infinity 1 confirmed fights:

  • Champ Adriano Moraes vs. Demetrious Johnson – for flyweight title
  • Champ Aung La N Sang vs. Vitaly Bigdash – for middleweight title
  • Champ Roman Kryklia vs. Andrei Stoica – for light heavyweight kickboxing title
