A Nebraska men’s basketball player will be participating in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament next week.

A Nebraska men’s basketball player will participate in the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament next week. Forward Rienk Mast will try and help the Netherlands advance in the tournament, which is taking place in Istanbul, Turkey.

Mast is making his second appearance for the senior National Team and his first appearance since 2019. During the 2019 Basketball World Cup, he averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in three contests.

The Netherlands will play Sweeden, Belgium, and Croatia during pool play. Should the Netherlands advance from pool play and win the tournament, they would qualify for one of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments next summer.

Mast will spend his first year at Nebraska after having previously played at Bradley University. Last year, he was a member of the All-Missouri Valley Conference first-team, averaging 13.8 points per game and 8.0 rebounds.

With the 2020 Olympics just two weeks away, Team USA and Celtics star Jayson Tatum are preparing to try and win a fourth consecutive Gold Medal in men’s basketball.

The Americans are set to take on three group stage opponents in Japan and hope to advance all the way to August 6th’s Gold Medal game. Before getting underway in late July, the squad will play a set of exhibition games in Las Vegas. The team is in Las Vegas from July 6-18 for training camp and those practice contests.

2021 Olympics in Tokyo likely to be canceled due to the coronavirus

A big obstacle in the NBA’s way is now gone, according to a new report from the Times of London that the Olympics won’t happen.

One of the biggest potential obstacles in the NBA’s way when they were planning how to conduct the current season is no longer going to be in the league’s way as they are trying to finish a 72-game season amid the coronavirus pandemic. But it’s also a blow to many athletes globally who have been training for this moment their whole lives.

The Tokyo Olympics, which were moved from 2020 to 2021, are unlikely to happen as the Japanese government has internally lost faith that they will be able to hold the game due to the coronavirus, according to The Times of London. The NBA had been hoping to finish their season before the Olympics, which several players, including LeBron James, said they would be open to participating in.

With the Olympics looking like it’s not going to happen, that could potentially give the NBA more latitude to make the season longer and get an entire regular season in while still maintaining the health and safety protocols.

While this is of course a blow to athletes across the nation who were hoping to compete in the Olympics, including several NBA players, it opens up more possibilities for the NBA schedule and also presumably gives players who would have to play in the Olympics more time to recover after the season.

Warriors’ Mike Brown to coach Nigerian Olympics men’s basketball team

Golden State Warriors assitant coach Mike Brown will be the coach of the Nigeria men’s basketball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown will be the coach of the Nigeria men’s basketball Olympic team, according to Marc J. Spears of the Undefeated.

Brown will lead the D’Tigers to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer.

Nigeria men’s basketball qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 2012. The team hasn’t missed the cut since and is set to participate for the third time in a row.

In London 2012, the D’Tigers finished 10th. In Rio 2016, they came in 11th.

Brown has worked with seven different NBA teams since 1997 in either an assistant or head coach capacity, serving on staffs for 19 of those 23 seasons.

He was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-10 and the 2013-14 season, and was the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers from 2011-2013. Brown’s head coaching record is 347-216 (.616).

Brown also has Team USA experience. He was an assistant coach for the U.S. Pan American Men’s Basketball Team in 2015.

“I’m honored and humbled that Musa Kida and the Nigerian Basketball Federation have given me this opportunity,” Brown said to the Undefeated.

“The Nigerian Basketball Federation has been very professional and organized throughout the vetting process. They want to continue to build a world-class team and organization on and off the court. I’m excited to have learned that the Federation’s vision is to provide the team with the necessary resources to compete at the highest level. Their commitment will enable the players and coaches to focus our energy on competing at the highest possible level every time we step on the basketball court. We want to make all of Nigeria proud.”

Nigeria’s 2019 World Cup team included four players either on NBA teams or in G League associates: Al-Farouq Aminu, Chimezie Metu, Josh Okogie and Gabe Vincent, according to the Undefeated.

It also rostered former NBA players Diogu, Ekpe Udoh and Ben Uzoh.
