Why Demetrious Johnson is considering retirement despite still feeling in his prime

Demetrious Johnson explains why he’s considering walking away from MMA.

[autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag] arguably is ONE Championship’s biggest name, holds a title, and thinks he’s still in his physical prime.

But the living legend is considering walking away from the sport. Johnson (25-4-1), ONE’s flyweight champion and one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, is contemplating retirement.

The 36-year-old retained his belt this past Friday when he beat Adriano Moraes (20-5) in their trilogy bout in the ONE Fight Night 10 main event in Colorado. That night, “Mighty Mouse” let the crowd know it might’ve been the last of him.

“It’s based on business. As a competitor, I want to keep on fighting until the wheels fall off. But that competitive nature can get you in trouble,” Johnson told MMA Junkie. “You can stay too long and suffer some real bad damage. So I just don’t know. I’m just here thinking. I haven’t thought about it yet.”

Johnson has yet to make a decision and is not in a hurry to make one, either. He said he recently spoke to Georges St-Pierre and Urijah Faber to seek advice on retirement.

Johnson said there are many factors that are contributing to his doubts, but not feeling his best or game to fight the elite at ONE championship is not one of them.

“Oh, yeah, (I’m still in my prime),” Johnson said. “I think prime wise, it’s based on the mindset, your mental (game), your fight IQ and your body. So far, my body feels fine.”

At this point in his life, fighting consumes plenty of time, and Johnson isn’t sure if it’s worth it. That’s a big reason why his MMA career may come to an end.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Johnson said. “How much more does an athlete have to do? Do I want to start focusing on other things? Because when you get ready for these fights, I give myself eight to 12 weeks.

“This training camp was really long, and people don’t realize that. I was in Arizona in February training with Henry Cejudo and his team – kind of like pre-camp. I like to call it the pre-camp to camp. I was out there, I came back home, and then I did the end of February pretty much all the way to the end of April (in Washington), and then I went to Colorado and did (the fight). So that’s a huge chunk that I’m taking away from other activities with my family or business or other things I can do outside of fighting. It’s a lot.

“With that being said, if I want to focus on doing something else and be successful, I need to be able to use that same energy that I use in my camps in order to be successful in other ventures in my life.”

Money is a factor, as welll. After all, it’s prize fighting. Johnson said higher pay would help keep him around.

But even then, it might not cut it.

“Even then, I still have to decide,” Johnson said. “Money talks, but then after that I have to sit down and say, ‘Well, do I want to do another training camp?’ How does my coach feel? ‘Do you want to do another training camp?’ It’s not just up to me. For me to be successful, it takes a village.”

Video: What’s next for Demetrious Johnson after ONE Fight Night 10?

A consensus all-time great, Demetrious Johnson has accomplished a lot. Are there still opportunities out there worth his while?

ONE Championship made its long-awaited U.S. debut Friday in Broomfield, Colo. with ONE Fight Night 10.

Atop the card was former UFC flyweight champion and consensus all-time great [autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag] (25-4-1) as he earned a unanimous decision nod in a rubber match and defended his title against Adriano Moraes (20-5).

Fight fans, however, exited the performance with as much uncertainty about Johnson’s future as when they entered. After cryptic allusions to Friday’s event being his final fight, Johnson was noncommittal during his in-cage interview.

Johnson asked the crowd for their opinions and was met with cheers, before he said he’ll have to talk to his wife before he decides what’s next. At a post-fight news conference, Johnson said he plans to also consult legends Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

For Johnson, what should be next? Should he retire a legend who has accomplished so much? Or is there still something out there for him to prove or benefit from?

ONE Fight Night 10 winner Sage Northcutt wants ‘super exciting’ fight with Shinya Aoki rebooked

Sage Northcutt wants to test his grappling against Shinya Aoki’s after ONE Fight Night 10.

[autotag]Sage Northcutt[/autotag] wants to test his grappling against [autotag]Shinya Aoki[/autotag]’s after ONE Fight Night 10.

Northcutt (12-3) was booked to face Aoki (47-11-1) in April 2021, but lingering COVID-19 effects forced him out of the bout. He returned from a four-year layoff this past Friday at 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo., and needed just 39 seconds to submit Ahmed Mujtaba (10-3) by heel hook.

As for what’s next, 27-year-old Northcutt said he wants to revisit the Aoki fight, and ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong is on board.

“I did have one set up with Shinya Aoki, and I think that would be a super exciting one,” Northcutt said at the ONE Fight Night 10 post-fight press conference. “Looking through my finishes now, you can see my grappling has improved a lot, and I got to show some grappling. He’s a great grappler. I think that would be a really exciting match.”

Northcutt, who trains out of Team Alpha Male, is not short of strong grapplers in his gym and was glad to show off that part of his game in the fight.

“It was definitely pretty fast,” Northcutt said. “I’ve been working my grappling a lot. So, for the last few years, I’ve been really honing in on it and working on it a ton. I’m really excited that I got to win out there and get a submission, and got to show some of that grappling.”

Not only did Northcutt return from a long layoff, it was one in which he had to recover from a brutal injury suffered in a knockout loss to Cosmo Alexandre in May 2019. Northcutt underwent a nine-hour surgery to repair eight facial fractures and used the time off to work on his game.

“I think one of the big things was the mindset,” Northcutt said of his win. “Of course, I’ve been training to stay sharp but when I go out there, I’m looking for a finish. I’ve just been training with a great team, great coaches. Really been working all around to be very well rounded and fix the holes in my game. Just been really staying in the gym, staying sharp.”

Demetrious Johnson plans to seek retirement advice from Georges St-Pierre, Khabib Nurmagomedov

Demetrious Johnson will reach out to multiple UFC legends when making his decision about retirement.

[autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag] will reach out to multiple UFC legends when making his decision about retirement.

Johnson (25-4-1) retained his flyweight title against Adriano Moraes this past Friday in their trilogy rubber match which headlined ONE Fight Night 10 at 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo., right outside Denver.

After the fight, Johnson asked the crowd if they wanted to see him fight again, and received a loud cheer in response. The 36-year-old said he’d have to speak to his wife first before making the decision, and also plans on consulting the likes of [autotag]Georges St-Pierre[/autotag] and [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] on what went behind their decision to walk away.

“Taking to my peers, talking to Urijah Faber, I’m going to reach out to (Georges St-Pierre), I’m going to reach out to Khabib Nurmagomedov,” Johnson said at the ONE Fight Night 10 post-fight press conference. “I’m going to talk to these guys. I’m like, ‘Why did you guys stop?’

“Those guys could have kept on fighting, and there comes a point in time – I’m 36-years-old, and do I just keep on doing this and giving other athletes the opportunity to beat me and add to their legacy? There’s a lot of stuff I’ve got muster up.”

[lawrence-related id=2640381,2640292,2600210]

Johnson, who defended his UFC flyweight title a record 11 consecutive times, explains that his decision to continue fighting will purely stem from how he’s feeling.

“The reason why I have these feelings, week four and week five was probably the hardest time in all my training camp,” Johnson said. “Like, back in the day when I would fight my world title fights, I remember when I was getting ready to fight Wilson Reis, I would have nightmares that Wilson Reis would get my back. I didn’t have nightmares when I was getting ready to fight Adriano. I was having nightmares about what am I do after I’m done fighting.

“And so I like to listen to my feelings and try to understand like, ‘OK, why am I having nightmares about what am I gonna do after fighting when I have an opponent to train for?’ So that’s where all these feelings harbor from. And I was like, ‘This might be my last fight,’ and just take a step back as an athlete, and look at what am I gonna do after fighting. Because I can keep on fighting. I mean, that’s true, but it takes a lot of energy away from other projects that can take care of me after I’m done fighting. So that’s where that comes from.”

ONE Fight Night 10 results: Demetrious Johnson gets technical to win Adriano Moraes trilogy rubber match

Demetrious Johnson broke the tie and defeated Adriano Moraes in a trilogy at ONE Fight Night 10.

[autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag] reigns supreme.

On Friday at ONE Fight Night 10, Johnson (25-4-1) broke the tie when he defeated [autotag]Adriano Moraes[/autotag] (20-5) by unanimous decision in a trilogy rubber match. The bouts served as the main event for the card, which took place at 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo., right outside Denver.

The first two meetings between Johnson and Moraes ended inside the distance, but Friday’s rubber match needed all 25 minutes for a victor to be named. The contest was largely technical with a lot of striking at distance and battling for position in the clinch, where Johnson found much of his success.

Johnson, 36, swept the judges’ scorecards and afterward answered the “elephant in the room” question during his in-cage interview.

Will Johnson retire? That question remains to be answered.

Johnson asked the crowd if they wanted to see him fight again. After a booming, positive response, Johnson said he’d have to talk with his wife first.

If this is the end for Johnson, he goes down a consensus all-time fighter. He was the inaugural UFC flyweight champion and defended his title 11 times during his title reign.

After he was dethroned with a close split decision defeat against Henry Cejudo, Johnson was traded to ONE Championship for Ben Askren in a historic and unprecedented exchange. In ONE, Johnson won the title, which he defended Friday against Moraes.

Moraes, 34, has now lost back-to-back fights with the defeat at ONE Fight Night 10. He finished Johnson in the first meeting between the two fighters when he drilled “Mighty Mouse” with a powerful knee.
